Chapter 41 - I Might Say Something Stupid.

While Kristen fumed in anger about the utter disrespect shown to that poor feather of hers, the man, oblivious to literally everything that was going on just walked back to his station without a care in the world.

A murderous expression took over Kristens face like a storm, thunderous and ready to cause some damage.

But before she had the chance to have her sweet revenge she was knocked back into reality by a pinch from the VERY, VERY moody bird next to her.

"Psssss. Psssss. What do you think you're doing? Hmmmm?" Olivia whispered suspiciously into her mind.

Kristen ever so slowly turned her head away from the direction of the man and replaced her expression with one of innocence.

"Me? Oh, nothing. Yeah, it's pretty calm over here." She smoothly lied.

Olivia studied Kristens face to search for any sign of deception.

A few seconds of silence passed before Lucia snapped them out of the staring contest and told them to go up to the top of the mast.

Since the humans had returned to their own business they had no trouble flying up. When they reached the top it took a few minutes to take in the gorgeous sight that they were met with.

'..Woah.'

Stars glistened beautifully on the night sky and decorated the moon like sprinkles on a cake. With the light of the stars and moon shining down on the trio of birds they looked almost supernatural.

But that glow didn't just make them look amazing, it also reflected on the dark blue ocean below them.

The lights danced across the small waves almost playfully, the sea foam taking on a pearl-like lustre.

After staring at it for almost a whole minute, Lucia was the first to break out of the daze. She shook her head around and saw that nothing had gone wrong during the stupor of awe.

Grappling her claws a bit tighter on the top of the mast she saw made sure that the three of them and the woman next to her were fine.

The woman next to her?

Wait what.

Panic ran through her body as she whipped her head around to stare at the person. Immediately, she recognised that it was the mysterious captain of the ship..

Silently telling the others about the situation, she tried to recover from the shock and act like a normal, unassuming bird. It shouldn't be that hard right?

After all, it was deep into the night so how would she even see them.

Olivia managed to maintain her composure and somewhat succeeded. Kristen however, was a completely different story.

'WHAT.'

Completely and utterly shocked, she unknowingly loosened her grip and fell off the top of the mast.

'HELP!!!'

Waving her wings around like a crazy person she fell almost 10 meters before managing to bring herself back up.

Panic alarms were blaring in her mind as she returned to her former position.

Despite the embarrassing scene, the woman was unfazed and still gazed up at the sky with deep appreciation in her eyes. As Olivia and Kristen were talking telepathically and fretting on what to do, they failed to notice that the woman had actually turned her gaze over to them.

There was no suspicion or doubt in her features, a massive relief to Kristens nerves.

"What a wonderful night. Only a few people get to see this sort of thing and yet, you guys must see it all the time up in the clouds." The woman began.

"How lucky you are to be able to see all of the world, but most of your race don't even realise the beauty of it. Hahaa must be nature's way of keeping things balanced."

Her voice was gentle and calm, like the feeling of turning a page on a book. The birds' reactions were opposite.

Lucia had come to the conclusion that the strange woman hadn't realised that they weren't part of the majority of their race and did in fact, realise the things around them.

Meanwhile Olivia was trying to keep calm and wait for Lucia's signal if anything went south.

Kristen didn't even have time to process what the woman had said because she was still recovering from the absolute humiliation of before.

And the woman, slightly amused by the birds reactions, jumped down from the 60 meter tall mast so calmly it almost seemed like a normal thing for a human to do.

"She is definitely super strong. I'm calling it now, so don't blame me when we all die later on." Kristen muttered internally.

The captain landed without a sound on the deck and dusted her coat off. It shimmered faintly purple at the bottom for some reason.

Casting her gaze back up to the three dark silhouettes she tilted her head with amusement written all over her face.

"No need to tremble. If I wished to harm you then you would not still be here." Her voice carried with clarity despite the wind.

Kristen raised her head in alarm.

"She can definitely see us," Olivia said to the others telepathically.

Lucia didn't try to deny it.

Below, a deckhand called out something about the course they were taking, but the captain ignored him for now.

"You hid very well," she continued. "I'm impressed that I wasn't able to find you three until now."

Deciding now was the time to introduce themselves, Lucia slowly glided down. The other two followed in her shadow.

'Are we seriously doing this? Ugh.'

Lucia and Olivia landed gracefully onto the rail of the ship, while Kristen caused it to shake and wobble.

The captain glanced at this scene with even more mirth and then studied each of birds with interest.

"You are not ordinary birds."

Lucia spoke up first.

"And you are not an ordinary pirate."

The woman's eyes widened by a fraction.

"..ah"

The pause stretched for an uncomfortable amount of time, well actually, that's just what Kristen thought.

"So you can understand me."

Kristen screamed internally at the pauses in this painfully tense conversation.
