Chapter 238 - The World That Calls Him

Tenten knew Kakashi-sensei was not dead. After all, no one in the world could ignore the name Hatake Kakashi, the most wanted criminal in existence. He had assassinated the Fourth Raikage. From that moment on, every great nation hunted him, and bounty hunters whispered his name like a forbidden treasure, too dangerous to touch, too valuable to ignore.

But Tenten never saw him again. And as his notoriety spread, conditions inside the prison gradually improved. Only one thing didn't change. Neji was never reassigned.

When news arrived that the Raikage had been assassinated, Tenten was promoted to prison overseer. When news came that the Hokage had been severely injured, medical supplies quietly appeared in the inventory. When the Daimyo of the Land of Fire suddenly died in his home, hostages were relocated to an abandoned, emptied library. When Land of Earth's most likely Tsuchikage candidate, Kurotsuchi, died in battle, winter clothing arrived from Konoha. When Kirigakure's elite jonin Ao was reported dead, Neji ordered the public bathhouse repaired. It was as if every death in the outside world quietly reshaped the inside.

That night, winter tightened its grip. Snow fell all day, and by evening, it became a blizzard. The library windows had shattered long ago from war damage. Tenten had patched them with cardboard, but the wind still forced its way in, dragging snowflakes through the cracks. Outside, fireworks lit up the sky. It was New Year's Day. Neji had returned to Konoha the day before. Only twenty ANBU and Tenten remained.

Tenten was lying on the floor, trying to fix a broken window panel, when a sudden force from outside pushed it open. She slipped and fell. "Ugh, who doesn't knock."

A familiar lazy voice cut her off. BOOM. "Yo. Sorry, sorry. Didn't see you there."

Tenten froze. She looked up. A white mask. Silver hair. That careless posture. Kakashi. "Ka, Kakashi-sensei!!!" Tenten's voice cracked.

Kakashi scratched his head lazily, eyes curved into his familiar crescent smile. "Mm, long time no see."

Tenten rushed forward and hugged him tightly. "I knew it! I knew you weren't dead! Sensei, where have you been?! You didn't send any message at all, I was so worried!"

Kakashi spun her lightly in a circle, still smiling. "Sorry, sorry. Busy with some things." Then his tone shifted slightly. "Your eye, what happened?"

Tenten froze. I can't explain that. She shook her head. "It's an old injury." Then she forced a smile. "More importantly, sensei, why are you only coming back now?"

Kakashi tilted his head. "Well, it's New Year." He glanced around the room. Faces he recognized. Tenten. Karin. Shizune's former aide. The caretaker. He waved casually. "Come here. I need to talk to you." He turned and walked out. No hesitation. No pause.

"Wait, Kakashi!" Tenten grabbed his sleeve. But he kept walking. Even when voices called him, "Ka, Kakashi!" Even when someone stepped in front of him, he did not stop.

Then Karin threw a nail at him. Not to harm. Just to force attention. "Hey, Kakashi. Why are you back?"

Kakashi smiled. "Mm, just checking if you all are still alive." A pause. Then, "Or if you're busy dying without me."

Silence fell instantly. No one spoke again. Outside, snow fell harder.

Kakashi handed Tenten over a stack of sealed scrolls. "Sorry. This is partly my fault." Tenten shook her head violently, unable to speak.

He continued anyway. "I can't stay long. There's food, supplies, enough for now." His voice softened slightly. "Neji won't be coming back. You'll have to handle things." Then he paused. "Sorry."

Tenten held the scrolls tightly. "I'll protect them! I promise!"

Kakashi tapped her forehead lightly. "Protect yourself first." If you fall, I won't find another replacement like you.

Tenten nodded desperately. Tears filled her remaining eyes.

Kakashi sighed. Then wiped her tears. "You're part of this because of Guy, I'm sorry for dragging you in." Tenten didn't understand. But she nodded anyway.

Kakashi's expression turned serious. "Tenten. Listen carefully." His hands rested on her shoulders, one warm, one cold. "You know nothing. Everything you do is humanitarian aid. Treat them as protected prisoners. That's all."

Tenten shook her head. "No, I."

Kakashi pressed harder. "This is bigger than you. If you get involved too deeply, you'll be destroyed." His voice lowered. "I can't let Guy's student be ruined because of me."

Tenten began crying. Loudly. Helplessly. "I don't know! I don't understand! I don't want this!"

Kakashi's eyes hardened. "You don't get to choose." Then, "I'm already dead once. I have nothing left to lose."

A voice interrupted. "Someone's coming." Pakkun appeared beneath his cloak.

Kakashi nodded. Then released Tenten. He mounted a clay bird. Before leaving, he said one last time: "Remember what I said." And then, he vanished into the snowstorm.

Tenten stood frozen. Clutching the scrolls. Alone again.

War restarted. Iwagakure and Kumogakure withdrew from the Allied Shinobi Forces. Skirmishes erupted along the old Land of Frost border. The Fifth Raikage sought alliance with Konoha. The Sixth Hokage agreed. Old debts resurfaced. Old sins were exchanged for gold, land, and silence.

Alliance after alliance shifted like falling dominoes. Until every village chose a side. Until the world no longer pretended to be at peace.

And at the center of every rumor, every disaster, every treaty, every massacre, was the same name.

Hatake Kakashi.
