Chapter 2 - CH2: Traveling To The Com Tower

Within the hour, I found myself on the surface. I immediately began heading west to my ultimate goal, the com tower, by taking the abandoned back roads of the old world. The entire first day was filled with constant travel. I only stopped to eat, relieve myself or mark a point of intrest that I wanted to check out in the future.

When night fell, I parked my Krix in a old warehouse building to hide it and made my way up to the office area that was higher up. I spent a few hours looting the place, finding a few old credit chips and grabbing data shards from the computers on site. Beyond that, it was mostly devoid of any useful loot. After setting up my cot, I made made myself some synthetic coffee and had a all-purpose meal bar for dinner.

The synthetic coffee isn't a good choice before bed but it helps the meal bar go down as it is one of the worst tasting things I've ever had. As I ate in the darkness, taking a sip with each bite, I heard the familiar sound of hover thrusters flying above. I quickly shoved the meal bar in my mouth and chugged down the coffee before silently making my way to a broken window.

With a full moon, I was able to see the ship flying over without my helmet. Judging by its elongated triangular shape, it was a Daviirn War Bird. It flew over the area, doing a light scan for humans. When it hovered neared the building to scan it, I grabbed my helmet and quickly put it on. Hiding in a shadowy corner, I grasped my rifle and actived the void relay on my wrist.

Staying perfectly still, the War Bird slowly moved around the warehouse as it scanned it repeatedly. As long as I didn't get directly scanned or move to much, the void relay would keep my existence hidden from its scanners. The War Bird slowly did a full circle around the warehouse as my heart raced against my chest. When it got near the windows of the office, it lingered for a moment.

Patshh

Patshh

My heart skipped a beat as I heard the sound of two Daviirn soldiers being deployed from a few small drop pods on its back. There were two loud booms from them hitting the ground and the War Bird continued to move along. Soon, the War Bird left the area and I let out a slow sigh of relief. With a tap on the side of my helmet, my night vision turned on.

I stepped out of the corner with my rifle and my void relay automatically turned off from the movement. Slowly and quitely, I exited the office area and got into a perfect position to ambush the enemy. The catwalk attached to the office area allowed me to move up and round to the entrance. I didn't have to wait long before I saw two blue lights coming from the entrance.

Two bulky figures slowly stepped into the warehouse, sweeping the area as they kept their plasma rifles in a rested ready position. They wore bulky black menacing armor that covered most of their bodies. However, I could see the dark blue skin of their necks, lower arms and feet. Their heads was covered with a black helmet mixed between a human skull and a gas mask, the blue light coming from a lamp on their foreheads.

The most distinct feature of the Daviirn besides their humanoid figure, blue skin and bald heads were their feet. At least, for the male gender that is. Their feet were like an elephants foot but with four long toes at the front and two long toes at the back pointing at an angle. A female Daviirn looked closer to a human in appearance and were even considered hot by the male population.

They didn't have the weird feet and had hair that was in various shades of blue. Ironically enough, the hair of a female Daviirn was an important body organ like that of a certain blue alien race from a certain old world movie. The males had somthing similar but it was just a single braid like organ that was protected by their helmet. I shook my head of thoughts about this race.

Slowly standing up, I aimed my weapon at one of the two soldiers down below. One raised his hand to signal for a stop before making strange gestures. Both of them slowly turned to the left and their blue lights landed on my Krix. The blue lights grew lighter in color and I saw my footsteps appear with a white hue. My expression hardened as I aimed at the middle of the right Daviirn's neck.

'Fucking scouters. If it was just simple foot soldiers, I could just let them pass.' I lamented solemnly before pulling the trigger.

Thump, Thump!

Thump!

The first round bit into the enemies neck, forcing him to make a weird gargle sound as he dropped to one knee. The second round bit into the side of his friends neck, the shot being fatal and making him fall to the ground limply. The third round bit into the wounded scouts neck again and hit perfectly, putting his life to an end as well. I quickly slinged my rifle over my back and ran back into the office.

Packing up my cot, I made my way down the catwalk stairs with speed and down to the ground floor. Placing my cot into the cargo hold of my Krix, I drove it over to the two dead bodies. I parked it before jumping off of it, leaving it running as I neared their bodies. Dark blue blood puddled on the floor but it was something I've seen more than I've wanted too.

I grabbed their weapons and stashed them in my cargo hold before scavenging all the ammunition that I could. Afterwards, I pulled out two usb like devices with a suction cup at one end. A new toy I had gotten from dad a few days ago. I stuck them both to the helmets and watched as a small screen lit up on them. A progress bar appeared and began to slowly tick as it worked its magic.

That was when I heard hover thrusters again, ones that were much louder and stronger. Too big for a War Bird. I squinted my eyes curiously as I pulled my rifle into my hands and stepped closer to the warehouse entrance. Looking up into the sky, I didn't have to wait long to see what it was. A ship with an elongated cockpit, massive wings and a massive transport box hooked together by large arms jetted by in the sky.

It was flanked by two War Birds but they didn't stop and kept moving along with the transport craft. I blinked a few times, realizing that transport craft had a low profile but heavily armed escort with it. Not only that but it was headed towards the coms center. The single scouting War Bird from earlier told me that whatever it was holding, it was important and a high value secret.

