Chapter 22 - The Echoes of The Past

The interview date arrived sooner than Meera had expected.

The email landed in her inbox late at night, the words sharp and clear this time—no ambiguity, no waiting.

Interview Scheduled: Monday, 10:00 AM.

Her heart raced as she read it twice, then a third time, just to be sure it was real.

This was it.

The phase that would decide whether her dream moved forward—or stopped right here.

She closed her laptop and leaned back in her chair, staring at the quiet room. For a moment, excitement won. Then fear followed close behind, curling quietly around her confidence.

What if she messed it up?

What if she wasn't good enough after all?

She picked up her phone instinctively, thumb hovering over Aarav's name. Then she paused.

She didn't call him.

Not because she didn't want to—but because she wanted to face this moment on her own first.

Aarav, on the other hand, sensed something before she told him.

He noticed the way her replies had become shorter.

The way her smile looked a little tighter.

"You got the interview, didn't you?" he asked when they met the next evening.

Meera looked at him, surprised. "How do you always know?"

He shrugged lightly. "You go quiet when something important is coming."

She smiled, then nodded. "Monday."

"That's amazing," he said instantly. "You'll do great."

She tried to smile back, but the nervousness slipped through. "What if I don't?"

Aarav didn't rush to reassure her. Instead, he said calmly, "Then it won't define you. But if you do… it might change a lot of things."

She looked at him carefully. "Including us?"

The question was soft, but heavy.

Aarav met her gaze. "Only if we let it."

That same night, Aarav received a call he hadn't expected.

The name on his screen made his jaw tighten.

Riya.

Someone he hadn't spoken to in over a year.

He let the phone ring for a few seconds before answering.

"Hey," she said, her voice familiar in a way that made memories stir uncomfortably. "I heard you're back in town."

"I never left," Aarav replied.

A brief laugh from her end. "Still the same."

"Why are you calling, Riya?" he asked, not unkindly—just direct.

"I just… wanted to meet. Talk. Clear some things."

Aarav leaned back, closing his eyes for a second. Riya wasn't just an ex. She was a chapter of his life filled with misunderstandings, expectations, and emotional exhaustion.

"I'm seeing someone," he said finally.

There was a pause.

"Is she serious?" Riya asked.

"Yes," Aarav replied without hesitation.

Another silence. Then, "I'm happy for you," she said—though it didn't sound entirely convincing. "Still… one coffee shouldn't hurt, right?"

Aarav didn't answer immediately.

The next day, Meera found out—accidentally.

They were sitting together when Aarav's phone buzzed on the table. A message preview flashed on the screen.

Riya: "Tomorrow at 5 then?"

Meera didn't mean to read it.

But she did.

Her chest tightened—not because of jealousy, but because of surprise.

She looked at Aarav. "Who's Riya?"

Aarav froze for half a second. Then he picked up the phone and locked the screen.

"My past," he said honestly.

Something about that word—past—felt heavier than it should have.

"You're meeting her?" Meera asked, keeping her voice steady.

"Yes," he admitted. "Just to talk. To close things properly."

Meera nodded slowly. She wanted to say she was fine with it.

She wanted to be mature, understanding.

But there was a strange ache in her chest.

"I didn't know," she said quietly.

"I was going to tell you," Aarav replied. "I just didn't want to stress you before your interview."

Her eyes softened, but the distance crept in anyway. "Sometimes not telling is more stressful than telling."

Aarav knew she was right.

That night, Meera couldn't focus on her interview prep.

Her mind kept drifting—not to Riya herself, but to the thought that there were parts of Aarav's life she had never seen. Parts shaped before her, without her.

She reminded herself: Everyone has a past.

Still, the thought echoed.

Trust wasn't about knowing everything.

It was about believing even when you didn't.

And that belief was being tested—quietly, gently, but undeniably.

Monday morning arrived.

Meera stood outside the interview building, her file clutched tightly in her hands, heart pounding. Somewhere across the city, Aarav was sitting at a café, waiting for Riya.

Two different moments.

Two different tests.

Neither of them knew what the day would take from them—or give back.

But one thing was certain:

By the time the sun set, something between them would shift.

Whether closer…

or further apart.
