Chapter 56 - Chapter 56: Echoes in the Hall

The sun had dipped behind the western ridges by the time Damien, Rosalynn, and Sera reached the outer gates of Eldergrove. The city walls glowed faintly in the last amber light, crimson-and-gold banners snapping in the evening breeze. Sera walked between them now, steps steadier with every block, her auburn hair still tangled from the forest, leather vest laced hastily, bow slung across her back. She carried herself with quiet determination, the planted memory sitting firm and unquestioned in her mind.

Damien kept one hand resting lightly at the small of Rosalynn's back, the other near his sword hilt out of long habit. Rosalynn pressed close to his side, silver hair catching the dying sun like molten moonlight, emerald eyes scanning every passerby with the fierce protectiveness that never quite slept.

"My son," she murmured, voice low enough for only him to hear. "Look how the city already feels your presence. They sense strength and safety."

Damien smiled down at her, thumb tracing a gentle circle against her spine.

"Because Mother walks beside me," he answered tenderly. "Your faith makes every shadow retreat. Every rumor bends to truth when you are near."

Sera glanced at them, a faint flush rising to her cheeks.

"I… I owe you both everything," she said quietly. "Garran… what he tried… if you hadn't been there…"

Rosalynn reached across Damien to squeeze Sera's forearm with gentle reassurance.

"You are safe now," she said softly. "My son made certain of it. The guild will hear the truth from your lips. And the rest… will fade like morning mist."

They passed through the gates without challenge. The streets had begun to quiet, merchants closing stalls, lanterns flickering to life in windows. Yet a subtle current ran through the crowds: heads turning, whispers trailing in their wake like smoke.

By the time they reached the Adventurers' Guild Hall, night had fully settled. The tall building stood ablaze with torchlight, windows spilling warm gold onto the cobblestones. Voices spilled from the open doors: laughter, argument, the clink of mugs. But as Damien pushed inside, the noise faltered.

Heads turned.

Conversations stuttered.

Elara looked up from her counter first. Her hazel eyes widened, flicking from Damien to Rosalynn, then to Sera walking between them. She rose so quickly her stool scraped back.

"Sera?" she breathed. "You're… you're alive. We heard—"

Sera stepped forward, chin lifting.

"I'm alive because of him," she said clearly, voice carrying across the suddenly hushed hall. "Damien saved me. Garran… Garran tried to force himself on me in Verdant Deep. He and Kael and Torv… they turned on me when I refused. They would have killed me to keep it quiet."

A ripple of shock moved through the room.

Elara's hand flew to her mouth.

"Garran?" she whispered, voice cracking. "But he… he was…"

Sera nodded, eyes steady.

"He was jealous. Angry about ranks. About… other things. But Damien and Rosalynn found us. He ended the threat. Cleanly and mercifully, where he could. I owe him my life."

The hall erupted into murmurs.

Damien stood quietly beside Rosalynn, expression calm, hand never leaving her back. Rosalynn lifted her chin, emerald eyes sweeping the room with quiet pride, as though daring anyone to question her son's actions.

A grizzled evaluator, Master Thorne, the same man who had handled their house purchase pushed forward from the back.

"Is this true, girl?" he asked gruffly.

Sera met his gaze without flinching.

"Every word," she answered. "I swear it on my badge."

Thorne studied Damien for a long moment.

"You've been in the guild barely weeks," he said slowly. "Yet you've brought down wolves, completed high-rank herbs, and now this. Garran was no small name. He had friends in high seats."

Damien inclined his head respectfully.

"I did only what was necessary," he said evenly. "To protect the innocent and to protect those who travel these roads."

Rosalynn stepped forward half a pace, voice sweet but carrying steel.

"My son protects what is right," she said softly. "He always has and always will. Those who prey on the weak… they find no mercy when he stands in their path."

The murmurs grew louder, shifting tone: shock giving way to awe, resentment to reluctant respect.

Elara moved around the counter, eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Thank you," she said to Damien, voice thick. "For bringing her back. For… for stopping him."

Damien offered a gentle nod.

"She is strong," he said quietly. "She deserves safety. As do all who walk these halls."

A younger adventurer near the quest board spoke up, voice carrying.

"He took down Garran? And the other two? Alone?"

Sera answered before Damien could.

"Not alone," she said. "But he led. He ended it. I saw him move… like nothing I've ever witnessed."

Another voice, older, from a table near the hearth.

"New blood with old skill. Gods-blessed, maybe."

The evaluator Thorne rubbed his beard.

"Guild will investigate," he said. "But if your word holds—and I see no reason to doubt it—there'll be a commendation. Maybe more. Ranks don't mean much when bravery speaks this loud."

Rosalynn's fingers tightened on Damien's arm, pride radiating from her like heat.

"My son needs no commendation," she murmured, though loud enough for nearby ears. "He acts from honor. From love of what is right. But the guild would do well to remember who guards its roads now."

Whispers spread like wildfire through the hall.

"Damien the Brave…"

"Saved Sera from Garran's filth…"

"Silver-haired mother fights like a lioness beside him…"

Damien guided Rosalynn toward the counter, Sera falling in step beside them.

"We completed the Moonspire quest," he said calmly to Elara, sliding the wrapped bundle across the wood. "Twenty silver, as promised."

Elara opened the cloth with trembling fingers, inspecting the glowing blossoms.

"Perfect," she whispered. "More than perfect." She counted out the coins, then added a small extra pouch. "Bonus for the pelts you could have claimed from the wolves… and for today."

Damien accepted the payment with a quiet nod.

"Thank you," he said. "We will return soon. There are higher paths to walk."

As they turned to leave, the hall parted for them. Adventurers stepped aside, some offering respectful nods, others staring openly. Sera lingered a moment longer, then hurried after them.

"Wait," she called softly outside the doors.

Damien paused on the steps, Rosalynn at his side.

Sera approached, eyes downcast at first, then lifting to meet his gaze.

"I meant every word in there," she said quietly. "And… if you ever need another blade at your back… I would follow you. Gladly."

Rosalynn studied her for a long moment, then smiled soft, and approving.

"You have courage," she said gently. "And gratitude. But we don't require you"

Sera's breath caught.

"Thank you," she whispered. "Both of you."

She bowed slightly, then melted into the night streets.

Damien drew Rosalynn close as they began the walk up the ridge.

"My perfect Mother," he murmured against her hair. "You stood so proud tonight. So fierce and the city sees what I have always known: you are my strength made visible."

Rosalynn pressed against him, arms wrapping around his waist.

"And you are my heart made manifest," she answered, voice thick with emotion. "My unstoppable son. My everything. Let the rumors spread. Let them whisper your name in awe. Mother will guard every secret… and burn any who dare twist them."

The lanterns of Ridgeview glowed ahead, warm and welcoming.

Inside waited Violet and Liliana.

Inside waited family.

And in the city below, the name Damien began to echo differently: not as upstart, but as protector. As hero.

The empire's shadow lengthened, quiet and inevitable.
