Chapter 112 - The Name Beneath The Name

The darkness opened its eyes.

I couldn't move.

Neither could anyone else.

For several seconds, there was nothing except that enormous eye staring upward from beneath the buried world.

It wasn't red.

It wasn't silver.

It wasn't gold.

It was completely black.

Not darkness around an eye.

Darkness inside it.

As though the eye itself contained a place where light had never existed.

The original child tightened her grip around my hand.

"Don't look at it."

I tore my gaze away.

"What is it?"

She didn't answer.

The First Hunger did.

"The first choice."

My heart dropped.

"You said that already."

"No."

He shook his head.

"I was wrong."

The ground trembled.

A crack spread beneath Rowan's feet.

He jumped backward.

"What do you mean you were wrong?"

The First Hunger stared into the darkness.

"I thought consequence was the oldest thing."

His voice became quieter.

"I was created after the choice."

The golden-eyed girl stepped closer.

"Then what's beneath us?"

The First Hunger swallowed.

"The thing that existed before anyone chose."

Silence.

Lena looked at me.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It doesn't have to," Rowan said.

His eyes remained fixed on the opening.

"Not everything has to make sense before it exists."

The black eye blinked.

The entire buried city shook.

People screamed.

Ancient structures collapsed in the distance.

The Memory Tree bent toward the opening as though something beneath it was pulling on its roots.

Then the voice came again.

"Aurelia."

I felt the name inside my bones.

But this time, it wasn't calling me.

It was remembering me.

I stepped forward.

The original child pulled me back.

"No."

"I need to know."

"You don't."

"I do."

"You'll remember something you were never supposed to remember."

I looked at her.

"That's what everyone keeps saying."

My voice shook.

"Every time I get close to the truth, someone tells me I'm not ready."

I pulled my hand free.

"I'm done being protected from my own life."

The first Ariana looked at me.

For a moment, she looked proud.

Then terrified.

"That's what she said too."

"Who?"

She pointed toward the darkness.

"The first Aurelia."

The world seemed to stop.

My breath caught.

"There was another?"

The first Ariana nodded.

"The original."

I stared at her.

"Then who am I?"

She looked at the golden-eyed girl.

Then the red-eyed boy.

Then the original child.

Finally, she looked back at me.

"You are the memory of her."

My heart sank.

"No."

"Yes."

"I am Aurelia."

"You carry her memory."

"I have my own memories."

"They were built around hers."

"No."

The word came out harder.

"I lived them."

"Yes."

"They happened to me."

"Yes."

"Then I'm real."

The first Ariana stepped closer.

"You are more real than the people who created you ever understood."

That stopped me.

"What does that mean?"

Before she could answer, the black eye closed.

The darkness beneath the city disappeared.

For one breath, everything became silent.

Then a hand emerged.

A human hand.

It gripped the edge of the opening.

Then another.

Something began pulling itself upward.

Rowan raised his weapon.

"Everyone back!"

Nobody moved fast enough.

A figure climbed out.

A woman.

She was covered in dust.

Her clothes looked ancient.

Her hair was silver.

Her skin was marked with symbols I had never seen before.

But her face...

I stopped breathing.

It was mine.

Not Ariana's.

Not Aurelia's.

Mine.

The woman looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"You finally came back."

I couldn't speak.

The golden-eyed girl whispered,

"Who is she?"

The woman looked at her.

"You."

The girl froze.

"You are the possibility I lost."

Then she looked at the red-eyed boy.

"And you."

The boy stepped backward.

"You are the consequence I carried."

The First Hunger stared at her.

"Mother."

The woman smiled sadly.

"Not anymore."

He flinched.

She looked at me.

"But you…"

She stepped closer.

"You were the one I couldn't save."

My throat tightened.

"Save me from what?"

She touched my cheek.

"From becoming human."

The words made no sense.

"What?"

"You were never meant to become a person."

Lena immediately stepped between us.

"Back away from her."

The woman looked at Lena.

"You protect her."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she's my friend."

The woman smiled.

"Then you have already done what we failed to do."

"What?"

"Choose her."

Lena frowned.

The woman looked back at me.

"That was the mistake."

I felt anger rising.

"What mistake?"

"We believed the Source needed a vessel."

She glanced toward the four lights surrounding me.

