Training changed inside Residualis.
The Residual did not teach through combat or exhaustion. They taught through presence. Lior spent hours in silent halls where dozens of the lattice-beings simply existed around him, their collective quiet amplifying and refining his own silver resonance until the distinction between individual and shared balance began to blur.
Nyx adapted fastest, learning to move through the city without disturbing its harmonics. Kael struggled longer; the absence of clear threats unsettled him more than any battlefield. Seris moved among the Residual as though recognizing distant kin, the ember-flame at their shoulder often joined by similar small lights that the city provided.
Lior learned that the spent fragment in his pocket was not unique. Residualis held dozens of similar remnants—pieces of Thin Ones who had chosen continuance over erasure in ages past, only to be judged incomplete by the First Dark and driven into hiding. His fragment was simply the newest, and the first in a long time to arrive still warm with recent use.
One evening Archivist Vale brought him to a lower chamber where a single incomplete principle—larger than the seven he had seen—turned slowly in the dark.
This is the original draft of Continuance Without Erasure. Your silver quiet has already begun to finish it. The city offers what remains of our knowledge. In return we ask only that when the next great sum arrives, you remember we are part of the balance.
