Chapter 47 - Away

We walk toward my cabin, everyone tired but satisfied from the dungeon exploration.

As we approach, I see Yuki sitting on the porch steps. Donny is beside her, and there are two other creatures I don't recognize.

One is a small fox-like monster with sleek black fur that shimmers with purple undertones. A brilliant blue gem sits embedded in its forehead, glowing softly. It's curled up in Yuki's lap, about the size of a house cat.

The other is a bee. Much larger than normal, roughly the size of a fist. Its body is pale blue, almost like ice, and its wings create faint frost patterns in the air as it hovers near Yuki's shoulder.

Is that a carbuncle? And a blue bee?

Yuki spots us and waves excitedly. She picks up the carbuncle and runs toward us, the bee following close behind.

[Yuki] "Wright! Everyone! You're back!"

The carbuncle in her arms spots me and immediately starts squirming, trying to escape. The bee darts behind Yuki's head, peeking out nervously.

[Yuki] "I was able to make friends with two monsters! This is a Shadow Carbuncle, and this is a Frost Bee Queen!"

---

[Appraisal]

Shadow Carbuncle

Small fox-like magical creature native to deep forests. The gem on its forehead stores and channels dark-aspected energy. Can manipulate shadows for camouflage and short-range teleportation. Highly intelligent and cautious by nature. Gemstone grows larger and more powerful as the creature matures.

[Appraisal]

Frost Bee Queen

Insectoid creature that thrives in forest environments. Capable of launching ice shards as a defensive measure. Highly social within its hive but wary of outsiders.

---

The Shadow Carbuncle is still struggling in Yuki's arms, its eyes locked on me. The Frost Bee has completely hidden behind Yuki now, only its antennae visible.

I don't bite.

[Yuki] "Calm down, both of you! Wright may look scary, but he won't hurt you!"

Donny churrs in agreement.

Ouch. That hurts, Yuki. I'm not scary.

And Donny, are you agreeing that I won't hurt them, or that I'm scary?

I crouch down to be less intimidating and speak gently.

[Wright] "Hello. My name is Wright. Welcome to the village."

[Yuki] "This child's name is Umbra and the one behind me is Snow."

Umbra stops struggling but remains tense in Yuki's arms. Snow peeks out a little more but doesn't come any closer.

Still wary, but at least they're not panicking anymore.

[Yuki] "So how did the ruins exploration go?"

[Wright] "We found a dungeon. But let's head to the high elves first. We should tell everyone about the details together. Plus, it's almost dinner time."

[Yuki] "A dungeon?! That's amazing! I want to hear everything!"

[Wright] "You will. Let's go."

We make our way toward the barracks area. As we approach, I notice significant changes since we left.

One of the barrack buildings has been torn down. In its place, construction is underway on what looks like a winery. Stone foundations have been laid, wooden frames are being erected, and large wooden barrels are stacked nearby.

The vampires are working. Some hauling materials, others carefully assembling the structure. They move with grace and precision, making the construction look almost elegant.

Seraphina spots us and waves, walking over with a smile.

[Seraphina] "My dear Wright! How wonderful to see you returned safely! Was your expedition fruitful?"

[Wright] "We're back. It went well. Is there anything you need for the winery?"

[Seraphina] "How gracious of you to ask! Everything is proceeding magnificently. We've repurposed the materials from the barracks, and Kara has been absolutely invaluable in designing the structure. Her craftsmanship is exquisite!"

She gestures toward the construction.

[Wright] "Are all the vampires taking residence in the barracks now?"

[Seraphina] "For the time being, yes. We shall construct our permanent dwellings once the winery is complete. One must have priorities, after all, and what could be more essential than proper wine-making facilities?"

Well, to each their own.

[Wright] "Do you happen to know where Liora is?"

[Seraphina] "Of course! Allow me to escort you to her residence."

She leads us away from the barracks and toward the tree houses.

As we approach, I realize I haven't actually seen the high elf village properly yet now that it's finished. I'm excited to see how it turned out.

Wooden spiral staircases wrap around massive tree trunks, ascending into the branches. Walkways connect multiple trees at various heights, creating a network of paths that weave through the forest. Some walkways are simple wooden planks with rope railings. Others are more elaborate, with carved handrails and decorative elements that seem to grow naturally from the wood.

The houses are built into and around the trees, using the natural shape of the branches and trunks as part of the structure. They blend perfectly with their surroundings. Windows glow with warm light, and smoke rises from chimneys that emerge from the canopy.

Rope bridges connect some of the higher platforms, swaying gently in the evening breeze. Lanterns hang from posts along the walkways, already lit as the sun begins to set, casting a soft golden glow across everything.

