Chapter 29 - The Truth That Breaks the Curse

The silence after Kael's last words felt heavier than any battle.

Luna stood in front of him, heart pounding, every nerve alive with unspoken emotion and unseen danger. Somewhere beyond the fortress walls, something was watching her — patiently, possessively — and she hated how real it felt.

"I don't like being afraid of something I can't see," Luna said quietly.

Kael's jaw tightened. "Neither do I."

The bond between them pulsed, not violently, not painfully — but with urgency. Like a warning. Like a countdown.

Before either of them could speak again, the fortress shook.

Not violently — not enough to collapse — but enough for the stone beneath their feet to groan like something ancient had stirred beneath the world itself.

Luna grabbed Kael's arm. "That wasn't an earthquake."

"No," Kael said. "That was a summons."

The torches lining the hallway flared bright blue — witchfire.

Seren appeared at the far end of the corridor, breathless. "She's here."

Kael's eyes darkened. "The Witch Queen."

Rowan joined them seconds later, sword already in hand. "She breached the outer wards. Not through force. Through the bond."

Luna's chest tightened. "She followed me."

"Yes," Kael said. "And she's no longer hiding."

The throne hall doors slammed open on their own.

Cold poured inside.

Not winter cold — something deeper. Older.

A cold that carried grief, rage, and regret all at once.

Luna stepped forward before anyone could stop her.

The Witch Queen stood in the center of the hall, her long dark robes trailing like shadows behind her. Her crown of twisted silver thorns glowed faintly, and her eyes — ancient, broken — fixed on Luna immediately.

"You feel it now," the Witch Queen said softly. "Don't you, little star?"

Luna froze.

Kael stiffened. "Do not call her that."

The Witch Queen's gaze flicked to him,

sharp and cold. "You've always been so protective of what you think is yours."

Luna's breath hitched. "You said that before."

"Yes," the Witch Queen said. "And you didn't understand it then. But now you're starting to."

Kael stepped in front of Luna. "Speak clearly. Or leave."

The Witch Queen smiled faintly. "Oh, I will.

Because your time is almost over."

Luna's heart pounded. "Over… for what?"

"For lies," the Witch Queen replied. "For misunderstandings. For curses built on grief instead of truth."

Kael's fists clenched. "Then speak the truth."

The Witch Queen turned her full attention to Luna. "You want to know why your bond exists."

Luna nodded.

"You want to know why fate keeps pulling you toward him."

"Yes."

"You want to know why your heart has always felt like it was waiting for something."

Her chest tightened. "Yes."

The Witch Queen exhaled slowly. "Then listen carefully."

The air in the hall shifted.

The world… folded.

Suddenly, Luna wasn't standing in the fortress.

She was standing in a memory.

A different world.

A different time.

Moonlight filtered through silver trees. The air shimmered with magic. And in the center of a glowing clearing stood a woman — young, radiant, and heartbreakingly human.

"She was my daughter," the Witch Queen's voice echoed.

Luna's breath caught.

"She was a witch. Powerful. Gentle.

Stubborn. And she loved a vampire."

Luna turned.

She saw him.

Not Kael — but someone who looked heartbreakingly similar.

Same eyes.

Same darkness.

Same loneliness.

"He was not a lord yet," the Witch Queen continued. "He was just a boy who believed love could save him."

Kael stiffened beside Luna, eyes locked on the vision.

"And she believed love could save him," the Witch Queen whispered.

The memory shifted.

The young witch stood in the rain, blood on her hands, tears streaming down her face.

"They tried to stop her," the Witch Queen said. "The covens. The council. Even I did."

Luna's chest tightened. "Why?"

"Because loving a vampire meant

abandoning her destiny," the Witch Queen said. "It meant giving up her throne. Her legacy. Her future."

The young witch looked at the vampire boy and said something Luna couldn't hear — but felt.

I choose you.

The memory shattered.

They stood again in the throne hall.

The Witch Queen's eyes shimmered — not with rage — but with grief.

"She died because of that choice," the Witch Queen said. "Hunted. Betrayed. Executed."

Luna felt sick. "And him?"

"He survived," the Witch Queen said.

"Broken. Alone. Cursed by grief."

Kael's voice was barely audible. "That wasn't me."

"No," the Witch Queen said softly. "But it was your blood. Your ancestor. Your past."

Kael's hands trembled.

"And when she died," the Witch Queen continued, "something inside me broke as well."

