Chapter 33 - Chapter 33: The Void

Dorian drifted in darkness. There was no ground beneath him, no sky above, no sense of direction or distance. The void stretched endlessly in every direction, smooth and absolute, like space stripped of stars. It did not press against him or pull him deeper. It simply waited. The darkness felt aware in a way he could not explain, neither hungry nor hostile, only impossibly patient. Dorian wasn't falling. His body remained suspended unless he consciously tried to move, held in place by something that seemed to have decided he was not finished yet. Then the memories came. His father's hand struck his mother hard enough to send her into the wall. Dorian heard himself scream as a child and watched his smaller body charge forward, fists useless as he tried to pull the man away from her.

His father turned and caught him by the throat. Fingers tightened. Dorian's feet left the floor. Air disappeared while his father laughed in his face. "You aren't strong enough, boy. How can you make me stop?" Dorian clawed at the hand crushing his throat and swung anyway. The memory shifted. Fists hammered his face and stomach. Blood filled his mouth. His vision blurred, but even then he kept getting back up because rage carried him farther than his body could. Eventually his father dropped him. Then the man walked toward a door somewhere beyond Dorian's reach. It opened. His mother screamed. Dorian staggered after him, chasing a voice he could never reach quickly enough. The memory shattered.

Pieces of the room broke apart like glass and dissolved into the void until only Dorian remained, breathing hard with his hands shaking. The pain belonged to another lifetime, but the anger had never gone anywhere. Darkness moved closer around him, not forcefully, but with unmistakable intent. Then it spoke.

"I AM EREBUS."

The name did not arrive as sound. It settled directly into the void and through Dorian with it. The voice carried neither warmth nor threat. It was calm, layered, and absolute, coming from everywhere at once.

"YOU EXIST WITHIN WHAT WAS SEALED."

The darkness tightened around him.

"THE SYSTEM WAS CREATED TO ELEVATE. TO REFINE ENLIGHTENED RACES. TO ALLOW THOSE CAPABLE OF GROWTH TO RISE BEYOND MORTALITY."

Images formed around Dorian. Civilizations rose from primitive settlements into impossible cities. Individuals broke through physical and magical limits, climbing higher through effort, suffering, and will.

"GODHOOD WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE HOARDED. IT WAS MEANT TO BE EARNED. THROUGH PAIN. THROUGH GROWTH. THROUGH WILLPOWER STRONG ENOUGH TO SURPASS THOSE AROUND YOU."

The visions darkened.

"LONG AGO, THE GODS LEARNED FEAR."

Dorian felt it before the next image formed. Not reverence. Panic. Pantheons standing together because something beyond them had forced enemies into unity.

"THEY SAW WHAT EXISTED BEYOND THEIR DOMINION. THEY SAW THE VOID. THEY SAW CREATION."

The darkness surrounding Dorian deepened until even the distant visions seemed small inside it.

"WE ARE SOVEREIGNS. CREATION AND I ARE FORCES OLDER THAN THEIR PANTHEONS. FOUNDATIONAL ASPECTS OF EXISTENCE ITSELF."

Gods appeared in the darkness, countless figures gathered together beneath forces too vast for their forms to contain.

"THEY SEALED US AWAY. VOID AND CREATION ALIKE. THEY CAST US INTO A SEPARATE DIMENSION STRIPPED OF LIFE AND CUT US FROM REALITY."

The vision vanished.

"THEN THEY CORRUPTED THE SYSTEM."

Something changed in Erebus' presence. The voice remained controlled, but Dorian felt the hatred beneath it.

"RULES WERE BENT. PATHS NARROWED. LIMITS WERE CREATED WHERE NONE HAD EXISTED. THE GODS HARVEST TALENT, CULTIVATE CHAMPIONS, AND THEN STOP THEM BEFORE THEY CAN BECOME THREATS. ASCENSION IS CAPPED AT DEMIGOD. TRUE GODHOOD IS FORBIDDEN."

The void drew closer.

"THIS IS A VIOLATION."

Erebus did not need to shout.

"ALL MUST BE ALLOWED TO RISE OR FALL THROUGH THEIR OWN WILL. STRENGTH MUST DECIDE."

