Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: RIPPLES

Chapter 41: RIPPLES

The planning room felt smaller than I remembered.

Two weeks since Switzerland. Two weeks of Atlantic crossing, of healing frostbite and burns, of watching newspapers for any sign that our escape had been noticed. The Foundation's public operations continued smoothly—Henderson had managed everything during our absence with his usual quiet competence. The legitimate face remained untouched.

But the hidden war had changed.

"The intelligence is confirmed." Peggy spread documents across the table with methodical precision. "Ahnenerbe has circulated descriptions to every affiliated organization in Europe. 'American archaeological society. Wealthy benefactor. Operates covertly. Responsible for theft and destruction of significant artifacts.' They've even attached physical descriptions—accurate enough to cause problems."

The team absorbed this in silence. Sam's expression didn't change—he'd expected exposure from the moment we'd fled the château. Eleanor's face was harder to read. Steinberg looked tired, the weight of knowing his former countrymen were actively hunting his new colleagues.

"How widely distributed?" My voice was steady despite the implications.

"Every major European intelligence service has received copies. The descriptions have been flagged to border security in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland." Peggy paused. "They're not just watching for us. They're actively hunting."

"Then we need to move faster." Sam stepped to the map. "Expand operations into areas where European influence is limited. Asia. The Pacific. Regions where Nazi reach doesn't extend."

"Rapid expansion creates security vulnerabilities." Steinberg's counter came immediately. "Every new recruit is a potential leak. Every new facility is a target. We built this organization carefully—"

"And careful got us exposed." Sam's voice carried frustration I hadn't heard before. "They know we exist now. Standing still means eventually being caught. We need distance. We need options."

The debate continued for twenty minutes, each side presenting valid concerns. Steinberg worried about infiltration—the same tactics that had compromised German Jewish communities could be turned against us. Sam worried about stagnation—an organization that stopped growing was an organization that started dying.

I let them argue while the System processed data I couldn't share openly.

[ANOMALY DETECTION: ASIAN THEATER]

[MULTIPLE SIGNATURES DETECTED]

[INDIA: 7 SIGNATURES — PATTERN: ORGANIZED]

[CHINA: 3 SIGNATURES — PATTERN: RANDOM]

[TIBET: 2 SIGNATURES — PATTERN: DORMANT]

[SOUTHEAST ASIA: 4 SIGNATURES — PATTERN: UNKNOWN]

The Indian readings drew my attention. Seven signatures forming a recognizable pattern—not random artifacts scattered across geography, but something coordinated. Something active. Something that matched memories I couldn't explain having.

"Compromise." My voice cut through the debate. "We expand strategically, not universally. Asia offers distance from European intelligence networks while providing access to significant archaeological sites. We establish one hub, build carefully, and use that position to investigate concerning developments."

"What developments?" Eleanor's question was sharp.

"The Foundation has been monitoring for anomaly signatures worldwide." I kept my voice neutral, professional. "Recent readings suggest significant activity in northern India. Not random—organized. Whatever's happening there needs investigation."

Steinberg pulled files from his research stack. "India has substantial archaeological importance. The British have been excavating for decades. But there are also traditions—practices that predate colonial arrival. Some quite dangerous."

"Dangerous how?"

"The Thuggee cult." He found the relevant documents. "Professional killers organized around worship of Kali. The British claimed to have eliminated them in the 1830s. But historical analysis suggests survival was always possible—they simply went underground."

The information aligned with memories I couldn't acknowledge. Temple of Doom. Sankara Stones. A cult that had never truly died, preparing for resurgence that would shake the region. The timeline was approaching—not immediate, but close enough to demand preparation.

"Cross-reference the anomaly patterns with historical Thuggee activity." I kept my expression neutral. "If there's correlation—"

"I'll begin immediately." Steinberg gathered his materials. "Though I should note: if the cult genuinely survived, if they're operating at scale again, we're facing something far more dangerous than random artifact recovery."

"That's why we need to investigate."

The meeting continued, covering logistics and timelines and the thousand details that transformed concepts into operations. By the time it ended, we had a framework: establish an Asian hub, investigate Indian anomalies, build infrastructure that could survive if American operations were compromised.

Eleanor caught me afterward, in the hallway.

"You know something." Her voice was quiet but insistent. "About what's in India. You knew where to look before Steinberg mentioned patterns."

"I know enough to be worried."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the best I can give right now." I met her eyes. "There are things I understand that I can't fully explain. You've seen that before. You know I'm not inventing threats."

She studied me with that analytical intensity I'd grown accustomed to—the same assessment she'd applied to every puzzle since Brighton.

"The Eye showed you something. Before you destroyed it. Something about India."

The observation was too close to truth for comfort. The Eye had shown visions, yes—but my concern about India came from somewhere deeper, from memories that predated my arrival in this body.

"The Eye showed many things. Most of them terrible." I turned away. "What matters now is making sure those things don't happen."

"I'll add it to my list." Her voice carried dry humor despite the tension. "Questions about James Caldwell that he won't answer."

"It's a long list."

"Getting longer every day."

I left her to her investigations and headed for my office, where maps and intelligence reports waited. The Guild was exposed. The enemy was hunting. And somewhere in India, something ancient was stirring.

The countdown had begun.
