Erza Scarlet — 14

Mira Jane Strauss — 14

Laxus Dreyar — 15

---

The sea wind carried salt and tension in equal measure.

Ren stood at the edge of the ship, bare feet planted firmly against the wooden deck as Tenrou Island slowly came into view—ancient trees rising like silent judges, the land itself humming with old magic.

So this is it…

The S-Class Mage Promotion Trial.

Behind him, the Fairy Tail guild buzzed louder than the waves.

"I'm telling you, Laxus is gonna blast the island in half," Natsu said confidently.

"Hey!" Laxus snapped, sparks crackling around him. "I'll only destroy what gets in my way."

Erza stood calm and straight, armor gleaming even under the sun. Her expression was unreadable—but Ren could sense the focus burning beneath it.

Mira leaned against the railing, arms folded, hair tied back. She smiled, but her eyes were sharp. She's changed, Ren thought. Still loud… but steadier.

And then there was him.

Ren inhaled slowly.

Sun Breathing — Total Concentration.

Warmth spread through his lungs, his blood, his bones. No Moon. No duality. Just the Sun—pure, radiant, relentless.

Only Sun Breathing, he reminded himself. No matter what.

Makarov's voice boomed across the deck.

"The candidates for this year's S-Class Trial are—Laxus Dreyar! Erza Scarlet! Mira Jane Strauss! And Ren!"

Cheers erupted.

Ren scratched his cheek awkwardly. "That's… still weird to hear."

Mira grinned. "Get used to it, Sunshine."

Erza glanced at him. "Don't hold back."

Ren smiled softly. "I wouldn't dare."

Phase One — The Hunt

The rules were simple. Brutal.

Each candidate was assigned a trial monster—ancient, dangerous, and placed deep within Tenrou's forest. Defeat it alone. No help.

Ren stepped into the forest, sunlight filtering through thick leaves. The air felt… heavy.

Old magic, he thought. This place remembers things.

A low growl echoed.

From the shadows emerged a massive beast—stone-plated hide, glowing eyes, claws like axes. Each step cracked the earth.

Ren exhaled.

"Alright," he said quietly. "Let's do this clean."

He drew his sword.

The moment his feet moved—

Sun Breathing, First Form: Dawn Slash.

Light curved through the air. The beast roared, charging.

Ren didn't retreat.

Second Form: Rising Sun Wheel.

His blade spun, heat flaring, carving through stone armor like it was wax.

The beast struck back—claws tearing trees apart—but Ren flowed, breath steady, movements precise.

No panic. No rush.

Fourth Form: Blazing Bone.

The ground scorched beneath his feet as he drove forward, blade piercing deep. The beast collapsed with a thunderous crash.

Silence.

Ren stood still, chest rising slowly.

Controlled. Focused.

That's the Sun.

Phase Two — The Confrontation

By sunset, the candidates were summoned to the clearing.

Laxus stood smug and uninjured, lightning still crackling faintly around him.

Mira had a torn sleeve—and a wild grin.

Erza bore scratches, armor damaged, but her gaze was sharp as ever.

Makarov nodded. "Good. Now comes the real test."

The ground shifted.

Four massive magic circles flared to life.

"Phase Two," Makarov continued. "You fight each other."

The air changed instantly.

Laxus laughed. "Finally."

Erza stepped forward. "No alliances."

Mira cracked her neck. "Obviously."

Ren closed his eyes for a brief moment.

Sun only.

The signal dropped.

Laxus moved first—lightning exploding outward.

Erza Requipped mid-charge, blades flashing.

Mira inhaled sharply.

Beast Breathing — Third Form: Savage Leap.

Ren stepped forward—not away.

Sun Breathing, Fifth Form: Solar Thrust.

His blade met lightning head-on—heat and light dispersing the charge.

Laxus skidded back, eyes widening. "Tch—still annoying."

Erza engaged Mira, steel clashing against feral strength.

Ren watched carefully.

No interference. Pick your moment.

Laxus charged again.

Ren met him head-on, feet burning against the earth.

Sun Breathing, Sixth Form: Radiant Arc.

A crescent of light exploded outward.

Laxus was thrown back—hard—skidding to a stop.

Silence fell.

Erza froze mid-swing.

Mira stared.

"…You're stronger," Mira muttered.

Ren exhaled, sword lowering. "So are you."

Laxus pushed himself up, grinning despite the dirt on his face.

"Damn it… you're fun."

Judgment

Night had fallen when Makarov stepped forward.

"The results are clear."

The candidates stood tall.

"Erza Scarlet. Passed."

Erza bowed, relief flickering briefly across her face.

"Laxus Dreyar. Passed."

Laxus smirked. "Obviously."

Makarov turned to Mira.

"Mira Jane Strauss…"

A pause.

"…you showed immense potential—but lack control. Not yet."

Mira clenched her fists—but nodded. "I understand."

Finally, Makarov faced Ren.

"Ren… your power is refined. Your control exceptional. And your restraint admirable."

Ren held his breath.

"You pass."

The guild erupted.

Ren blinked—then laughed softly. "Guess… the Sun was enough."

Erza stepped beside him. "It always is."

Mira smiled—genuine, proud. "Next time, I'm passing too."

Ren looked at them—his family, his rivals, his bonds.

Fourteen years old… and already here.

Above Tenrou Island, the moon rose quietly—but Ren's path was clear.

The Sun would guide him.
