Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 — The Hunter’s Shadow

The system message faded slowly.

But the tension it left behind didn't.

Eight.

Somewhere in the ruins of Tokyo, one of the nine chosen subjects had already died.

No one spoke for a moment.

The dead Alpha monster lay twisted across the street, its black blood slowly creeping through cracks in the asphalt.

Ash drifted down from the smoky sky like silent snow.

Ren broke the silence first.

"…So someone just died."

His voice sounded quieter than usual.

Akira nodded.

"Yeah."

Rei looked around the street carefully.

"Which means someone else killed them."

Mira leaned against the broken convenience store wall again, arms crossed.

"Or a monster did."

Ryu shook his head slowly.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

His eyes were focused on the ground near the Alpha monster's body.

"Subjects."

He tapped the hammer against the pavement once.

"Monsters don't trigger elimination announcements."

The air suddenly felt colder.

Ren rubbed his arms.

"Great."

He forced a weak laugh.

"So we're in some kind of deadly survival tournament."

Akira shrugged.

"That's one way to put it."

I stared at the fading system text still lingering faintly in my vision.

If the system announced a subject's death…

That meant it was watching everything.

Every fight.

Every decision.

Every mistake.

And that thought sent a chill down my spine.

Another message blinked into existence.

TRIAL STATUS UPDATE

SUBJECT 16 — ACTIVE

TIME REMAINING: 21:42:11

The timer kept moving.

The trial wasn't even halfway finished.

Rei stepped toward the convenience store entrance and looked inside.

"We should gather the supplies before more monsters show up."

Mira nodded.

"That's what we were doing before you arrived."

Ren peeked inside behind her.

The small store was a mess.

Shelves were knocked over.

Glass covered the floor.

But a few backpacks filled with supplies sat near the counter.

"Food," Ren said, lifting one.

"And bottled water."

Akira grabbed another bag and tossed it casually over his shoulder.

"Nice."

Ryu remained outside.

Watching the street.

Watching everything.

His silence was heavier than the hammer he carried.

Rei noticed.

"You think something else is coming."

Ryu didn't look at her.

"Yes."

His answer was simple.

Certain.

That made my instincts tighten.

The city was too quiet again.

Not peaceful quiet.

The kind of quiet that comes right before something terrible happens.

Akira stepped outside again, chewing on a protein bar he had grabbed from the store.

"So what's the plan now, Subject 16?"

Ren looked at me.

Rei looked at me.

Even Mira glanced over.

I frowned.

"Why are you all looking at me?"

Akira grinned.

"You killed the Alpha monster's balance point."

"What?"

"The strike that stunned it," he said. "You created the opening."

Mira nodded slightly.

"He's right."

Rei added calmly,

"You also reacted fastest during the café attack."

Ren pointed at me.

"And you've got the system messages first."

I rubbed my temple.

"…Great."

The responsibility felt heavy.

But I understood something now.

We weren't just surviving.

We were adapting.

And the faster we learned the system…

The better our chances.

"We move," I said.

Akira raised an eyebrow.

"Where?"

I glanced toward the smoky skyline.

"The resource node wasn't the only marker."

The map in my vision flickered again.

Several red points still blinked across nearby districts.

One marker pulsed brighter than the others.

EVENT SIGNAL DETECTED

Distance: 1.2 km.

Akira whistled.

"Oh?"

"You can see event markers too?"

I nodded.

Rei frowned.

"What kind of event?"

I read the message again.

Then answered.

"Unknown."

Ren groaned.

"That's comforting."

But before anyone could say more—

Ryu suddenly lifted his hammer.

"Quiet."

Everyone froze.

A faint sound echoed from the far end of the street.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

A lone figure stepped through the drifting smoke.

Tall.

Thin.

Wearing a long dark coat.

His face was partially hidden under the shadow of the hood.

But something about the way he walked felt wrong.

Too calm.

Too controlled.

The system message appeared instantly.

SUBJECT DETECTED — ID: 2

Akira muttered under his breath.

"…Well."

"That's new."

The stranger stopped about thirty meters away.

His head tilted slightly as if studying us.

Then he slowly removed the hood.

A young man.

Sharp features.

Pale skin.

Cold eyes.

He looked completely untouched by the chaos surrounding the city.

His gaze moved across the group one by one.

Mira.

Akira.

Ryu.

Rei.

Ren.

Then finally stopped on me.

The corners of his mouth curved slightly.

"Subject 16."

My stomach dropped.

"You know me?"

The man nodded once.

"I know of you."

Ryu's grip tightened on his hammer.

"You killed the subject."

The stranger didn't deny it.

He didn't even react.

Instead he spoke calmly.

"Yes."

Ren whispered,

"…This guy's insane."

Akira twirled his spear once.

"So you're the hunter."

The man's expression remained calm.

"I prefer the term efficient."

Rei stepped closer to me.

"Why tell us?"

The stranger looked around the ruined street.

"At some point we would meet."

He folded his hands behind his back.

"And I was curious."

"About what?" I asked.

His eyes sharpened.

"The one the system marked first."

My heartbeat slowed.

"Subject 16."

The man smiled faintly.

"I wanted to see if you were worth the attention."

Ryu stepped forward.

Hammer raised.

"You won't leave here."

The stranger sighed softly.

"I didn't come here to fight all of you."

Akira smirked.

"Convenient."

The man ignored him.

Instead he looked at me again.

"There will be stronger monsters soon."

"How do you know?" Rei asked.

He pointed at the sky.

Dark clouds had begun forming above the ruined towers of Tokyo.

"The system escalates trials."

Akira nodded slowly.

"…He's not wrong."

The stranger stepped backward.

"My name is Kuro."

His eyes locked onto mine one last time.

"And we will fight eventually."

Then he turned.

And walked back into the smoke.

Ren exhaled slowly.

"…I hate that guy."

Mira watched the direction Kuro disappeared.

"He's dangerous."

Ryu nodded once.

"Yes."

Akira rested the spear across his shoulder again.

"Well."

He looked at me.

"The good news?"

Ren sighed.

"There's good news?"

Akira grinned.

"You're officially the most popular target in the city."

The timer in my vision continued counting down.

21:18:54 REMAINING

And somewhere far across Tokyo…

Thunder rolled again.

Something bigger was waking up.
