Kakashi Hatake walked into the classroom holding a copy of The Romantic Ninjutsu Tales of Shimura, Volume Six. The cover was exceptionally well-preserved, suggesting it was a prized possession. His indifferent gaze swept over the only three remaining students.
"Uzumaki Naruto, Uchiha Sasuke, and Sakura Haruno... you are Team 7."
He shook the novel in his hand. "I am your squad leader, Kakashi Hatake."
Sakura blinked in confusion. Why does this Jonin look like he hasn't woken up yet? And that book... The title was everywhere lately, but she hadn't expected a high-level Ninja to be reading it so openly.
Naruto was desperately trying not to laugh. He actually brought that to our formal meeting? Kakashi, you haven't skimped on supporting the "Comical Author of Lanling" over the years, have you! Sasuke frowned slightly. Was this lethargic, silver-haired man really the elite Shinobi they had been promised?
The four of them arrived on the rooftop. Kakashi leaned lazily against the railing, finally closing his book and stuffing it into his ninja tool pouch.
"Well~ how about this," he said, scratching his silver hair. His exposed right eye curved into a crescent moon. "Since none of you are speaking, I'll start! Let's do a brief self-introduction so we can get to know each other."
He cleared his throat and spoke in a monotone, as if reading a grocery list. "My name is Kakashi Hatake. Things I like and things I hate? I don't have anything I particularly like or hate. As for my dream..." He looked up at the passing clouds. "Yare yare, at my age, there aren't many dreams left to pursue."
Sakura's inner self was roaring. What kind of introduction was that? He told us absolutely nothing!
Kakashi pointed a finger at the blonde boy. "You go first."
"My name is Uzumaki Naruto!" Naruto flashed his signature brilliant smile. "I like training and eating with my friends, and I don't have anything I particularly hate. My dream is to become the Hokage and protect the Village."
A bright and cheerful kid, Kakashi thought. Easy to guide. Hopefully, Guy didn't rub off on him too much.
Sasuke spoke up next, his hands shoved in his pockets. "My name is Uchiha Sasuke. What I like is confidential. What I hate is confidential. My dream is also confidential."
Kakashi felt a massive headache brewing. One was a sun, the other a void. It was an extreme dynamic that reminded him all too much of himself and Obito. The Sandaime really arranged a 'surprise' for me, he sighed internally.
"And the lady?"
"My name is Sakura Haruno, and I like Red Bean Dumpling Soup! I don't have anything I particularly hate!" Sakura answered quickly, glancing secretly at Naruto. Seeing him smile, she stood taller. "My dream is... to become a beautiful and powerful female Ninja."
Kakashi raised an eyebrow. He noticed the look she gave Naruto. It seems my teacher's son is quite the lady-killer, he mused.
"Since the introductions are over, listen closely to your first mission!" Kakashi held up an index finger, his voice dropping to a mysterious whisper. "Gather tomorrow morning at five o'clock at the Village Training Ground."
He paused for effect. "Also, a friendly reminder: don't eat breakfast. I'm afraid you might throw it right back up."
Sakura gasped. "Does that mean we're facing something terrifying?" Sasuke's posture shifted; he was listening intently now.
Naruto watched the "weird uncle" act with a silent sense of respect. He knew the tragedy behind that mask. Kakashi's life had been a series of cruel blows—his father's suicide, Obito's "death," the accident with Rin, and the loss of Minato. The world had tried to break him, to clip his wings and leave him in the mud.
Guy-sensei really is incredible, Naruto thought. Guy, who was told he had no talent, used his stubborn friendship to kick open Kakashi's shut heart time and again. They were the original "Scatterbrain and Grump" duo.
"We'll talk about the details later," Kakashi waved a hand, feigning profoundness. "Have sweet dreams tonight... or the next few days might be nightmares."
He successfully activated his "Great Deceiver Mode." Watching Sakura look nervous and Sasuke look intensely focused, Kakashi's eye narrowed into a slit. Genin fresh out of the academy are so easy to fool.
Naruto, knowing exactly what the "Bell Test" entailed, just smiled. He was already thinking about how to turn the tables on his new teacher.
