Chapter 29 - : The Ones Who Dare to Look Back

The night after the battle did not bring silence.

It brought weight.

The sky above the city remained calm, stars scattered like frozen witnesses, but beneath that calm, the air felt… alert. As if the world itself had opened one eye and was waiting to see what would happen next.

Vicky stood near the open balcony of the temporary residence Kael had arranged for them. The curtains fluttered gently behind him, brushing his shoulders again and again, as if reminding him that he was still here—still breathing, still bound by a fate he didn't fully remember.

Behind him—

"You're thinking too loudly again, Master."

Vicky blinked.

Before he could turn, soft fingers pinched his cheek.

"Ow—Aarna—!"

She leaned into his back, chin resting on his shoulder, silver hair spilling forward like moonlight. Her eyes sparkled with mischief, completely out of place in a city that had just survived chaos.

"You do this," she said casually, squeezing his cheek again, "every time you try to remember something you're not supposed to."

"I wasn't trying to remember anything," Vicky muttered.

"That's what you think," she replied smugly.

Kael, sitting at the table nearby, snorted.

"Is she always like this?"

Luka didn't even look up from cleaning his blade.

"Yes."

Eren, seated cross-legged on the floor with Arelia beside him, added calmly,

"And she gets worse when he's tired."

Arelia nodded seriously. "Much worse."

Aarna gasped, offended. "Traitors. All of you."

She finally released Vicky and spun around dramatically, pointing at them.

"I disappear for centuries and this is the respect I get?"

Vicky sighed, rubbing his cheek.

"…You never disappeared."

Aarna froze.

For just a fraction of a second, something unreadable crossed her face.

Then she smiled again—bright, effortless, safe.

"See? He remembers something after all."

No one laughed this time.

• Somewhere Beyond the World

Far away—so far that distance itself lost meaning—there existed a place untouched by stars.

A vast circular chamber floated in endless darkness, its floor etched with symbols that shifted and rearranged themselves like living thoughts. The air hummed with power—not violent, not loud—but absolute.

The Paradox Council had convened.

Nine figures sat around the ring, each different in form, presence, and aura. Some looked human. Others did not bother with such limitations.

A tall figure with fractured light for a face spoke first.

"The seal has reacted."

Another voice answered, deep and echoing, as if spoken from inside a collapsing universe.

"But it has not weakened."

A woman wrapped in black-gold threads leaned forward, fingers interlaced.

"That is precisely the problem."

Silence followed.

Then—

"We cannot ignore him any longer."

Every gaze shifted.

The speaker was seated slightly apart from the others, hood drawn low. Unlike the rest, their aura was… restrained. Not because it was weak—but because it was being held back.

"The boy called Vicky," the hooded one continued. "His presence is stabilizing events that should not align."

A sharp laugh cut through the chamber.

"So now we fear a sealed existence?" another member scoffed. "How ironic."

The hooded figure lifted their head just enough for a single eye to be visible.

"That 'sealed existence' is the reason this council exists at all."

That shut them up.

Finally, the fractured-light figure spoke again, voice slower now.

"Then it is decided. We will go."

A low murmur spread through the council.

"To observe," the black-gold woman clarified. "Not to interfere."

"For now," someone added.

The hooded figure leaned back.

"And pray that observation remains enough."

• Back in the City

Morning arrived quietly.

Markets reopened. Streets filled again. Fear didn't vanish—but it learned how to walk beside routine.

Vicky and the others moved through the city together, not as warriors, not as legends—just people blending into motion.

Kael negotiated supplies.

Eren listened more than he spoke.

Arelia argued with vendors.

Luka remained alert, eyes constantly scanning.

And Aarna?

She held Vicky's sleeve.

Not his hand.

His sleeve.

"So you don't disappear," she said seriously.

"I wasn't planning to," he replied.

"That's what everyone says."

She tightened her grip.

Vicky didn't pull away.

At one corner of the city, they passed a group of adventurers whispering among themselves.

"…they say the seal reacted."

"…Paradox-level entities don't move without reason…"

"…someone important must be near."

Luka slowed.

Vicky didn't.

But Aarna glanced back, eyes briefly glowing with something sharp.

Then it was gone.

• Later That Night

They gathered again under lantern light.

The mood was lighter than it should have been.

Arelia teased Luka.

Kael told an exaggerated story.

Eren smiled faintly.

Aarna sat beside Vicky, legs pulled up, humming softly.

"You're unusually quiet," Vicky said.

She looked at him, tilting her head.

"I'm enjoying this version of you."

"This version?"

"The one who hasn't remembered yet."

He frowned. "That doesn't sound reassuring."

She smiled gently.

"It is."

Her head slowly rested against his shoulder.

No dramatic music.

No visions.

No cracks in seals.

Just warmth.

But far above the city, unseen—

Reality folded.

Something watched.

And somewhere beyond time, a decision finished forming.
