Seeing the father and daughter—who were dressed normally, but with one looking somewhat anxious and the other staring at him with a mix of curiosity and hostility—Hunter took the initiative to speak calmly, "Come in and let's talk."
After speaking, he stepped aside to let Damon and his daughter inside.
"Thank you," Damon's lips moved, and he finally managed to say those words of thanks.
After inviting the father and daughter in, Hunter casually closed the door. He then walked over to the refrigerator, opened it, and took out a few bottles of juice and soda.
"I just got back. I do not have any beer in the house, only these." Hunter placed the juice and soda in front of the father and daughter. Because of their last encounter, he no longer had much interest in them. However, he still understood basic hospitality.
"Thank you!" Mindy's eyes lit up, and she immediately grabbed a bottle of juice.
Just as she was about to twist it open and drink, her father glared at her. The small smile that had just appeared on her face instantly froze.
Hunter found it amusing. Right in front of them, he twisted open one of the bottles, tilted his head back, and took a big gulp. Only then did he say, "Relax, there is no poison inside, and there are no sleeping pills either."
An unnatural look appeared on Damon's face. He was indeed quite wary. Because of his past experiences, Damon now trusted absolutely no outsiders except for his daughter, Mindy.
However, the handsome Asian young man claiming to be an assassin sitting in front of him had recently killed the major drug lord Frank—the man Damon had wanted to take down for over a decade. He had even cut off the man's head and presented it to him as a gift.
Although the young man had acted on Telly's behalf, Damon had seen the news afterward. Frank lived on the top floor of a five-star hotel in Queens, New York. And inside that hotel, he had stationed dozens of bodyguards.
Although Damon had long been dedicated to striking at Frank's drug empire and trying to find his lair, after reading the news, he had to admit that without Hunter's intervention, it would have been nearly impossible. Even if he had found Frank at the Paris Hotel, trying to deal with him relying only on himself and his daughter would not have been easy. In fact, it was highly likely that both father and daughter would have died there.
Thinking back to the attitude the two of them had shown the young man that night, even though Damon's personality had become somewhat twisted by hatred over the years, he still possessed a basic sense of right and wrong.
"Apologies for our lack of manners," Damon said. He accepted a bottle of soda, twisted it open, and also took a sip.
Seeing this, Mindy finally twisted off her cap and gulped down half the bottle in one breath. The little girl, who had grown up under her father's strict discipline, instantly had her eyes curve into beautiful crescents. It was obvious that Mindy, who was still just a ten-year-old girl, really loved soda. It was just that Damon must have strictly forbidden her from touching such things in the past, so the little girl had only been able to endure it.
Burp!
As Mindy let out a burp, the atmosphere in the apartment seemed to become less tense.
Hunter took a few more sips and casually placed his drink aside. Damon only took one sip; he didn't care for such things anyway. The only reason he had taken a sip just now was to show his goodwill.
Seeing Hunter put down his bottle, Damon immediately asked, "Last time, we were out of line. May I ask your name? How is Telly doing now? Is she..."
Damon seemed to have many things he wanted to ask, but for some reason, the words caught in his throat.
Seeing that his attitude was much better than last time, Hunter figured they were Telly's father and sister after all. His expression softened slightly as he answered, "My name is Hunter. After I rescued Telly, because she lacked other life skills, she stayed by my side."
"I also own a few farms in the city of Pomona, a few dozen kilometers away. She is living there right now."
Hearing this, Damon's breathing grew heavy. "Take me to see her!" he practically shouted, though trying to suppress his voice.
Hunter glanced at the sky outside and realized it was still only just noon. So he nodded. "Alright."
"But I haven't mentioned you to Telly yet. Once we get to the farm, do not scare her."
"Okay, I promise you," Damon agreed immediately.
Beside them, little Mindy just rolled her big eyes and looked at Hunter. The hostility and wariness in her eyes had mostly dissipated after finishing the bottle of juice.
Seeing this, Hunter handed her another bottle. At the same time, he said to Damon, "My car is in a nearby parking lot. Let's go."
He covered for Mindy, and the little girl was indeed smart. She quickly reached out, took the soda, and held it tightly in her hand without letting go.
Damon saw it, but his mind had already flown to the farm. Seeing this, he didn't say much. He nodded, and the three of them soon went downstairs.
Hunter didn't ask how Damon knew he had returned. Not long ago, when he came back to the apartment, he had felt eyes on him. At the time, Hunter guessed the gaze belonged to Damon and his daughter. Plus, he hadn't felt any hostility, so he hadn't paid much attention to it.
Hunter led the father and daughter to the nearby parking lot. This rented apartment was essentially one of his safe houses. After he stopped worrying about money, Hunter had bought several used cars. After modifying them, he kept one parked permanently in a lot near here, just so he could use it whenever needed.
A car that hadn't been driven in a long time inevitably gathered a lot of dust. But Hunter didn't care, and Damon and his daughter's minds were elsewhere too. So no one paid it any mind.
After starting the car, they headed toward the city of Pomona.
An hour and a half later, the car stopped in front of a farm located within Pomona's city limits. Hunter got out and opened the tightly closed farm gate.
At the same time, he took out his phone and dialed Telly's number. After buying up all the neighboring farms, Hunter had spent over two hundred thousand dollars to hire a telecommunications company to install a small cell tower on the farm. As a result, there was now a strong cellular signal covering the area.
After telling Telly he was back and already at the farm, Hunter hung up. He glanced in the rearview mirror at Damon, who looked like he wanted to say something but held back, smiled, and drove the car into the farm.
Driving forward for less than two kilometers along a dirt road, Damon and Mindy soon saw a young woman appear in their line of sight.
It was Telly!
