Chapter 6 - Her world

Payday had come again, bringing the familiar mix of relief, exhaustion, and quiet satisfaction. Alexandra carefully folded the bundle of clothes she had bought for Mira and Luna, her fingers brushing over the soft fabric as if she could pass her love into each thread.

The girls squealed the moment she walked through the door, abandoning their homework to inspect the small treasures she had brought home. Mira twirled in her dress, laughing as it swirled around her knees, while Luna held her new shoes close, pressing them to her chest as if afraid they might vanish.

"Mom, you're the best!" Mira exclaimed, her eyes shining with excitement.

"You always make everything better!" Luna added, her grin wide and innocent.

Alexandra smiled softly, feeling the weight of the day ease slightly. The apartment was small, the bills looming, the rent due soon, the world outside unkind—but here, in this moment, all of that disappeared. Their joy was her reward, their laughter a shield against the harshness that always waited beyond the door.

She knelt to adjust Luna's hair, brushing back stray strands. "You two make it all worth it," she whispered. "Always remember that."

The girls didn't need to hear more. They hugged her tightly, pressing their little faces to her chest, and Alexandra let herself savor the warmth for just a moment before setting them down.

Later, as she cooked dinner, Alexandra found herself glancing at the calendar. School fees. Rent. Groceries. Bills. Every coin she earned had a place, every penny accounted for, yet it never seemed enough. She tightened her jaw and set the thought aside. She had always found a way before, and she would again. She had to—for Mira and Luna.

While she washed the dishes afterward, Alexandra's mind wandered to the life she had imagined once. A life where nothing ever seemed so heavy. She shook her head, pushing the thought away. Dreams like that had a way of breaking hearts in her world. She had no time to dwell. There was work to be done, meals to cook, children to care for, a life to keep going.

Meanwhile, far across the city, a man adjusted his cufflinks in the corner office of a towering glass building. The streets below teemed with life, but his gaze barely reached them. His mind was focused, calculating. Every decision, every move, every interaction weighed against power, influence, and the outcomes he sought.

He was strong. Handsome. Unreachable. A force in the world that moved silently but decisively. And although his life had no connection to Alexandra—or the two little girls who clung to her for warmth and security—he existed as a presence, a shadow on the city, quietly shaping events in ways no one yet understood.

Back at home, Alexandra tucked Mira and Luna into bed. Their small hands clutched hers tightly as they whispered goodnight. She kissed their foreheads, brushing hair from their faces and smiling despite the exhaustion pressing against her bones.

"Always. I'll always take care of you," she whispered, her voice soft but firm.

As she left their room, Alexandra lingered by the window, gazing out at the city skyline. Lights flickered in the distance, and the streets below hummed with life. The world was wide. Full of unknowns. Full of challenges.

Her heart ached for the days ahead, the struggles that never ended, the weight she carried alone. And yet, she felt a spark—a stubborn flame that refused to die. She would protect these girls. She would keep them safe. She would find a way, no matter what.

Some shadows were far away.

Some threats hadn't arrived yet.

And some futures… were still waiting to unfold.
