Chapter 8 - A Question of Conduct.

The summons arrived at dawn.

A plain jade slip lay outside Chen Yuan's door, its surface stamped with the insignia of the Disciplinary Hall.

No accusation was written.

Only an instruction.

Outer Disciple Chen Yuan

Report immediately for inquiry

Students noticed.

They always did.

Whispers followed Chen Yuan as he walked through the academy grounds—curious, cautious, eager.

"Disciplinary Hall?"

"Did he offend someone?"

"I told you—rising too fast draws trouble."

Chen Yuan's expression remained unchanged.

Inside, however, the system stirred.

Indirect Suppression Confirmed

Nature: Bureaucratic

Threat Level: Moderate

Recommended Response: Composure

Chen Yuan acknowledged silently.

The Disciplinary Hall was cold and austere.

Three elders sat behind a long stone desk. On either side stood inner-court attendants, faces impassive.

At the center sat Elder Zhao.

His presence alone explained everything.

"Chen Yuan," Elder Zhao said calmly, fingers interlaced. "You have been called due to certain… reports."

"What reports?" Chen Yuan asked respectfully.

Elder Zhao gestured.

An attendant stepped forward and read aloud.

"Outer Disciple Chen Yuan is accused of:

— abusing academy resources

— concealing external assistance during the Observation Trial

— and engaging in behavior disruptive to outer-court harmony."

The words were measured.

Carefully chosen.

Chen Yuan listened without interruption.

When the attendant finished, silence fell.

Elder Zhao leaned back.

"What do you have to say?"

Chen Yuan met his gaze steadily.

"I deny all accusations," he said evenly. "And I request verification."

A flicker passed through Elder Zhao's eyes.

"Verification?" he echoed.

"Yes," Chen Yuan replied. "Every mission I accepted is recorded. The Mirror Boundary Trial logs combat behavior automatically. As for harmony—no disciplinary action has ever been taken against me."

Murmurs rippled among the attendants.

Elder Zhao's fingers tapped once on the desk.

"Bold," he said lightly. "Very well. We will review the records."

He turned to an attendant.

"Retrieve the Spirit Mist Valley logs."

The attendant hesitated—just briefly—before nodding.

Minutes passed.

The hall remained silent.

When the attendant returned, his expression was… strained.

"Elder," he said carefully. "The logs show Disciple Chen Yuan entered alone, remained the full duration, and exited within normal parameters. No external interference recorded."

Elder Zhao's gaze hardened—just a fraction.

"And the Mirror Boundary?"

Another attendant stepped forward.

"Trial records confirm autonomous evaluation. No anomalies detected."

Silence again.

The accusations, one by one, dissolved.

But Elder Zhao did not end the inquiry.

Instead, he smiled faintly.

"Even so," he said, "rapid advancement often indicates instability. Until further observation, Chen Yuan's inner-court recommendation will be temporarily suspended."

That was the true strike.

The hall stirred.

This was not punishment.

It was delay.

Legal.

Difficult to contest.

Chen Yuan bowed calmly.

"I understand," he said.

But as he straightened, the system activated.

Forced Delay Detected

Nature: Administrative

Compensation Condition Triggered

No reward appeared.

Not yet.

Outside the hall, Zhao Ming waited.

He watched Chen Yuan emerge, expression unreadable.

"Well?" Zhao Ming asked softly. "How was the inquiry?"

Chen Yuan looked at him calmly.

"Educational."

Zhao Ming smiled.

"Good. You should learn where your place is."

Chen Yuan did not reply.

He walked past.

And for the first time, Zhao Ming felt something twist in his chest.

Because Chen Yuan did not look defeated.

He looked… prepared.

That evening, word spread quickly.

Chen Yuan's recommendation was "under review."

Some students sighed in relief.

Others frowned.

"This is too convenient."

"Elder Zhao is involved—of course."

"So that's how it works."

Instructor Lu read the report in silence.

Then frowned.

In his dorm room, Chen Yuan sat cross-legged, breathing evenly.

The system interface expanded.

Observation Period Initiated

Duration: Indeterminate

Hidden Clause Active

A new line appeared, glowing faintly.

Note:

Administrative pressure accelerates exposure

Suppression attempts will be publicly logged

Chen Yuan's eyes opened slowly.

"So the more they push," he murmured, "the clearer it becomes."

The system pulsed once—gently.

Elsewhere, Zhao Ming met with his uncle.

"It's done," Zhao Ming said confidently. "He won't receive the recommendation."

Elder Zhao nodded.

"Do not relax yet," he warned. "If he truly has nothing to hide, continued scrutiny may turn against us."

Zhao Ming frowned.

"That won't happen."

But for the first time, his certainty wavered.

Because something about Chen Yuan's calm refusal to struggle unsettled him deeply.