Luna's heart ached. "You created the curse."

"Yes," the Witch Queen said. "Not out of cruelty. Out of despair."

She lifted her hand, and the air shimmered.

"I bound their souls across time," she said.

"So that one day, they would find each other again."

Luna's breath caught. "Us."

"Yes," the Witch Queen said. "Not you as copies. But you as echoes."

Kael's voice cracked. "You trapped us."

"I gave you a second chance," the Witch Queen replied. "To succeed where they failed."

Luna shook her head. "But you didn't give us a choice."

"No," the Witch Queen admitted. "And that was my sin."

Silence fell heavy.

"You didn't bind us out of love," Luna said.

"You bound us out of grief."

"Yes," the Witch Queen whispered.

"And grief doesn't get to decide our future."

The Witch Queen looked at Luna — truly looked at her — and something in her eyes shifted.

"You're stronger than she was," the Witch Queen said quietly.

"Because I'm not ruled by destiny," Luna replied. "I'm ruled by choice."

Kael turned to her, breath uneven. "Luna…"

She took his hand.

Not because of the bond.

Not because of fate.

Because she chose to.

"I don't love you because of a curse," she said softly. "I love you because you stay.

Because you listen. Because you fight for me — not over me."

The Witch Queen's breath shuddered.

"You love him," she said.

"Yes," Luna said. "And he loves me."

Kael's voice was low. "I do."

The Witch Queen closed her eyes.

And for the first time since she had entered the hall, she looked… tired.

"I waited centuries for this moment," she whispered. "Not for revenge. Not for control."

She opened her eyes again.

"For release."

The crown on her head began to crack.

Light spilled through the silver thorns.

The air shook.

"What are you doing?" Rowan demanded.

"Ending it," the Witch Queen replied. "The curse cannot be broken by battle. It can only be broken by truth… and choice."

She lifted her hands.

The bond between Luna and Kael flared — bright, warm, painful — and then… began to unravel.

Luna gasped.

Not in pain.

In fear.

"Kael—"

He gripped her hand tighter. "I'm here."

The magic pulsed once more — and then… stilled.

The invisible chain that had once bound their souls across time dissolved.

The hall went silent.

The Witch Queen staggered.

Seren rushed forward — but Luna stepped ahead first.

"Are you dying?" Luna asked.

The Witch Queen smiled faintly. "No. But I am no longer what I was."

The silver thorns shattered into light.

Her crown vanished.

Her power dimmed.

"What happens now?" Luna asked.

"Now," the Witch Queen said softly, "you live without chains."

Kael stared at Luna. "Do you still feel it?"

She closed her eyes.

Searched.

The bond was… quiet.

Not gone.

But no longer binding.

No longer forced.

Just a connection — warm, willing, alive.

"Yes," she said. "But it feels… different."

Kael exhaled. "Good."

The Witch Queen took a step back.

"My curse is broken," she said. "But something else has already claimed its place."

Luna's heart dropped. "The shadow."

"Yes," the Witch Queen said. "He has been watching longer than you realize."

Kael's eyes darkened. "You know him."

"I know of him," the Witch Queen replied.

"And you should be afraid."

Luna straightened. "I'm not afraid of him."

"You should be," the Witch Queen said quietly. "Because he does not want your soul."

Luna's chest tightened. "Then what does he want?"

The Witch Queen looked directly at her.

"He wants your heart."

Silence shattered the hall.

Kael's jaw clenched.

"He cannot have it," he said.

The Witch Queen turned to him. "That depends on her."

Luna's voice was steady. "My heart is not a prize."

The Witch Queen's lips curved faintly. "Then you are already stronger than destiny."

She stepped back — and the air rippled.

"I have done what I came to do," she said.

"The curse is broken. The cycle is ended."

Her gaze lingered on Luna.

"But not all bonds are forged by grief," she added. "Some are forged by longing."

Then she vanished.

The hall felt… lighter.

Quieter.

But not safer.

Kael turned to Luna immediately. "Are you okay?"

She nodded slowly. "I feel… free."

He searched her face. "Free from the

curse?"

"Yes," she said. "But not free from what's coming."

His eyes darkened. "We'll face it together."

She met his gaze. "Not because of fate."

"Because of choice," he said.

Her lips curved faintly. "Exactly."

But somewhere beyond realms — beyond shadows — something stirred.

Not in anger.

Not in rage.

In anticipation.

And for the first time…

It felt ready.
