Chapter 1 - chapter 1

The world is so loud, but I can't join in. No one wants to waste their time on a mute girl. I'm 17, and I don't have any friends, and I've never had a boyfriend. I'm an only child, and my foster parents are always distant and never home. My life is very lonely.

I sit in my assigned seat in my first class of the year, pull out my sketchbook, and wait for the teacher to come to class. I sit there for five minutes trying to figure out what to draw, and a piece of paper hits my back. I turn to see a bunch of kids laughing and pointing at me. I don't get what is so funny about hitting me with paper. I don't bother to pick up the paper or listen to the kids. I turn back to my paper and start to draw a tree.

A few minutes later, the teacher walks in with a big smile. He's wearing a nice casual suit and dress shoes. I try not to roll my eyes. 'That smile is so fake. I hope he doesn't make me stand up in class to tell everyone about me. I can't talk.' The teacher's eyes find mine.

"Ah, yes, the new student. Could you come up here and tell the class your name and some things about you?"

I hesitantly make my way up to the front of the room with my phone. The teacher gives me a weird look when he sees me carrying my phone. 'Did no one tell him that I'm mute?' I stand next to the teacher and turn on my phone. Lots of kids in the classroom were protesting, wondering why I could have my phone out and they couldn't.

I typed into my phone, "My name is Emily Williams, and I am mute. I like reading and drawing." The robot voice on my phone rang in the silence. No one talked, no one moved, and it seemed like no one was breathing. Then there was a lot of commotion all at once. The teacher looked at me with pity; it was so annoying when people pitied me. I smiled with fake politeness.

The teacher allowed me to return to my seat. I was originally sitting by myself in the back, but as I walked back to my seat, a beautiful boy with dark brown hair and blue eyes sat at the desk next to mine with a huge smile on his face. His eyes were so captivating, and it seemed easy to get lost in them. I sat down and typed out a quick 'hi,' thinking I might as well be civil with this intriguing boy.

I turned the volume down on my phone and typed, "What's your name, mystery boy?" He laughed quietly, "My name is Lucas Mazur. I didn't think I was that mysterious."

I smiled and typed, "Well, I think that's for you to know and me to find out." I was happy that he seemed patient with the whole typing thing. We talked all through class and he walked me to my next class. I waved and entered my history class.
