As the bell rang for lunch, the classroom burst into life, chairs scraping and chatter rising.
"Yah, Kang Daewon!" Jimin grinned as he slung an arm around Daewon's shoulder. "You romantic guy. That photo - was it about a certain blue-themed girl, hmm?"
Daewon choked. "What - No - It's just a picture."
"Uh-huh," Jimin said, dragging the words out with a smirk. "You just happened to catch a perfect candid of Yoo Aera under her umbrella, in soft lighting, with falling petals and poetic vibes?"
Daewon's ears turned a deep red. "I didn't even submit it. She did."
Aera, still seated with her lunchbox unopened, turned slightly at the sound of her name. Her eyes met Daewon's again. This time, her smile was shy, gentle.
He looked away first.
Minji, who had been quietly peeling a tangerine, leaned toward Aera with a playful whisper. "You picked that photo on purpose, didn't you?"
"I just thought it was...beautiful," Aera said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "That moment felt real."
Minji didn't tease further. Instead, she just smiled and passed Aera the sweeter half of the tangerine.
After school, the sky glowed with the faded gold of a spring afternoon. Daewon walked slowly, backpack slung lazily on one shoulder. His fingers brushed the contest envelope in his pocket - the one with the certificate inside.
He didn't care much for awards. But he did care that the moment he captured meant something to someone. Especially to her.
He turned a corner and stopped.
Aera was there, waiting near the school gate, her blue umbrella - folded - resting against her shoulder, even though the sky was clear.
She glanced up. "Hi."
"You waited?"
"I thought maybe we could walk together." She looked away quickly. "Just...as thanks. For the photo."
They walked side by side down the quiet street, shoes tapping gently against the pavement. The breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers. Children's laughter echoed from a nearby park.
Aera spoke first. "Do you remember that day? When it rained?"
"Of course," Daewon said. "I think about it more than I should."
She gave a soft laugh. "You were so quiet, hiding behind your sketchbook."
"And you were painting the sky blue."
They fell into silence again, but this time, it was warm.
"I didn't know you were looking at me like that," Aera said.
Daewon glanced at her. "I didn't know you'd keep the photo."
Aera slowed her steps and turned slightly, brushing hair behind her ear. "It felt like someone finally saw me. Not just...as Yoo Aera, but me. That photo made me feel real."
Daewon's heart clenched in a way he couldn't describe. "You are real to me."
They stood still for a long second.
And then, Aera smiled - soft, blue, quiet like the sky before dusk.
The streetlights flickered on as the sun dipped past the rooftops, painting the neighborhood in soft orange and lavender hues. The world was quieter now - no rushing students, no bustling bikes - just two shadows walking side by side.
Daewon still held his phone in his pocket, his hand brushing against it nervously. He'd snapped a few pictures during their walk: the way the sky looked behind her, the light on the side of her cheek. She hadn't noticed - or at least, pretended not to.
When they reached the split in the road, that familiar hush settled again. The silence that used to feel awkward now felt... gentle.
Aera looked up at him, brushing her hair behind one ear. "Thanks for walking with me today."
He nodded. "Anytime."
A tiny smile curved her lips. "You always say that."
"Because I mean it."
Their eyes met. And for a second, it felt like they were suspended in that moment - the stillness of a warm evening, the soft hum of summer starting to creep in, and the space between them full of something unsaid but understood.
Then, Aera tilted her head slightly. "Hey, Daewon."
"Yeah?"
"If someone asked you to choose your favorite photo… just one, out of all the ones we took, what would you pick?"
He hesitated. Then slowly, he took out his phone and unlocked it.
"This one," he said, turning the screen toward her.
It was from the day she had turned to smile at the lake during the scavenger hunt - the sun lighting up her hair, her eyes full of laughter, her cheeks glowing.
Aera stared at it, speechless.
"I didn't even know you took this…"
Daewon looked a little sheepish. "I wasn't going to show anyone. It's kind of... just mine."
She bit her lip softly, her cheeks turning a delicate shade of pink. "It's a nice picture."
"I think it's my favorite moment," he said, voice low. "From the whole trip."
A long, fluttering pause.
Aera clutched the strap of her bag. "Then I'm glad I looked back."
Daewon blinked. "What?"
"That day," she said, softly. "By the lake. I was going to keep looking at the water, but I turned around. I don't really know why. Just… I felt like someone was looking. And I'm glad it was you."
He didn't say anything. His heart was too loud in his ears. She gave a tiny bow of her head, then started walking down her road.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Daewon," she said over her shoulder.
"…Yeah. See you."
And just like that, she was gone. But her presence lingered like the scent of jasmine after dusk.
That night
Daewon lay in bed, phone clutched to his chest.
The photo contest results wouldn't come until next week. But in his mind, he already knew which photo had won.
Not for the school. For him.
He opened his sketchbook, flipping to a blank page. Then, he started drawing. Not the lake. Not the scenery.
Her smile. That moment.
Meanwhile, across town, Aera sat by her bedroom window, knees hugged to her chest. The stars blinked quietly overhead.
She pulled out her notebook and scribbled something in the margins between her notes.
> Favorite photo:
By the lake, sunlight in my hair, looking back. I didn't know he saw me like that.
Her lips curled into the smallest smile.
And so, while the contest was still undecided, their hearts already knew what mattered most.
It wasn't the perfect photo.
It was the person behind the lens.
Late that night — on the phone
Aera's phone buzzed beside her pillow.
[9:42 PM – Daewon]
> Hey...
Did you get home okay?
She stared at the screen, her heart doing that little flutter again.
[9:43 PM – Aera]
> I did. You? :)
A beat.
[9:43 PM – Daewon]
> Yeah.
I was just... thinking about earlier.
[9:44 PM – Aera]
> Which part?
[9:44 PM – Daewon]
> When you said you were glad you looked back.
That kind of stayed in my head.
She stared at his message for a long second before replying.
[9:46 PM – Aera]
> I meant it.
It felt like the kind of moment you don't want to forget.
[9:47 PM – Daewon]
> Same.
Then, a pause. She could almost see him hesitating.
[9:48 PM – Daewon]
> I don't know what's gonna happen with the contest…
But whatever picture they pick, yours is still the one I remember most.
Aera smiled quietly into her pillow.
[9:49 PM – Aera]
> Is it weird if I say…
I think I feel the same?
Daewon read the words three times before answering.
[9:50 PM – Daewon]
> Not weird. Just really, really nice.
And then:
[9:51 PM – Aera]
> Sleep well, Daewon.
Dream of something good.
[9:52 PM – Daewon]
> I will. I already am.
She stared at that last message long after the screen dimmed.
And somewhere between that heartbeat and the next, she fell asleep smiling.
