Chapter 1 - my sister's heart

# My Sister's Heart

Salma was lying on the hospital bed, her eyes fixed vacantly on the ceiling. Around her, tubes and wires were strung out like the tentacles of an invisible octopus. Her sick heart was beating feebly, as if every heartbeat was the last one.

"You have to stay strong, Salma. There is hope," said the doctor reassuringly but with a sense of concern etched in his eyes. "We've identified a compatible donor for your son. The surgery will happen tomorrow."

Salma smiled faintly. At last, she will have a new heart. A heart which will give her a new life, away from the pain that had been accompanying her all along all these years.

She was unable to sleep that night. She remembered everything. She remembered her childhood and her unfulfilled dreams. She remembered her sister Nora.

Nora. The mere mention of it was enough to spark Salma's rage. Her sister who was always the best at everything, the smartest and most beautiful. Her sister who took up all of their parents' affection while she was living in the shadows. Nora did everything well while Salma was struggling. When Salma was in need, Nora was living her flawless life. Or so Salma thought.

"I hate her," Salma whispered into the darkness. "I hate everything about her."

Three days have passed since the surgery, and Salma is now recovering slowly. She is feeling the pulsing of the new heart in her body. She is feeling life in her veins for the first time in years.

Her mother was sitting with her, her face pale and her eyes reddened from crying.

"Mom, why are you crying? The surgery was successful. I'm fine now," Salma said weakly.

Her mother's broken gaze locked on hers before she clutched her hand in a tight grip.

"Salma. my love. I have to tell you something."

"What is it?"

"The donor…the heart you're currently carrying…"

The mother took a shuddering breath. "The donor…"

"Yes

"It's Nora's heart

Time stood still. Salma felt the whole world turning around her.

"What…what are you saying?"

"Nora, on the other hand, had been dealing with issues of a brain tumor for the past six months. Nora didn't want to worry you about this when you were in such condition. After realizing she wouldn't live long, Nora registered as an organ donor. Nora ensured that she and you have the same blood types."

Salma's tears cascaded like a waterfall.

"No. it can't be."

"She loved you, Salma. She loved you more than anything in the world. The whole time that you believed she was ignoring you, she had two jobs to pay for your treatment. All of the successes in her life were for you to give you a better life,"

The mother took an envelope from her bag and passed it to Salma with shaking hands.

"She has left you this letter."

With trembling fingers, Salma opened the envelope. Nora's familiar handwriting spilled onto the page:

"Dearest Sal

If you are reading this letter, that means that everything went well. Now you are carrying my heart in yours, and that makes me very happy. Even though you felt that I did not care for you, the truth of the matter is that I did not know how to show you that I was in love with you.

Don't grieve for me. I'm happy that I can give you this final gift. Live your life, my little sister. Live it for me and for yourself. Love, laugh, and dream.

Your heart is now where mine beats. That is why I'll always be with you.

I love you more than you can possibly imagine,

Nora"

Salma collapsed in totality. She screamed in pain, which was not physical, but emotional pain. All those years of hatred, of misunderstandings, of the resentment that had dwelled in her heart—and that heart now contained the heart of her loved sister.

"I'm. sorry. Nora, I'm so sorry." Salma cried, reaching out a shaking hand and placing it upon her chest as she felt the pounding rhythm of her sister's heart.

But this apology was too late. Nora was not there to respond to this sentiment of apologies.

Salma placed the letter on her heart—Nora's heart—and promised to live every day of her life from then on as if she were living in memory of her sister. To be a better person, to love more, to not let misunderstanding and pride tear down precious or wonderful relationships.

But regret, which was a weighted sense residing within her soul, would remain with her eternally—a beat within her chest that reminded her of what she had lost while still having the opportunity.

Nora's heart pulsates within her breast, propelling her towards life. And Nora's spirit takes off into the distance.

this teaches us a lesson...how cruel it is for a person to love after its over.

cherish your family, cherish yourself and be thankful to god for all what you have, for some people dont have even have eyes to see a beautiful flower.
