Chapter 88 - Chapter 88 — “The Lion Who Stayed”

Year X784 — Early Summer

Location: Magnolia · Fairy Tail / City Streets

---

Lucy POV

Loke was acting strange.

Not the usual too-smug, too-flirtatious, please-stop-winking strange—

but quiet.

It started small. He'd disappear between missions. He'd laugh a beat too late. When Lucy called him, sometimes… he didn't answer right away.

At first, she told herself she was imagining it.

After Phantom Lord, everyone was tired. Everyone was healing.

Still—

"Loke?" Lucy called one afternoon, keys chiming softly at her hip. "You're spacing out again."

They were sitting on the guild's front steps, Magnolia warm and lazy around them.

Loke jolted slightly, then smiled. "Sorry, Lucy. Must've been distracted by your beauty."

She rolled her eyes automatically—then stopped.

He looked… pale.

Not sick. Not injured.

Just thin. Like someone stretched too far.

"…You okay?" she asked quietly.

For a moment, he didn't answer.

Then—"Lucy," he said, voice gentle, "if I asked you to trust me… would you?"

Her heart skipped.

"Of course," she said without hesitation. "Why would you even ask that?"

Loke's smile wavered.

"…Then walk with me tonight."

---

The city was quieter after sunset.

Lanterns glowed along the streets, reflecting softly off cobblestone. Lucy followed Loke past shops, past familiar corners—until they reached the park.

The stars were out.

Loke stopped beneath a large tree.

"…Do you know," he asked, not looking at her, "how long Celestial Spirits can stay in the human world without a contract?"

Lucy frowned. "Only when summoned… or through a gate."

"…Usually."

Her fingers tightened around Aquarius's key.

"Loke," she said slowly, "why are you asking that?"

He turned to her.

And for the first time since she'd met him—

he didn't look playful.

"I'm a Celestial Spirit," he said.

The world tilted.

"…What?"

"The Lion Spirit," Loke continued. "Leo of the Zodiac."

Lucy's breath caught painfully in her throat.

"…That's— that's not funny."

"I know."

The smile he gave her then was soft. Regretful.

"…I broke the rules."

---

Loke POV

I'd always known how this would end.

I just didn't expect to want it to last so badly.

Lucy stared at me like the world had cracked down the middle.

"…You've been here," she whispered. "All this time—without a master?"

I nodded.

"I chose to stay. Years ago." My voice felt steadier than my heart. "My previous contractor… she died."

Lucy swallowed.

"She was sick. Weak. And still—she kept summoning me." I clenched my fist. "I asked her to stop. She wouldn't."

"…So you broke the rules," Lucy murmured.

"I did," I admitted. "I severed the contract. I stayed behind. I wanted her to live."

The wind rustled the leaves above us.

"But Celestial Spirits don't get to choose," I continued. "Not really."

Lucy's eyes shone. "Then why are you still here?"

Because of you, I almost said.

Instead—"…Because I'm stubborn."

She let out a shaky laugh.

Then her expression hardened with resolve.

"Then we'll make a contract," she said firmly. "Right now."

My chest twisted.

"…I can't."

Her smile faltered. "Why not?"

"Because I've stayed too long." I met her gaze. "My time is almost up."

Silence fell heavy between us.

"…What does that mean," she whispered.

"It means," I said quietly, "that if I don't return to the Spirit World soon… I'll disappear."

Forever.

Lucy POV

"No," she said instantly.

The word tore out of her.

"That's— there has to be another way!"

Loke knelt in front of her, suddenly very serious.

"There is," he said. "But it's dangerous."

"I don't care."

"Lucy—"

"If you think I'm letting you vanish after telling me this," she snapped, tears spilling over, "you're an idiot."

He laughed weakly. "You really are like that, huh."

She grabbed his collar.

"You helped me when I was scared. You fought beside us. You belong here."

Her voice broke.

"You belong with us."

Loke closed his eyes.

For the first time in years—

someone had chosen him back.

---

They went to the Celestial Spirit King's Gate at dawn.

Lucy's hands shook as she raised her keys.

"Please," she whispered. "Let him stay."

The air roared.

The world bent.

The Celestial Spirit King appeared—vast, ancient, terrifying.

And he looked at Loke.

"You have overstayed," the King said.

"I know," Loke replied, head bowed.

"You broke sacred law."

"I accept the punishment."

Lucy stepped forward.

"Then punish me too," she said fiercely. "I'm his mage now."

The King studied her.

"…You would bind yourself to one who chose exile?"

Lucy didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

"…Very well."

Light exploded.

---

Loke POV

Pain tore through me.

Then—

warmth.

A contract.

Lucy collapsed forward, exhausted, but smiling through tears.

"…You're not going anywhere," she whispered.

I laughed—really laughed—as I caught her.

"Looks like," I said softly, "I finally found a home."

---

Later, back at the guild, Lucy slept through an entire afternoon.

Ren passed by, glanced at Loke—and paused.

"…You okay?" he asked quietly.

Loke nodded.

"…Thanks," he said. "For watching over her."

Ren smiled faintly. "That's her strength."

Across the room, Erza and Mira watched Lucy breathe steadily in sleep.

Fairy Tail remained loud. Messy. Alive.

And one lion spirit—

for the first time—

belonged.