The entire village surrounds the farm fields, positioned so the high elves have a perfect view of the crops from their elevated homes.

[Takeshi] "This is incredible!"

[Aiko] "It's like a fairy tale!"

[Yuki] "It looks like something straight out of a manga!"

The angels are looking around, nodding to themselves. Even Lucien seems impressed, his gaze moving from structure to structure.

Seraphina leads us to one of the larger trees. A spiral staircase wraps around its trunk, beautifully crafted with smooth handrails. We begin to climb.

As we ascend, I can see more of the village layout. There are at least twenty houses visible from here, maybe more hidden deeper in the forest. Children are playing on some of the lower walkways, their laughter echoing through the trees. Everyone move along the paths with practiced ease, some carrying baskets, others simply enjoying the evening air.

We pass several houses on our way up. Each one is unique. Different sizes, different designs, but all maintaining that organic, natural aesthetic. Some have small gardens on their platforms, flowers and herbs growing in wooden boxes. Others have wind chimes that create gentle music as the breeze passes through.

One house we pass has a balcony with chairs and a small table, where an elderly couple sits drinking tea and watching the sunset. They wave as we pass, and we wave back.

The staircase continues upward, and we cross two rope bridges to reach another tree. The walkway here is wider, more stable, and leads to a house that sits in a particularly large branch fork.

The house is modest in size but beautifully constructed. Natural wood forms the walls, and the roof is covered in what looks like living moss and small flowering vines. A carved wooden door serves as the entrance, with delicate leaf patterns etched into the surface.

Windows on either side of the door are open, curtains billowing gently in the breeze. I can see warm light inside and smell something cooking. Herbs and bread, maybe.

Seraphina knocks on the door.

[Seraphina] "Liora? You have visitors."

The door opens, and Liora appears. Her eyes widen in surprise at seeing so many people.

[Liora] "Oh! I wasn't expecting—please, come in!"

She steps aside to let us enter.

The main room is open, with wooden floors polished smooth. The walls are the same natural wood as the exterior, but inside they're decorated with woven tapestries depicting forest scenes and interlocking shapes. Shelves line one wall, filled with books, small potted plants, and various personal items.

A low wooden table sits in the center of the living area, surrounded by cushions on the floor for seating. The table looks handmade, with distinctive grain throughout.

The kitchen area is visible through an archway. Wooden counters, shelves of dishes, and a small stove that appears to be enchanted to produce heat without smoke.

Large windows let in natural light, and the view overlooks the farm fields below. I can see our crops growing, the newly planted rows stretching out in neat lines.

There's a small bedroom area partially visible through another doorway, and what might be a study or workspace beyond that.

Everything has a natural, organic feel. Nothing synthetic or out of place. Even the cushions look like they're made from plant fibers and stuffed with dried moss or similar materials.

It's comfortable, lived-in, but not cluttered. A perfect reflection of Liora herself.

[Liora] "Please, sit! I apologize for the lack of chairs. Make yourselves comfortable around the table."

We settle around the low table, sitting on the cushions. It's a bit cramped with so many people, but we manage. Umbra has finally relaxed enough that Yuki sets him down, though it stays close to her. Snow perches on her shoulder, still eyeing me warily.

Donny makes himself comfortable near the window, looking out at the fields.

[Liora] "So, how did the ruins exploration go?"

[Wright] "We found a dungeon."

[Liora] "A dungeon? Ah, Feyfall Dungeon. I wondered if that's what you meant?"

Everyone looks at her.

[Wright] "You knew about it?"

[Liora] "Of course. The high elves have known about that dungeon for quite some time. We use it as a training ground for our younger members."

[Takeshi] "Wait, you knew and didn't say anything?"

[Liora] "You said you were exploring ruins. I assumed you meant the other historical sites in the area. Feyfall is a dungeon, not ruins, so I didn't make the connection."

We did say ruins, not dungeon.

[Lucien] "How far have the high elves explored?"

[Liora] "The fourth floor is our current limit. We have no way to cross the waters safely, and fighting sea monsters is extremely dangerous."

[Wright] "That's exactly where we stopped too."

Lucien's stomach growls loudly.

Everyone looks at him. He clears his throat, looking away.

[Wright] "It is getting late."

I turn to Liora.

[Wright] "Do you mind if we all eat here? I can help you cook."

[Liora] "I'd be happy to make something for everyone! Though with this many people, I'll definitely appreciate the help."

[Wright] "Let's get started then."

We stand and make our way to the kitchen area, ready to prepare dinner for our impromptu gathering.
