Chapter 40 - Ch. 40

There was no sound of an explosion.

But his sidelong glances had caught clusters of dim green fireworks blooming in the air.

The Flesh-Worm Ghost was an Eerie Creature spherical in shape and light in weight; they could not control their own movement but went wherever the wind blew.

Tonight, the wind was strong.

These Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures stood upwind, occupying vantage points as they hurled one Flesh-Worm Ghost after another toward the city wall.

They attempted to destroy the wall in this manner, then charge into the camp's core area.

In the face of this assault, Chen Fan and his companions had little room to fight back. They did their best to shield themselves with the parapet from the splashes of thick green liquid. The rest was left to the Archery Towers.

This offensive was extremely fierce.

Some Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures were responsible for throwing Flesh-Worm Ghosts.

Another group of Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures had already begun charging toward the wall, followed by a host of Eerie Creatures like Mantis Eerie Creatures and Monkey-Head Ghosts.

"Arrow Storm!"

"Arrow Storm!"

A level 3 Archery Tower launched continuous flights of bolts into the sky, accurately hitting the Eerie Creatures charging into the camp. Casualties mounted quickly. The remaining ten level 2 Archery Towers also kept firing bolts.

Each bolt was like a vengeful devil from hell, claiming lives with precision.

"Boom!"

"Boom!"

They could hear the earth shaking. From the greyish fog strolled the Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creature underboss, whose size was noticeably larger than the rest of its kind, the ground quaking with each of its steps.

This underboss had apparently stronger limbs. It casually grabbed two Mantis Eerie Creatures from its side, took a few quick steps for momentum, and hurled them over the wall into the camp's core area, over and over again.

One Mantis Eerie Creature after another sailed over the wall.

In no time, the Mantis Eerie Creatures that crashed heavily inside sprang to their feet, screaming and lifting their mantis-like arms high above as they charged up the stone steps toward Chen Fan and the others.

At this moment—

Many Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures also reached the base of the wall. They picked up nearby Mantis Eerie Creatures, ramming their mantis-like arms into the wall like battering rams, attempting to breach it.

For a moment!

The camp was beset by internal and external troubles, with enemies both in front and behind.

It fell into an extremely perilous situation.

...

"Everyone, protect yourselves!"

Chen Fan shouted before quickly surveying outside the wall. The Flesh-Worm Ghosts had all been expended. Although this section of the wall had been corroded, looking heavily battered, it had not yet collapsed.

Many Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures were targeting this weak point in the wall.

The level 3 Archery Tower, imbued with fire elements, was precisely shooting at the high-level Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creature that had entered the camp. Its power was formidable; bolts rained down like hail.

The first arrow struck its forehead.

The second hit its eyes.

The third pierced its abdomen.

After taking another few steps forward, it staggered and fell to the ground, never to rise again, completely dead.

With the grenadier gone, no more Mantis Eerie Creatures were thrown inside the wall.

After bringing down this high-level Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creature, the Archery Tower began targeting the group of Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures charging at the base of the wall, picking them off one by one. Assisted by five level 2 Archery Towers, the Eerie Creatures near the wall were soon cleared.

The other five Archery Towers were quickly eliminating the Mantis Eerie Creatures that had landed inside the wall.

Meanwhile, the other level 3 Archery Tower, constantly activating its "Arrow Storm" skill, was swiftly annihilating the large numbers of Eerie Creatures charging into the camp.

The camp seemed like a small boat in a storm, teetering on the brink.

But in reality, it was as steady as an old pro.

Chen Fan and the others didn't have to do much----just survive, avoid the few Mantis Eerie Creatures that had gotten inside the camp, and leave the rest to the camp's defensive structures!

Just then—

A screaming Mantis Eerie Creature suddenly leapt from the shadows and charged at Chen Fan and the others, with its blade arms raised high for a slash.

A flash of lightning.

Chen Fan could even see the fine hairs around the mouth of this Eerie Creature.

Pallid and creepy.

"Clang!"

Immediately after, Crippled Monkey, wielding the Godslaying Spear, bolted forward to meet the attack. He raised his spear high to block the strike. However, the immense impact force knocked Crippled Monkey to the ground at once. Yet, he did deflect the Mantis Eerie Creature's sneak attack.

The next moment.

A bolt shot through the rain.

Hitting the bullseye.

The Mantis Eerie Creature, with no chance to attack again, suddenly stiffened mid-air and collapsed on the wall walk in the rainy night.

...

In the span of a few dozen breaths.

The battle was over.

Outside the walls, Eerie Creature corpses littered the ground. One section of the wall was on the verge of collapse. Inside the camp, not a single Eerie Creature remained standing.

"..."

Chen Fan swept his eyes over his companions, then looked inside the wall.

No one was injured.

Zhou Mo, who had been sleeping, had also been awakened. He now stood in the rainy night, holding a large blade, panting heavily, with blood seeping from the web of his thumb, looking up at Chen Fan.

He had never engaged in close combat with a Mantis Eerie Creature before.

A level 2 Archery Tower could kill a Mantis Eerie Creature instantly with one well-aimed bolt.

But—

He had just witnessed Zhou Mo exchanging several blows with a Mantis Eerie Creature, barely managing to defend himself. Even so, repeated clashes had caused his hand to bleed. A level 2 cultivator, even with an Extraordinary Treasure in hand, could not confront a mere cannon-fodder Mantis Eerie Creature.

Eerie Creatures... such beings were simply not something humans could face off against.

Even cultivators would struggle to.

And this was within the camp, where there was light.

If it were in the Perpetual Night, surrounded by thick darkness with zero visibility, Zhou Mo would not last three moves before dying by the blade of this Mantis Eerie Creature.

Chen Fan looked toward the sedan chair in the gray fog.

By now, all the Eerie Creatures besieging the camp had been annihilated, leaving only that sedan chair.

"Retreating?"

Chen Fan frowned slightly, watching the blood-red sedan chair slowly withdrawing in the gray fog. This female Eerie Creature's intelligence was too high; she was a major trouble. If she retreated this time and returned later, she would surely bring even more Eerie Creatures.

But he couldn't work out much of a solution.

He could only watch helplessly as she escaped. The Archery Towers could only attack creatures within the camp's range.

The next moment—

The four Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures carrying the sedan chair retreated about a few meters, then suddenly began running toward the camp and kept gathering speed. Like this, they charged straight into the camp.

The moment they set foot in, the sedan chair violently exploded.

Countless shards were nailed into the ground.

The four Bamboo-Pole Eerie Creatures had also been blasted into pieces.

"Ahahahaha!!!"

A piercing and bizarre, mad laughter instantly hung over the entire camp. A naked female Eerie Creature stood barefoot on the ground, looking up at the few people on the city wall.

Her cheeks were pale as snow, unlike the face of a living person.

Her features were exquisite, like a masterpiece meticulously carved by a craftsman.

Her eyes held no pupils, only a chaotic blackness, but her lips were exceptionally bright red.

Her jet-black hair cascaded past her waist, reaching down to her calves.

So beautiful.

This was Chen Fan's first impression. So beautiful she seemed not like an Eerie Creature, but more like a peerless beauty among mortals.

A naked woman often lacks much aesthetic appeal; it is the hint of clothing, half revealing and half concealing, that usually accentuates beauty.

But—

This female Eerie Creature wore not a single garment, standing naked between heaven and earth.

Yet there was not a trace of vulgarity about her. If anything, she exuded an aura of noble coldness.
