Chapter 2 - The Space That Should Not Exist

CHAPTER 2: The Falling Silence (Revised)

The darkness did not disappear—it transformed.

At first, it felt like nothing more than a shift in pressure, as if the empty void around Kael had begun to breathe. Then the space itself fractured. Thin cracks of dim grey spread across the endless black, widening slowly until fragments of ground forced themselves into existence beneath his feet.

Kael stumbled as the surface formed—rough, uneven stone grinding into place like a broken world trying to rebuild itself. The void receded, not entirely, but enough to reveal something far more unsettling.

A landscape.

Barren and jagged, stretching endlessly in all directions. The terrain was made of fractured rock, sharp edges jutting out at unnatural angles as though the land had once been whole and violently torn apart. In the distance, massive ruins stood in silence—remnants of structures that no longer had a purpose, their forms incomplete, eroded, or simply erased.

Above him, there was no sky in the true sense. Only a dim, fractured layer of grey, like a ceiling that wasn't meant to exist. There was no sun, no visible source of light, yet everything remained faintly illuminated.

Kael steadied his breathing, his eyes scanning the unfamiliar world.

"...This is Echoverse?"

The response came instantly, cold and precise.

[Affirmative]

He narrowed his eyes, taking a slow step forward. The ground felt heavier than it should have, as if each movement required more intent.

"This place... it's destroyed."

[Correction: It is incomplete]

A faint wind passed through the ruins, dry and unnaturally cold. It carried no sound, no life—just emptiness.

Kael's expression hardened slightly.

"Why bring me here?"

There was a pause this time. Not long, but noticeable—like the system was deciding how much to reveal.

[Primary Function: Training Environment]

Kael frowned.

"Training?"

The word lingered in his mind, heavier than it should have been. He looked out at the broken terrain again, then back at his hand where the black fragment remained embedded in his fist, faintly pulsing beneath the skin.

"Training for what?"

Silence followed.

For a brief moment, nothing responded. The wind stilled, and even the distant ruins seemed to lose what little presence they had.

Then—

[Host has established link with Void]

The air shifted slightly.

[Void-linked entities are subject to external convergence events]

Kael exhaled slowly, irritation slipping into his voice.

"Say it in a way that makes sense."

Another pause.

Then—

[Things will come for you]

The simplicity of the answer made it worse.

The wind stopped completely.

Kael didn't move.

"And this place?"

[This environment enables preparation]

A faint vibration passed through the ground beneath him—subtle, but real enough to feel.

[Failure to adapt will result in termination]

No emotion. No hesitation. Just fact.

Kael let out a slow breath, his gaze drifting across the ruins once more.

"So I don't get a choice."

[Negative]

The answer came immediately.

The silence that followed felt heavier than before.

Kael clenched his fist. The fragment embedded in his hand pulsed once in response, as if acknowledging his decision before he even made it.

"…Then start."

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the air changed.

It wasn't visible at first—only a distortion, like pressure building in a space that shouldn't hold it. The ground beneath him cracked faintly, thin lines spreading outward. A shadow stretched unnaturally across the rocks, moving despite the absence of any light source.

Kael's body tensed instinctively.

The world itself seemed to lean toward him.

[Training Sequence Initiated]

The weight of the environment increased suddenly, pressing down on him from all directions.

Something was coming.

And this time—

it wasn't going to wait.
