The system had told him about the cores two hours before he'd gone to the library.
He'd been running the cultivation status check — the morning routine, numbers and progress and the slow patient accounting of what had moved and what hadn't — when the notification arrived without being prompted.

[INFORMATION — MONSTER CORES AND HOST COMPATIBILITY]
[Monster cores are the condensed essence of a monster's cultivation energy. The accumulated power of a monster's entire existence, compressed into a crystalline form at death. They represent the highest concentration of monster-class energy available through any conventional means.]
[Standard use: Monster cores are valuable trade commodities and material components in Runic Forge and Soulcraft work. They cannot be absorbed by human cultivators. The energy type is fundamentally incompatible with human cultivation frameworks. Absorption attempts produce rejection reactions ranging from mild discomfort to severe channel damage.]
[Host exception: Serail carries the Monster Channel ability. At current development this ability cannot channel living monster energy directly. It can process monster cores.]
[When a monster core makes contact with Serail, the blade absorbs the condensed energy and translates it. The translation does not produce body layer cultivation progress. It develops the Monster Channel ability itself — the mastery, the efficiency, the capacity for what the ability will eventually become.]
[Think of it as training the instrument rather than playing it. The cores teach Serail's ability how to handle monster energy. What that ability becomes as mastery develops is a separate matter.]
[Boundless Sovereignty Multiplier applies to mastery progress from core absorption: x10]
[This information is being provided because the host is about to spend two days in an institution with access to monster hunting grounds. The opportunity cost of not knowing seemed significant.]
---
He'd read it at the time, filed it, and finished his morning routine.
Now, standing outside the Academy's transport hub, he was doing the math on what it meant practically.
Monster cores. Inaccessible to most cultivators for cultivation purposes — valuable as materials, worthless as personal advancement resources. Which meant the market for them reflected materials demand rather than cultivation demand. Which meant they were cheaper than anything with equivalent cultivation value would normally be.
Serail could develop through them.
'Cultivation resources that nobody else wants for cultivation,' he thought. 'Priced accordingly.'
He looked at the transport hub's posted destinations and checked his points.
---
The hunting grounds were divided by rank.
First and second stratum candidates accessed the lower grounds — Feral, Savage, some Brutal. He spent six hundred points on transport to the Ember-tier grounds. Another four hundred on one hour of access.
One thousand total. Out of fifteen thousand starting allocation.
He thought about that ratio and decided it was acceptable given what the hour was for.
The transport activated.
---
The Ember-tier grounds looked like a managed forest.
Not the Forbidden Woods — nothing with that particular weight. Warmer. The regularity of the tree spacing suggested deliberate cultivation, the monster population calibrated to support a handful of candidates operating simultaneously without depleting. He felt two other presences at the far end of the zone when he arrived. He moved away from them.
He had an hour and a specific objective.
He drew Serail.
---
The first Feral died in two exchanges.
He'd been handling Feral-grade monsters since the third hour of the Monster Hunt Trial. The gap between then and now — opened channels, refined killing intent in the body energy baseline, combat methodology settling further into his current body — made two exchanges feel clean rather than difficult.
He held his position over the fallen monster and watched Serail.
The blade was doing something.
Not visibly. A change in the quality of the variable weight, a directional pull toward the monster's chest where the core was forming in the seconds after death. Monster cores didn't pre-exist — they condensed at death, the accumulated energy of a monster's existence crystallizing as the living system that had held it dispersed.
He pressed Serail's blade against the site.
The core formed and the blade pulled it in simultaneously, the two processes happening in the same half-second. Serail absorbing what would have been a harvestable core before it fully solidified.
He checked the status.

[MONSTER CHANNEL — SERAIL]
[Core Absorbed: Feral Grade]
[Mastery Progress: Trace amount]
[Boundless Sovereignty Multiplier applied: x10]
[Adjusted Progress: Still trace. But 10x trace.]
[Translation Note: No cultivation energy transferred to host. Core energy is being used to develop the ability itself, not advance the host's cultivation layer.]
[Monster Channel Mastery: 0.001%]
---
He looked at that number.
0.001% from one core. With the multiplier that was 0.0001% raw — genuinely negligible. But the multiplier made the negligible ten times less negligible, which was still small and was still real.
'Volume,' he thought. 'This is a volume game. The mastery grows with use. As it grows, what the ability can do grows with it. Right now I'm teaching the instrument. Eventually the instrument will be worth having taught.'
He started moving.
---
He found a rhythm.
Feral after Feral, the zone's population providing consistent supply, his efficiency at this rank making the time cost per kill low enough that volume was a realistic goal within one hour. He moved, engaged, pressed Serail to the core site, felt the blade absorb, moved again. No lingering. No examining each absorption beyond confirming the blade had done what it was supposed to do.
At the thirty-minute mark he checked.

