Leah nearly ran back to her room. As soon as Emma's back vanished behind the door and the sound of her footsteps faded, Leah locked the door with trembling hands. Her heart hammered against her ribs as if it wanted to leap from her chest. She hurried to the nightstand, pulling the drawer open with slow, deliberate movements to avoid making the slightest sound.
"It is still here," Leah whispered. Her breath hitched in relief when she saw the scrap of paper she had hidden that morning still lying there.
The relief was short lived. Fear ambushed her again, the sensation of being watched by a thousand invisible eyes. With hands still shaking violently, she scanned every corner of the vast room, searching for the safest place to hide the folded paper containing that lethal secret.
Leah's gaze fell upon a large wardrobe that looked both luxurious and imposing. At the far end, rows of shelves showcased a collection of famous designer bags.
