Chapter 9 - Lesser D-Grade Zombies

-BAM!

-BAM!

-BAM!

Reaching closer to the gate of the supply room, the metallic noise became clear enough to pinpoint its location in the room. A little to the right, near the corner. Peeking into the room through the open door, as I suspected, some zombies were trying to enter a large metallic storage.

Somebody was in there. I concluded.

Skipping the supply room was out of the question. It had too many things that I could use later. But on the other hand, I also pondered whether I could take that many zombies on my own.

All of them at once is suicide, but… can I attract a few of them at a time? Let's try that.

Honestly, I believed even that would be too much for me. But then again, with these increased stats, I don't think I know my full capabilities yet. In fact, it was also a great chance to test my stamina and limits.

Though just for the sake of safety, I decided that if I attracted over 4 at once, I would run away. There doesn't seem to be a D-Grade among them either.

My eyes widened for a brief second as I rapidly used [Inspect] on all the zombies one at a time.

Sure enough, all of them were E-Grade.

"Phew… almost gave me a heart attack," I chuckled slightly, sighing in relief. Then, taking out an empty water bottle, I lightly threw it at the zombie on the far back of that group.

The water bottle made an arc, hit the zombie…

-Pat!

…and attracted it along with the one beside it before falling to the ground.

Both the zombies slowly turned in my direction before taking a step towards me.

"Come on now. I don't bite," I said in an inaudible voice as I walked back slowly while the zombies followed me, first out of the room and then about 20 meters away from the supply room door.

-BAM!

-BAM!

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

-BAM!

-BAM!

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

Repeating what I had done before, I killed them swiftly… Well, not exactly swiftly, but it was close.

To fetch more zombies, turning back to the supply room as I walked a few steps, I noticed another zombie, all by himself, walking out of there before he turned towards me and continued walking in my direction.

"Good zombie," I smiled.

-BAM!

-BAM!

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

With three done, I looked into the supply room at the other zombies. Counting them, there were 6 more left. I pondered for a few seconds before nodding as I began luring them as well.

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

[You have killed an E-Grade Zombie!]

About 20 minutes later, I looked at the piled-up bodies of the zombies in the hallway. Sitting on the ground to catch my breath, I then turned to look at the level up bar with a slight smile.

It's hard, but looking at it being filled up sure feels good.

While survival was one thing, the gamified aspect of the system made it more of a thrilling experience than a horror one. Despite the creepiness of the surroundings, it was fun.

I then put down the completely bent crowbar on the ground beside me, before standing up on my two feet. It was a shame to let it go, but I didn't have the tools required to fix it anew. Plus, I don't think I can carry it with me after filling the entire bag with the items from the storage.

Sorry, pal. It was a good run. I said, saluting the crowbar before entering the supply room.

The first gaze was at the metallic storage in which the zombies were trying to get in. But before moving towards that, I began searching the containers to look for a weapon. Arming myself was the highest priority above everything else.

"Found it!" I said with ecstasy at the item in front of me.

[Surgical Instrument: Amputation Saw

Attack: 15

Durability: 50/50]

It was a sharp saw I can use, along with a bunch of osteotomes, that can serve as knife replacement. The best parts about these weapons were their sterile nature and, obviously, sharpness. They were objects tailor-made to cut flesh and bones.

Anything else I could take… I looked around, searching for more.

There were surgical scissors, sharp instruments, and some sewing materials I put inside the bag. While their main purpose was indeed as a weapon, I put in a few extra just in case somebody needed suturing in the future.

Not gonna let these surgical skills go to waste.

It's already filled, huh?

A few moments later, I saw the bag filled to the brim, with about 20% of the needed materials still on the table beside it. And I wasn't even counting the stuff in the storage room.

It was a dilemma.

"Well. I should at least check in the metallic container first," I thought as I reached there. I was 90% sure that it was a human inside, while 10% of my mind believed that he or she was almost zombified. Anyway, moving closer to it, I began praying to the best of my ability.

Please do not be an old man. Please do not be an old man.

-Tiiiinnnn…

The container opened up, revealing the face of a familiar person. Somebody I knew.

"Mira?"

Mira was one of my juniors, currently in her first year as a resident surgeon. She was one of the sharpest kids in her batch, but on the other side, she was also a lazy bum who only did the bare minimum. She reminded me of the few students who lazed around all year, only to get the top ranks in the exam after studying overnight.

Always hated that bunch. I complained a little.

After working hard all year round, seeing that those who had fun all the time easily scored in the top 10 made me wonder if I was doing something wrong with my life.

It wasn't a great feeling at all.

Focusing back on Mira, I noticed the tear stains all over her cheeks. Perhaps she was so scared that she cried herself to sleep inside here. Other than that, she currently wore the blue surgeon scrubs that covered her body except her face. Even her head was covered with a head cap.

She might have focused solely on escaping. Perhaps she was too tense to notice anything else.

I nudged her body a bit. And then, seeing that she was still not waking up, I tried poking her shoulders. The poking worked fine as she slowly moved her body, until her eyes opened up, landing on me.

"Doctor Michael?" She took my name, a bit confused.

"Wake up, Snow White. It's the apocalypse," I added, making her recall the zombies before her eyes widened in fear as she jerked a little, trying to look around me for any sight of the zombies.

"Killed the ones here, but there are more around the hospital. Here, have some water." I passed down a water bottle after opening the cap. She slowly nodded as she gulped the water before I asked, "Can you walk?"

She nodded as she slowly stood up, got out of the container, and walked a few steps. I smiled as I looked at her. She, too, smiled a bit, turning red before she nodded and then said,"Thank you-"

But before she completed that, I passed the heavy bag on to her.

"Good. You can carry the bag," I added with a sigh of relief.

"…"

We can carry more items now.
