Chapter 58 - Chapter 58 — Seen, Not Interrupted

Evening, Meiji 39 (1906)

Kai POV → Girls POV

---

The door slid open a finger's width.

That was all.

More than enough.

Mrs. Kocho and Mrs. Kanroji stood shoulder to shoulder in the hallway, framed by lantern light, watching the scene unfold in complete silence.

Three girls.

One very trapped boy.

Zero shame.

Mrs. Kanroji pressed a hand over her mouth to stop herself from laughing.

"…Look at them," she whispered.

Mrs. Kocho's eyes softened. "They look safe."

They watched Kai—still, careful, hands moving gently as if the world would break if he rushed it. Mitsuri sprawled comfortably. Kanae composed even in sleep. Shinobu pretending she wasn't holding his sleeve like an anchor.

Mrs. Kocho nodded once. "We'll tease them later."

Mrs. Kanroji grinned. "Oh, absolutely."

The door slid shut again.

Unseen.

🌙 Waking, One by One

The room darkened into evening.

Kai shifted slightly—just enough to breathe easier.

That was his mistake.

Mitsuri stirred first.

"Mmm…?" She blinked, then smiled immediately. "Oh! I'm still here!"

"Yes," Kai said calmly. "You are."

Kanae woke next, eyes opening slowly. She registered the position, the warmth, the fact that she hadn't moved—

—and deliberately didn't move.

"…This is nice," she murmured.

Shinobu opened one eye.

Assessed the situation.

Closed it again.

"Nope," she said. "Still comfortable."

Kai sighed. "You're all awake."

"Correct," Shinobu replied.

"And none of you are moving."

"Also correct," Kanae agreed pleasantly.

Mitsuri hugged his leg tighter. "You didn't say we had to."

---

Kai's Ultimate Move

Kai looked at the ceiling.

Then at them.

Then—he gave up.

Or so they thought.

He leaned down.

Soft. Gentle. Unhurried.

A light kiss to Mitsuri's cheek.

She froze.

Pink exploded across her face.

"…E-EH?!"

Before she could recover—

A brief kiss to Kanae's cheek.

Kanae's eyes widened, then softened into a stunned smile.

"…Oh."

Finally—

He leaned toward Shinobu.

She opened her eyes just in time.

"…Don't y—"

Too late.

A quick, chaste kiss to her cheek.

Shinobu short-circuited.

Her entire face turned red.

"…I—I was NOT prepared for that," she snapped, flustered beyond belief.

Kai straightened, cheeks warm but smiling.

"There," he said. "Wake-up call."

Girls POV — Absolute Disaster

Mitsuri:

Heart racing. Face burning. Happiness threatening to spill everywhere.

"I'm still not moving," she declared, voice wobbly but determined.

Kanae:

Smiling like the world was very kind today.

"…I think I deserve a few more minutes," she said gently.

Shinobu:

Embarrassed. Furious. Delighted.

"…You think that worked?" she muttered—while tightening her grip on his sleeve.

None of them moved.

Not an inch.

---

Kai — Surrender

Kai looked down at them.

Three faces—flushed, stubborn, amused, utterly content.

He laughed softly.

A real laugh.

"…Alright," he said, voice warm. "I surrender."

He relaxed back, hands returning to gentle, familiar motions.

His smile—fond. Caring. Unmistakably affectionate.

Three spoiled cats purred back into comfort.

Outside the room—

Two mothers exchanged knowing looks.

And smiled.
