Their pursuers had to choose. Liora watched through the back window as the three trucks hesitated at the intersection, then split up, two following Marcus, one staying on their tail.
"We've still got one," she said.
"I know." Thessian pushed the SUV harder, the engine roaring. "Hold on."
The next twenty minutes were a blur of high-speed driving through mountain roads, hairpin turns taken too fast, straightaways pushed to dangerous speeds, the pursuing truck staying stubbornly on their tail.
Then, finally, they hit the interstate. Real traffic. Other cars. Witnesses.
The pursuit truck fell back immediately, not willing to risk exposure in public view.
Thessian merged into traffic, slowed to a normal speed, and exhaled slowly.
"We're clear," he said. "For now."
Liora realized she'd been gripping the door handle hard enough to hurt. She forced her hands to relax. "They'll figure out where we went eventually."