Ba-deep!

Clink!

Ba-deep!

Clink!

A successful chime echoed behind me one after another with a metal click, making me smile. Slinging my rifle again, I rushed over to the bodies again. I pulled the helmets off of their heads and tossed them into my cargo hold, taking back the two hacking devices beforehand. I quickly went back to the bodies and pulled out a knife, cutting off both braids from the back of their heads.

I went back to my Krix and placed the braids into a bag before putting them inside the cargo hold. Mounting the vehicle, I took a moment to look over the hacking devices. This was a little gadget that could hack into the interface of Daviirn armor, getting rid of a tracking system inside of them while also disengaging the locks of their helmets.

If I can bring back the helmets of those scouters, I'll be in for one fat paycheck along with the weapons and braids. Yet, I needed to leave now. These devices had to activate the tracking alarms before cutting them off, so my location was revealed at the moment. Putting both devices into a pouch on my chest piece, I shifted my Krix into gear and took off quickly.

With my night vision, I didn't need to turn on the vehicles lights and could rush down the roads. After a few hours of fast paced travel, I came to a stop at an old broken house surrounded by trees. I found a rather hidden spot for the Krix and set up my cot inside the house. Turning off the night vision of my helmet, I slowly drifted off to sleep with my rifle in my hands.

I was woken up early in the morning by the sounds of hover craft flying above, jumping to my feet with my rifle raised. My heat thumped against my chest like a war drum and I swept the remains of the broken house. Only after the area grew silent again and I saw the house was empty did I calm down. After a cup of synthetic coffee, I hopped back onto my Krix and continued traveling west.

By now, most of my journey had taken an off-road approach as there seemed to be an even more increased Daviirn presence in the area. That didn't deter me from continuing to move but I did grow more cautious. The day repeated much like yesterday, albeit slower and ended with a calm night. The next morning when I woke up, I checked my gear once more and made sure the DC4 charge was in working condition again.

I drove my Krix closer to my destination until the beginning of the afternoon where I parked it in a hidden space. With a button on the key fab, my Krix shimmered as its reactive camo activated. I traveled through a dense forest for a few hours with my rifle in hand. Eventually, the trees thinned out and ended at the top of a hill. I came to a stop at a thick tree and crouched down.

A good distance away, there was a small old abandoned farm that was nestled within a large forested area all around it. Fields of overgrown wheat surrounded the house and a large barn behind it. I raised my right hand and turned a small dial on the side of my helmet. My vision zoomed in and gave me a far better look at the area.

The house had a few foot soldiers standing guard out front, thinner than the scouters with a smooth black helmet with a gas mask like bottom half. They held large rifles that went over one arm while their other hand would grasp the side grip to aim it. Their aim was operated by their helmets and it would take 5 humans to take it down. The foot soildiers were like walking tanks but they all had the same flaw.

Exposed necks, allowing a well placed shot to kill them instantly. It had to deal with a special organ that once damaged the slightest bit, their death was all but guaranteed. I moved my head up, seeing a large spire like antenna sticking out of the center of the house. As long as I get to the side of the house, the blast from the DC4 charge will destory that com tower.

The Daviirn were extremely arrogant, especially when they know their technology was far more advanced than our own. So, they rarely made a plan b and assumed we couldn't do much. Besides the two guards outside, I'd say there is probably only a few other soldiers inside of that house. Because of their arrogance, they didn't set up communication relays in the case that a tower goes down.

So, destroying this tower will bring down the entire local communication grid. With a massive range, that would ruin any communication between their troops. Not only that but it would cut off two Daviirn military cities from communicating directly to each other. With a small on site presence, this would be an easy task.

Yet....

Turning the dial to zoom out a bit, I saw the numerous foot soldiers with a few scouters patrolling through the wheat fields. An extreme abnormality that made my job even more difficult. I saw some movememt behind the barn and saw something that made my eyes widen. There, in a part of the field that was trampled down, I saw four hover craft. In fact, it was the same ones I saw from the first night I began heading here.

I could see the open door of the transport craft, two foot soldiers carrying down a large metal crate. Walking in front of them was a Daviirn War Officer. In the high chain of command, female Daviirn's take up a majority of their positions. The entire race is lead by an Empress even.

With gothic like black armor over her tall slender body, it made the hot alien look extremely menacing. More so with clawed hands and clawed toes. She wore a helmet much like the foot soldiers but without the gas mask like bottom half. The black braid looking organ flipped about behind her with each step.

I watched her lead the two foot soldiers over to a group of human soldiers taken hostage, surrounded by even more scouters. I was even more shocked when I saw something move in the treeline behind them. Looking further up, I saw two shimmering silhouettes crawling over the ground. Instantly, I recognized who they were.

Jaeger Rangers.

A kind of troop that moves in two man teams, dealing with special operations and high value missions. Looking back at the hostages who had their helmets pulled off as the Daviirn War Officer drew closer, I realized that there was more going on than I understood. For a moment, I wondered if mom knew about this or not. It would explain why she was so against my actions for once.