Dorian remained silent.

"YOUR LIFE BEFORE THE SYSTEM MARKED YOU. YOU LIVED IN FEAR FIRST. THEN ANGER. THEN RAGE."

Memories stirred again at the edges of the darkness.

"YOU NEVER KNEW WHETHER EACH DAY WOULD BE THE DAY YOUR FATHER KILLED YOU OR YOUR MOTHER. THAT UNCERTAINTY CARVED YOU DEEPER THAN ANY BLESSING COULD."

The silence that followed seemed endless.

"YOUR HATRED SPOKE LOUDLY, DORIAN BLACK. YOUR RAGE SPOKE LOUDER."

Dorian looked into the darkness surrounding him. "So you heard me."

"I DID."

The answer came immediately.

"I OFFER YOU PATRONAGE. A PATH THAT DOES NOT KNEEL TO GODS."

For the first time since Helena died, something other than grief moved through him.

"A PATH CAPABLE OF BREAKING DIVINITY ITSELF."

Dorian's eyes narrowed.

"I WILL EMPOWER YOU. YOUR CLASS WILL EVOLVE."

Pressure settled around his awareness.

"YOU WILL BECOME A GODSLAYER."

The word carried no ceremony. It sounded like a function being defined.

"YOU WILL GAIN THE CAPACITY TO WOUND DIVINITY. TO TEAR IT APART. EVENTUALLY, TO END IT. THROUGH YOU, THE SYSTEM MAY BE FREED FROM THEIR CONTROL."

Images appeared again. Thrones cracked beneath blackened power. Divine bodies broke. Beings worshiped across worlds screamed as something mortal reached them and proved they could die.

"THIS PATH WILL NOT BE EASY. IT WILL DEMAND MORE THAN YOU CURRENTLY UNDERSTAND."

Dorian spoke before Erebus could continue. "Will it give me enough power to kill Wilhelm?" His voice remained steady despite the hatred beneath it. "And that fucking Trickster God?"

A moment passed.

"YES."

That was all Dorian needed.

"EVENTUALLY. POWER MUST STILL BE EARNED. YOU MUST GROW."

The void shifted.

"BUT THERE IS A COST."

Dorian felt the curse before Erebus named it. The contamination that had spread through his arm, shoulder, and chest. Blackmark. The repeated magical strain. Everything his body had endured since the first night of the Tutorial.

"YOUR BODY IS RUINED."

Dorian's expression didn't change.

"THE DAMAGE EXTENDS BEYOND WHAT EVEN I CAN REPAIR WITHOUT DESTROYING WHAT YOU ARE. THE CORRUPTION HAS PENETRATED TOO DEEPLY. YOUR CURRENT FORM CANNOT SUSTAIN THE ASCENSION AHEAD."

"So fix it."

"I CANNOT."

The answer came without apology.

"YOU MUST BECOME SOMETHING ELSE."

Light ignited within the void. System panes unfolded before Dorian.

[RACIAL EVOLUTION AVAILABLE]

VOID-TOUCHED HUMAN

Retains Human physiology.

Enhanced affinity scaling.

Structural instability likely.

UNDEAD

Extreme resilience.

Severe corruption potential.

High social hostility.

UMBRAL REVENANT

Half-living Shadow-bound existence similar to a Wraith.

Significant emotional suppression.

DARK ELF

Adaptive Shadow physiology.

Increased longevity.

High affinity scaling.

Dorian barely looked past the final option. "Dark Elf."

[RACIAL EVOLUTION SELECTED]

DARK ELF

[CONFIRM?]

"Yes." The change tore through him. His back arched as his body rebuilt itself from within. Skin lost its warmth first, pigment shifting until his flesh settled into a dark gray tone. His ears lengthened into sharp points as bone and cartilage reshaped with grinding pressure. His hair rapidly lost its color until white strands hung around his face. Something burned behind his eyes, forcing them shut as power moved through nerves that had never been designed to carry it. When Dorian opened them again, red light flared through the void before settling into a steady crimson glow. His senses sharpened. His heartbeat slowed. Shadow no longer felt like something surrounding him. It felt familiar. Close. The void steadied as the transformation ended.