[MONSTER CHANNEL — SERAIL]
[Cores absorbed: 23]
[Monster Channel Mastery: 0.023%]
[Boundless Sovereignty Multiplier applied: x10 throughout]
[Raw mastery without multiplier would be: 0.0023%]
[Mastery Threshold Note: At approximately 0.1% mastery, translation efficiency begins. The host will start receiving a small fraction of core energy as usable cultivation resource in addition to ability development. Current rate of progress: approximately 0.001% per core absorbed. Threshold requires approximately 77 more cores at current rate.]
[Displaced Channel Mastery: 0%]
[Anomalic Corruption: 0.2041% — unchanged this session]
---
77 more cores to reach the first meaningful threshold.
He looked at that and thought about time and access costs and what one hour produced and how many hours at this pace reached 77 cores.
'Several sessions,' he thought. 'Not today. Not even this week probably, at current access costs. But the trajectory is clear.'
He found the exchange station at the zone's central clearing.
A small post, one staff member, the quality of someone whose job involved mostly waiting.
"Exchange or purchase?" the man said.
"Purchase first," Varek said. "What's available."
He read through the list.
Three things stood out.
A concentration herb — temporarily increased body energy density during cultivation sessions. 200 points or fifteen Feral cores. He had neither enough harvested cores nor the points to spare without thinking about it carefully.
He put it back.
A soul stabilization stone — passive soul energy stabilization for the holder. 500 points. Not useful for his current layer. Potentially relevant for the Soul trial, which was administered by something older than the Academy and which he didn't yet understand well enough to know what he'd need going in.
He bought it. Small, dense, went into the spatial storage component without ceremony.
A breakthrough preparation technique fragment — incomplete, clearly torn from a larger text, describing a method for compressing body energy before a stratum transition. 300 points.
He looked at this one longer.
Body layer advancement required completing the Soul trial first — he couldn't push toward second stratum until the trial was done. But the fragment described preparation methodology, not the breakthrough itself. Understanding the preparation now cost 300 points. Not understanding it until later cost nothing except the gap between what he'd know then and what he'd know now.
He bought it. 800 points total at the exchange station.
Points remaining: 13,200.
He put the stone and the fragment away and went back to work.
---
The second thirty minutes were different in quality if not in approach.
Same rhythm. Same efficiency. His mind running somewhere else while the physical work ran on the prior life's settled methodology.
He thought about the Monster Channel mastery and what it would look like at higher development.
The system had said the ability would eventually channel living monster energy, not just cores. At current mastery — 0.023% — that was theoretical. A future capability, not a present one. But the direction was interesting. Channeling energy from living monsters in combat meant the sword's ability and the combat itself would interact. Monsters he fought would become resources rather than just obstacles.
He thought about the Displaced Channel sitting at 0% with no path to progress yet.
'Different order of incompatibility,' he thought. 'Monster energy is incompatible with standard human cultivation frameworks. Displaced energy is incompatible with even that. Whatever Displaced energy is — it's so far outside the framework that my current constitution has no interface for it at all.'
'But the ability is there. Serail has it. Which means at some point the constitution develops the interface.'
'At some point.'
He pressed Serail to another core site.
Felt the blade absorb.
Kept moving.
---
The timer ended.
He walked to the clearing. Checked the final numbers.
---
[MONSTER CHANNEL — SESSION SUMMARY]
[Total cores absorbed: 51]
[Monster Channel Mastery: 0.051%]
[Boundless Sovereignty Multiplier applied: x10 throughout]
[Progress toward translation threshold: Approximately 49 cores remaining]
[Displaced Channel Mastery: 0%]
[Anomalic Corruption: 0.2041% — no change this session]
[Body Layer Cultivation: No change — advancement requires Soul trial completion]
[Items acquired via exchange:]
[Soul Stabilization Stone x1]
[Breakthrough Preparation Technique Fragment x1 — Incomplete]
[Points spent: 1,800 total]
[Points remaining: 13,200]
---
He looked at 0.051%.
Small. Real. Moving in the right direction.
The translation threshold at 0.1% was within reach — two more sessions of similar productivity, maybe three depending on zone access costs and monster density. Once he crossed it, the cores would start producing something usable alongside the mastery development. Small fractions of monster energy translated into cultivation-compatible form, the same category of imperfect but real progress that the system had described.
Two gains from one activity once the threshold was crossed.
He thought about that compounding forward. The mastery improving the translation efficiency. The efficiency improving the cultivation resource generated per core. The cultivation resource supporting everything else he was developing. All of it moving from the same starting activity.
'Good structure,' he thought. Not with satisfaction exactly — more with the particular appreciation he had for mechanisms that worked correctly.
The transport activated.
The Ember-tier grounds dissolved. The Academy's eastern wing materialized.
He walked toward the common hall with the technique fragment in his spatial storage and two days before Academy formally began and the numbers moving in the directions they needed to move.
He pulled out the fragment as he walked and started reading.
