Chapter 30: DAWN OF THE WOLF
Sunlight wakes me. Warm. Too bright.
I blink. Focus. The back room of Sugar's bar. Couch beneath me. Blanket over me.
My body aches. Deep. Cellular level. The kind of pain that comes from rebuilding.
I sit up slowly. Check myself. The shoulder wound is a pink scar. Raised. Permanent. The arm wound is similar. My ribs are tender but functional. The thigh is stiff but holds weight.
I'm alive. Healed. Impossible but real.
A chair scrapes. I turn. Siobhan sits in the corner. She's been watching. How long?
"You should be dead," she says. No greeting. Just fact.
"I get that a lot."
"Six hours ago, you had a dozen wounds. Gunshots. Stab wounds. Blood loss that should've killed you twice." She leans forward. "Now you're sitting up. Scars where holes used to be. Explain."
I could lie. Deflect. Make excuses.
Instead: "I can't."
"Can't or won't?"
"Both. I don't fully understand it myself. And the parts I do understand—I'm not sure you want to know."
She studies me. Cop eyes. Analyzing. Deciding.
"Twenty-three bodies," she finally says. "We counted. Out of thirty-plus that came here. We're calling it a gang war. Eastern European criminals settling territorial disputes. Wrong place, wrong time. We defended ourselves."
"And the state police bought that?"
"They're buying it. Helps that the deceased all have criminal records. Helps that we have Job scrubbing digital evidence. Helps that you, Lucas, and I all tell the same story." She stands. Paces. "But I saw what you did. How you moved. How fast you healed. That's not training. That's not luck. That's something else."
"I know."
"And you're not going to explain."
"Not today. Maybe not ever. Some secrets—" I stop. Search for words. "Some secrets protect both of us. You don't want to know. Trust me."
"I don't trust you. But I trust that you saved our lives. That counts for something." She moves toward the door. Stops. "Lucas is outside with Carrie. Sugar's handling cleanup. State police left an hour ago. It's over."
"For now."
"You think they'll send more?"
I think about Mr. Rabbit. About a father who spent fifteen years searching for his daughter. About thirty dead men who won't report back.
"Yeah. They'll send more."
She nods. Expected that answer. "Then we prepare. Together. Whatever you are—we need it."
She leaves.
I dress slowly. My clothes are ruined—bloodstained, torn. Sugar left clean ones on a chair. Deputy uniform. Pressed. Ready.
I change. The movements are stiff. My body is rebuilt but not recovered. Healing isn't the same as rest.
The main bar is empty. Morning light streams through bullet-shattered windows. The floor is clean—bodies removed, blood scrubbed. But the damage is obvious. Bullet holes in walls. Broken glass. Overturned furniture.
Evidence of war in a small-town bar.
Lucas sits at the counter. Coffee in hand. He sees me. Nods.
"You look like hell," he observes.
"I feel worse."
"Good. You should. What you did last night—" He shakes his head. "I've seen a lot. Prison. Combat. Street fights. Never saw anything like that."
"Sorry."
"Don't apologize. You saved us. Saved Carrie. Saved the town." He pours me coffee. "But we need to talk about what you are. Eventually."
"I know."
The bunker door opens. Carrie emerges. She looks tired. Scared. But whole.
She sees me. Crosses the room. Doesn't speak. Just pulls me into a hug.
I freeze. Don't know how to respond. Not used to physical affection that isn't violence.
"Lucas told me," she says quietly. "What you did. Fighting their commander alone. Killing him." She pulls back. Looks at me. "You're the reason we're all alive. I won't forget that."
A debt acknowledged. Weight accepted.
"Just doing my job," I say.
"Your job is being a deputy. What you did last night—that was something else." She returns to Lucas's side. "Thank you. Whatever you are. Thank you."
Sugar appears from the back. Carrying plates. "Eggs. Toast. Bacon. Everyone eats. No arguments."
We sit. Eat in silence. The food is slightly burnt. No one complains.
Being alive makes everything taste better.
"What happens now?" Carrie asks.
"Now we wait," Lucas says. "See how Rabbit responds. Prepare for the next round."
"And if he comes himself?"
"Then we deal with that too." Lucas looks at me. "Right?"
I think about last night. About Phase 3 Violence Mastery. About Pain Conversion pushing limits. About Regeneration rebuilding me from near-death.
I'm stronger than I was. More capable. More dangerous.
But I'm also more exposed. More watched. More questioned.
The wolf inside me has been seen. Can't hide it anymore.
"Right," I agree. "We deal with it."
We finish eating. Carrie returns to the bunker—she'll stay hidden until Gordon and Deva can come home. Until some semblance of normal returns.
Lucas goes to coordinate with state police. Final reports. Official statements.
Sugar cleans. Methodical. Professional. Like this isn't the first time he's scrubbed blood from his bar.
I stand at the window. Watch Banshee wake up. People emerging. Going about their day. A few stop to stare at the damaged bar. Most just continue on.
They don't know how close they came. Don't know what defended them.
Maybe better that way.
Siobhan joins me. Doesn't speak. Just stands beside me. Two survivors watching the sunrise.
"I have questions," she finally says.
"I know."
"I'm not asking them today."
"I know."
"But eventually—"
"Eventually, you'll get answers. When I figure out how to give them."
She accepts that. For now.
The sun climbs higher. Light spills over streets I helped defend. Over a town that doesn't know my name or what I did.
But I know. And Lucas knows. And the others who fought beside me.
That's enough.
For now.
My phone buzzes. Text from Job: News is reporting gang violence. Twenty-three dead, multiple wounded. No mention of supernatural deputies. Cover holds. Good work.
I text back: Thanks for the assist.
Anytime. Though preferably with less dying.
I almost smile.
Lucas returns. Sees me at the window. Joins me.
"Rabbit will send more," he says. Not a question.
"I know."
"You ready?"
I consider my scarred hands. My rebuilt body. My growing powers. The wolf that's been awakened and can't be put back to sleep.
"I will be."
"Good." He pauses. "Ben? What you did last night—saving all of us. That wasn't just duty. That was—"
"Pack," I say. "You're my pack. I protect what's mine."
He nods. Understands. "Yeah. Pack."
We stand together. Two criminals wearing badges. Two men who just survived the impossible.
Behind us, Banshee continues waking. Unaware. Safe.
Ahead of us, threats are rebuilding. Rabbit won't accept this loss. Won't forget.
But that's tomorrow's problem.
Today, we survived.
Today, the wolf proved what it can do.
And tomorrow, when the next threat comes, we'll be ready.
The hunt never ends.
But neither do the hunters.