[RACIAL EVOLUTION COMPLETE]

HUMAN → DARK ELF

Erebus spoke again.

"YOU CANNOT RETURN TO EARTH YET."

Dorian looked upward even though there was nothing to look toward.

"EARTH REMAINS UNDER ASCENSION. THE PLANET ITSELF IS BEING REBORN THROUGH THE PROCESS. MORE IMPORTANTLY, YOU ARE TOO WEAK."

Dorian almost laughed.

"YOU MUST REACH D GRADE BEFORE RETURN BECOMES POSSIBLE."

"Then I'll reach D Grade."

"I EXPECTED THAT ANSWER."

The darkness shifted, and another world began forming beneath him like an image viewed through black water.

"THERE IS A PLACE WHERE THE SYSTEM HAS RULED FOR ERAS. WORLDS THERE HAVE BEEN SHAPED ENTIRELY AROUND ASCENSION. GROWTH IS FASTER."

The vision sharpened.

"SO IS DEATH."

Dorian saw a tower.

"THE DANGER IS ABSOLUTE."

"Send me." There was no hesitation. The void folded. Stone slammed into Dorian's back hard enough to drive the air from his lungs. He rolled once across cold ground before stopping against uneven rock. Wind struck his face. Lightning tore across a black sky, and thunder followed close enough to vibrate through his newly remade bones. Dorian pushed himself upright and stared ahead. A tower dominated the horizon. Calling it a building felt ridiculous. It was larger than any mountain he had ever seen, an impossible structure rising so high that its upper reaches disappeared beyond layers of storm and cloud. Entire sections appeared to have been built over older ones, architecture stacked upon ruins, walls upon walls, as though civilizations had spent ages adding to something that had already existed before them. Faint currents of energy traveled across its surface. Even from this distance, Dorian could feel the System saturating the world around it. Caligos did not merely use the System. The planet felt built around it. A pane appeared.

[CURE THE CURSE QUEST COMPLETED]

[RACE EVOLUTION EXPLOIT DETECTED]

[BONUS REWARD APPLIED!]

[CURSE-DERIVED SKILLS AVAILABLE]

Dorian stared at the notifications. This fucking System is unreal. I technically cured the curse by replacing the body it infected, and it rewards me for exploiting the quest? His attention dropped toward his right arm. The gray skin was clean where the spreading corruption had once consumed it, but something new had remained. Black markings began at his wrist and climbed upward in interconnected lines, circles, and angular symbols until they reached his shoulder. The pattern resembled an elaborate magic circle stretched across his arm. Dorian touched it once. Shadow stirred beneath his fingertips. Helena's face came back to him immediately. Her smile in the classroom. Her hand against his chest.

Her final words. Then her heart lying on the stone inches from his fingers. Dorian closed his eyes. Helena, I'll avenge you. I swear it. Wilhelm, his God, every bastard responsible for turning our lives into entertainment. Whatever I have to become, whatever I have to do to get strong enough, I'll do it. His jaw tightened. And if the Gods are real, then I hope that means there's something after death too. I hope you're somewhere better than this.

Another pane opened.

[WELCOME TO CALIGOS]

WORLD OF THE LIVING TOWER

[TUTORIAL REWARDS AVAILABLE]

Power surged through Dorian before he could dismiss it.

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL UP]

[LEVEL 20 CONFIRMED]

The rush hit differently inside his new body. Strength flooded muscles that had been rebuilt from the ground up while mana expanded through channels that felt wider and more responsive than his human ones had ever been. When the sensation settled, a black loot box materialized on the stone in front of him. It was solid, featureless, and waiting. Dorian looked at it for only a second before a larger System pane appeared above it.

[NEW QUEST]

CLIMB THE LIVING TOWER.

REACH THE TOP LEVEL.

OR DIE TRYING.

Lightning split the sky again. Dorian raised his eyes toward the Tower until his neck hurt, but he still couldn't see the top. Somewhere behind him was Earth. Wilhelm. The Trickster God. The people who had treated suffering like entertainment and Helena's death like another condition on a quest. Somewhere above him was the power he needed to reach them. Dorian stepped toward the Tower.