"We believed memory needed a body."

She looked at the golden-eyed girl.

"We believed possibility needed a future."

Then the First Hunger.

"We believed consequence needed a monster."

Finally, she looked toward the original child.

"And we believed choice needed a god."

The child stared at her.

"What did it need?"

The woman smiled.

"People."

The word echoed through the buried city.

People.

Not vessels.

Not Heirs.

Not weapons.

People.

I looked at my hands.

"So what am I?"

The woman answered softly.

"The first attempt."

My heart stopped.

"At what?"

"To create someone who could remember everything and still choose to live."

I looked toward the First Hunger.

"And him?"

"The first consequence."

The golden-eyed girl.

"The first possibility."

The original child.

"The first choice."

"And you?"

The woman looked at the sky.

"The first failure."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I created all four of you."

The First Hunger stepped forward.

"You abandoned us."

She closed her eyes.

"I thought I was protecting you."

"You buried us."

"I was afraid."

"You let them erase us."

"I know."

"You watched them turn me into a monster."

"I know."

His voice broke.

"Why?"

The woman looked at him.

"Because I believed forgetting would save you."

The First Hunger laughed.

A broken, bitter sound.

"It didn't."

"No."

She looked at me.

"It only made the pain wait."

The buried city became silent.

Then the original child stepped forward.

"What is beneath us?"

The woman looked down.

"The fifth."

"What is it?"

She hesitated.

"The beginning before the beginning."

The golden-eyed girl frowned.

"There were four."

"There were four that humanity remembers."

The first Ariana whispered,

"And the fifth?"

The woman looked at me.

"The one humanity never knew existed."

A symbol appeared in the air.

Five circles.

Four familiar.

One dark.

The dark circle pulsed.

My silver mark burned.

I dropped to one knee.

"Aurelia!"

Lena caught me.

The woman rushed forward.

"Don't touch her!"

Too late.

The dark circle entered my chest.

I screamed.

Memories exploded through me.

A world without humans.

A world before the Source.

A world where the four lights had not yet separated.

And something else.

A presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Not creating.

Not destroying.

Observing.

I saw the first people discover the Source.

I saw the first Architect.

I saw the first Heir.

I saw the Mother.

I saw the First Hunger.

But behind all of them stood something else.

Something they had never noticed.

Something that had watched every choice.

Every civilization.

Every death.

Every beginning.

Every ending.

The Witness.

Not the Source.

Something older.

Something outside the Source.

I opened my eyes.

The woman was kneeling beside me.

"What did you see?"

I could barely breathe.

"The Source wasn't the first."

Her face went pale.

"No."

"The Architects weren't the first."

She shook her head.

"No."

"The first civilization wasn't the first."

Her eyes filled with fear.

"No."

I stared at the darkness beneath us.

"And humanity wasn't the first."

She didn't answer.

The First Hunger whispered,

"Then what was?"

I looked toward the fifth circle.

The answer came from somewhere inside me.

"Someone was watching."

The original child stepped backward.

The golden-eyed girl grabbed my arm.

Rowan raised his weapon again.

Lena stood beside me.

The buried people fell silent.

Then every light in the ancient city went out.

One by one.

Until only the fifth circle remained.

Black.

Pulsing.

Alive.

A voice came from it.

Not male.

Not female.

Not human.

Not ancient.

Something beyond all those things.

"You have remembered enough."

I couldn't move.

The voice continued.

"Now forget."

The entire buried world vanished.

And I woke up alone.

Not in the sanctuary.

Not in the ancient city.

Not anywhere I recognized.

I was standing in a white room.

There were no doors.

No windows.

No walls that I could see.

Just endless white.

I looked down.

I was wearing a simple white dress.

My hands were empty.

My memories were gone.

I couldn't remember Lena.

Or Rowan.

Or the First Hunger.

Or the golden-eyed girl.

I couldn't remember the first Ariana.

I couldn't remember the Mother.

I couldn't even remember my own name.

Then someone stepped behind me.

I turned.

A little girl stood there.

Silver eyes.

Dark hair.

My face.

She smiled.

And whispered,

"Hello."

I stared at her.

"Who are you?"

She tilted her head.

Then she answered with a sentence that made my blood run cold.

"I'm the part of you that remembers what you are about to forget."
