Cornelia stood still, her red eyes locked on the Bloodline Test Tower as if she could force it to confess a different answer if she stared long enough.
The ancient blood inside remained calm, thick and dark and completely unmoved, as though Cain's touch had meant nothing at all. Her mind was a whirl of confusion.
She could not match what she had just witnessed with what she knew.
She had seen him stand before Emperors from the blood that he gave her.
She had felt the vastness inside him, the endless depth that made even her own Princess level of bloodline lineage feel small.
So why was the tower showing nothing?
Beside her, Cain turned his head slightly and gave her a brief side glance. He caught the faint crease between her brows, the small tightness at the corner of her lips, the doubt she was trying so hard to hide.
Inside his mind, he laughed again, softer this time, almost affectionate.
