Chapter 23 - Fellowship

INOCHI VS KURAI

As their palms met and eyes intertwined, both participants drew back, caught in a tangible tension.

With a sorrowful spirit, Kurai quickly initiated her assault again, lunging at Inochi, who, feeling an inevitable acceptance, deftly readjusted his position.

Kurai unleashed a flurry of attacks, all gracefully avoided by Inochi, who then, with a somber resolve, responded with a swift kick.

Kurai dodged, tumbling sadly on the ground and knocking Inochi down, subjecting him to the pull of gravity.

As Kurai pressed on, Inochi, fueled by a somber determination, rolled away and stood up, preparing himself once more.

Kurai, without hesitation, fired a barrage of shuriken.

Inochi, retreating with backflips and enveloped in sadness, evaded the shuriken, then launched a fire technique at Kurai.

She countered with a water technique, astonishing Inochi with her sorrowful resourcefulness.

KURAI TAUNTS INOCHI

Kurai then addressed Inochi's apparent reluctance towards the fight, which he, with a hint of unease, pinned on her being a woman.

Kurai, with a touch of scorn, questioned his hesitation, especially given his ambition to become a Grandmaster, undermining his determination.

Stirred by her provocations, Inochi decided to fight without holding back.

A storm of actions followed, with Inochi employing his sword, their skills evident through Kurai's Water Dragon Bullet and Inochi's Earth Barrier, in a melancholy exhibition of martial prowess.

Kurai recognized Inochi's skill, hinting at intensifying their melancholic duel.

KURAI'S KOKKOROGAN

She then released her Kokkorogan, a signature technique of the Hinotori clan, catching Inochi by surprise.

He, recalling the move from a prior encounter, voiced his concern, to which Kurai, with a somber confidence, proclaimed her control over the skill.

Their battle intensified, Kurai using her Kokkorogan to gain the upper hand, eventually disarming Inochi and ending their harsh conflict with her sword at his neck.

KURAI WINS

Inochi conceded, acknowledging Kurai's dominance, admitting his loss was due to underestimating her and not fully committing.

Both revealed they had held back, concealing their true strengths, with Kurai hinting at the concealed power of her Kokkorogan.

Acknowledging each other's capabilities and potential, they envisioned future confrontations before deciding to relax and appreciate a moment of tranquility together, demonstrating respect and camaraderie between them.

Kurai then suggested that they should enjoy some dango under the magnificent Sakura tree.

Inochi, with a smile, earnestly agreed.

As they headed to the dumpling sellers, buying two dumplings each, they walked to the Sakura tree, admiring the view of the sunset.

CONNECTING

Inochi then turned to Kurai, making an observation and commenting, "Your sister must have really been pushing you hard in training, huh?"

Kurai responds with a smile, then gazes at the sun, saying she intends to take the exams to impress her father.

KURAI'S THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS

She mentioned that Hikari always shone brightly but eventually her light dimmed due to Daku sending her on High class and Elite Class missions at a very young age.

She barely had time with her sister, but now, with Daku gone, her sister can train her and spend time with her.

Inochi, with a sad expression, notes from what Kurai shared, her sister endured a lot, yet finds it strange because whenever he sees her, she appears joyful and perfectly fine.

Kurai, unleashing her Kokkorogan, declares that despite employing her Kokkorogan, grasping Hikari's essence still eludes her, yet as moments pass, her perception sharpens, enhancing her comprehension gradually.

HIKARI'S PERCEPTION

Hikari discerns that truths can be ensconced in silence, even if such silence breeds destruction… Nevertheless, certain sacrifices remain invisible, some actions are beyond redemption, and some burdens one has to shoulder solo.

"The most important thing she told me," she says, "she used to wonder if she remembered who she was before the pain changed her.

She thought healing meant returning to her old self, the one who believed in a love that didn't break her.

She said healing isn't about returning to who you were; it's about accepting who you will become.

She stated the truth is, her pain didn't leave; it just became a part of her story, a scar that no longer aches, but reminds her she survived.

She told me there comes a day when you stop asking 'Why?' and start whispering 'Thank you.'

You're thankful for the lesson and the strength.

She mentioned she still thanks the universe, showing she could still love even after loss.

She said you don't feel whole overnight.

But piece by piece, you'll gradually rebuild yourself, not as who you were, but as who you were always meant to be."

She said the last thing she asked herself was whether she was trying to heal who she was or finally learning to love who she has become in today's reality.

Inochi, taken aback by those remarks, lowers his gaze and expresses, "Wow, that's genuinely heartbreaking to hear, Kurai.

How were you able to cope with all that?"

Kurai responds that she had the unwavering support of her mother throughout everything.

Her mom was a source of comfort, ensuring her safety and shielding her from the world's harsh realities.

Once she learned that her sister and father were being exploited, it ignited a fire in her to train as a Kunoichi, to grow strong in order to safeguard her loved ones.

INOCHIS WORDS TO KURAI

As tears start to run down her face from Kurai's eyes, Inochi wraps an arm around her, pulling her into a tight embrace.

He then shares, "I've faced my share of hardships too; I lost my dad in a battle. It left deep scars, but then Lord Shukumei reignited the flame within me."

But let me share a piece of wisdom I've picked up along the way: as we navigate through life, we come to understand a fundamental reality - being human is inherently complex...

Each one of us harbors concealed struggles, wounds yet to heal, fears that pursue us, and doubts that restrain our inner selves.

Within every individual lies a blend of previous pains and current recoveries.

We're all in the pursuit of improvement, weighed down by our own challenges.

Take my father, for example; he meant the world to me.

Our anxieties and traumas, our most profound fears.

The true challenge isn't about finding a person or thing devoid of issues; it's about finding someone or something that is transparent about their issues.

It's about someone who actively engages in self-improvement while embracing their own path, acknowledging that healing is a collective process.

We're all in a state of learning, healing, and, most importantly, evolving.

What unites us isn't the absence of imperfections; it's the openness about our imperfections, about our trials, and our communal path.

Kurai proceeds to clear her face, and as the breeze wafts by, she raises her gaze toward Inochi, who has his eyes shut, bearing a smile on his face.
