Chapter 155 - Vol. 7: Chapt. 25: The Gilded Cage

The Gilded Cage

On the far side of the necropolis, where Team B's territory lay amidst a cluster of jagged, needle-like spires, the air was thick and stagnant, choked with the heavy scent of ancient incense and cold rot. George, Nana, Kayn, Arthur, Flynn, and Jett navigated the narrow, gothic alleyways with caution, their boots crunching on the obsidian gravel. Finally, they reached a wide, circular courtyard dominated by a massive, headless statue of a forgotten king.

They weren't alone.

Standing in the center of the square, blocking the only path forward, were the remaining guardians of Team B. Siri Heisenberg stood at the front, her sharp, calculating eyes tracking their every movement. Beside her, Nora Silverstone held her ground, her expression as unyielding as cold flint. Lucy Frost leaned casually against a shattered plinth, adjusting her deep blue velvet cloak. Her frost-blue braid swayed against her shoulder as she watched Team A's arrival with a mischievous, chilling smirk that sent a shiver down George's spine.

Behind the trio, Davina Petrova stood with an unnerving, statuesque stillness. She didn't adopt a combative stance or draw a weapon; she simply observed, her presence radiating a quiet, ancient power that seemed to vibrate in the very stones beneath them.

"You're late," Siri remarked, her voice cutting through the mournful whistle of the necropolis wind. "We were starting to think the shadows had claimed you already."

"We're not here for small talk, Siri," George responded, his hand tightening around the hilt of his blade. His emerald eyes remained fixed on the opposition, noting the way their auras began to hum in anticipation. Beside him, Nana's dark purple braids crackled with static electricity, and Kayn's large frame tensed, ready to surge forward.

"Neither are we," Davina replied softly.

With a subtle, rhythmic movement of her hand, Davina tapped into the ambient mana of the Jaws of Fate. The air around the courtyard began to shimmer and warp, glowing with a pale, ethereal light. Before Team A could launch an offensive, a massive, translucent dome erupted from the ground, surging upward with a violent hum to meet in a point high above the ruined rooftops.

The barrier was thick and pulsating with a dense arcane resonance, effectively sealing the six members of Team A inside the courtyard with Siri, Nora, and Lucy. Davina remained just on the outside of the shimmering veil, her silhouette blurred by the sheer intensity of the magic. Arthur stepped forward, slamming a gauntleted fist against the barrier, but the surface merely rippled like water, absorbing the kinetic energy and humming a low, menacing frequency.

"An enclosed battleground," Davina explained from the other side, her voice muffled but clear. "A gilded cage for the final act. No interference from the city's shadows, and no escape for either side until the hour is up or the flags are taken."
