Chapter 32 - Mirabel's potion initiation

Rael and Lyo stood in the expansive inner field of Mirabel's house. Their eyes were wide, bodies tense, caught somewhere between fascination and alertness. The flowers around them swayed gently, like a colorful ocean under a soft, almost unreal breeze. Lyo's gaze fixed on the first potion on the polished wooden table—a vial filled with a sparkling green liquid. Rael, meanwhile, looked ready to dive straight in, his face lit up with nearly childlike excitement.

"I'll try it first," Lyo said seriously, clenching his fists slightly. "You never know," he added, throwing an uneasy glance at Rael.

"What do you mean?! It's just a potion!" Rael exclaimed, his face twisting in disbelief. "You think it's going to turn you into a frog or something?"

From her comfortable spot on the petal-covered floor, Mirabel raised an eyebrow. Her eyes twinkled with mischief, yet her tone remained calm and composed.

"You're worried about your friend. You think it might be dangerous, don't you?" she said with a faint smile. "If that's the case, drink it and see. None of these are poisoned. I assure you, everything here is perfectly safe."

Still hesitant, Lyo reached for the vial. His pulse quickened slightly, but he drew a deep breath, deciding to trust Mirabel. Without asking for further details about the potion's effects, he brought it to his lips and drank it in one swift, almost mechanical motion.

The liquid slid down his throat, and for a few seconds, he froze, eyes slightly widened, as if suspended between two realities. Rael, unable to understand what was happening, took a step back, his gaze locked on his friend with a mix of worry and curiosity.

"Lyo?" he called. "So… how is it?"

Still silent, Lyo remained motionless for a few more seconds. Then, slowly, he set the empty vial down on the table. A broad smile spread across his face, and his eyes shone with a new, almost intense light.

"What… is this…" he murmured, awe in his voice. "It feels like my magical reserves… are ten times stronger than usual!"

Leaning forward slightly, Mirabel wore a small, satisfied smile. She nodded and said,

"That's because they are. This is a magic-enhancement potion. I created it a few weeks ago—an improvement on an older formula designed to stimulate latent mana reserves in its user."

She paused, studying Lyo carefully, as if gauging the exact effects. Then, with purposeful steps, she approached the young man, who now stood tall, his magical energy visibly pulsing around him.

"Very well," she said. "Let's see what you can do now. Try something. Show me what this extra energy can accomplish."

Lyo drew a deep breath and nodded. His eyes fell on a medium-sized tree nearby, its trunk solid and sturdy. A subtle tension ran through his body, but this time, it wasn't fear—it was anticipation, excitement.

"I'll try something new," he murmured to himself.

He focused his magic into his fist. Normally, he would have used levitation to manipulate objects, but this time, he wanted to test his own limits. The newfound energy wrapped around his arm, pulsing and crackling faintly. Muscles taut, he inhaled deeply and struck the tree trunk with all the force he could summon.

A cracking sound echoed, followed by the splintering of wood. A wide mark appeared on the trunk, as if a giant hammer had struck it. Lyo stepped back slightly, breath quick, a smile breaking across his face.

"This… is amazing!" he exclaimed. "I never thought I could generate this much power!"

Rael stood there, mouth agape, unable to believe his eyes. He looked from the tree to Lyo, almost feeling the shockwave from the punch.

"Lyo… you just destroyed that in one hit… but it's awesome!" he shouted, excitement practically radiating from him. "I want to try it too!"

Mirabel, watching the scene, let out a small, crystal-clear laugh. She was clearly pleased that her potion worked as intended. Lyo's joy, combined with Rael's irresistible curiosity, confirmed that her potions had found users capable of tapping into their full potential.

"Very well," she said. "Rael, your turn. But… be careful. The potion might not have the same effect on you. Each body is different."

Rael grabbed a similar vial and drank it quickly, his excitement outweighing any caution. A few seconds passed, and unlike Lyo, he didn't feel a significant surge of power.

"Nothing…" he muttered, a hint of disappointment in his voice.

"Nothing remarkable," Mirabel clarified calmly. "Don't worry. Each user reacts differently. It's not a failure. The potion stimulates latent mana, and sometimes, the effects don't appear immediately."

Rael shook his head but a mischievous smile stretched across his lips. "Well, it's still exciting, even if I didn't feel the same thing. I want to try the next one."

Mirabel nodded, handing over another vial, this one red, denser, and faintly smoking.

"This one is designed to enhance regeneration and physical resilience. You'll feel faster, more agile, and less fatigued."

Lyo, eyes still gleaming with excitement, grabbed the red vial and drank it in one gulp. A wave of warmth coursed through his body, followed by a sensation of lightness. His movements became fluid, almost effortless; his fingers and arms responded faster than ever.

"Wow…" he said, a bright smile on his face. "This is incredible… I feel stronger, faster… everything feels easier!"

Impatient, Rael drank the same vial and felt a similar effect, though slightly less intense than Lyo's.

"Yes, this is better than the first," he admitted. "I can feel my body responding faster. Movements are smoother, and I can focus my magic without strain."

Mirabel, seated among the flowers, watched with satisfaction. In her mind, she was already planning the next stage of her experiments. These young adventurers were perfect for testing the stability of her new creations. More importantly, they were strong and curious enough to push themselves, without her needing to manipulate them directly.

"Perfect," she said, standing and offering more vials. "I'll have you try other combinations. Each potion interacts differently with your innate magic. Some may produce surprising reactions."

Rael and Lyo exchanged a glance. A spark of excitement lit their eyes. For them, this mission had become almost a game. Every potion, every experiment, was a chance to discover their limits and test their magic.

Mirabel, meanwhile, was delighted. Finally, she could see years of research and creation producing tangible results. Every smile, every amazed movement of the young adventurers reinforced her conviction: these two could be her best testers—and perhaps the first to fully unlock the potential of her latest potions.

She sat back down, a faint smile on her lips, watching the two with a mix of pride and anticipation. These youths had incredible potential, and she intended to reveal it, one test at a time.
