Chapter 9 - Under Another Man's Gaze

It was Annie's first day at A&R and it began with a sense of nervous anticipation she could barely contain. The office hummed quietly under the morning sun, its sleek surfaces reflecting a world that felt both exciting and intimidating. Every desk, every chair, every carefully curated artwork seemed to say one truth, that this was a world of precision, of people who moved carefully and expected the same from those around them.

She adjusted her blouse and fastened her ID badge, taking a deep breath. Today, she wasn't pretending, she was stepping fully into a world she had long dreamed about yet one that carried unspoken rules and unforseen dangers.

Marla was head of operations, She was a middle aged woman who from her dress sense you would know that she slayed in her youth. She was dressed in a very girly corporate suite that Hugs her body tightly. Marla met Annie near the elevator. "Annie, welcome," she said in a crispy manner. "I'll show you around. Just observe, ask questions, and most importantly remember, this office runs on high discipline and timing."

"Yes, ma'am," Annie replied, trying to steady her nerves as they stepped into the open office space. The layout was minimalistic yet elegant, a blend of polished wood and steel, each desk perfectly arranged. Colleagues passed by in precise, calculated steps, acknowledging her with polite nods. Now everybody seemed friendly. Annie felt herself scanning every face, memorizing names, trying to catch glimpses of Adrian but he was nowhere in sight.

Hours passed in a blur of introductions, explanations, and carefully timed tasks. Annie learned who reported to whom, how meetings were organized, and what her responsibilities would look like in practice. She took notes diligently, pretending not to be anxious.

And yet, every time she glanced at the door or toward the conference room, she asked herself... Where is Adrian?

His absence gnawed at her more than she cared to admit. She tried to focus, telling herself that today was about proving herself. But she couldn't shake the feeling that the office felt slightly off without him.

Then the subtle shift happened.

The front doors opened with a muted click, and the room seemed to pause. Annie instinctively straightened, sensing the arrival of someone new. A man stepped in, a tall, impeccably dressed, with dark, slicked-back hair and a smile that could disarm and unsettle at the same time. The office seemed to tilt toward him, not in fear, but in attention. Conversations softened. Phones lowered. Every eye discreetly tracked him.

"Annie," Marla said suddenly, gesturing toward her. "Come with me. You'll assist Mr. Leighton during his stay. Show him the office, make him comfortable, and note anything he asks for. Understand?"

"Yes, ma'am," Annie replied, her stomach tightening.

Marla left, and Annie followed Leighton, catching only a glimpse of the man's sharp gaze. Mr Leighton was checking her out even without speaking. Her pulse stopped as he tilted his head slightly, his expression unreadable but teasing in a way that set her nerves alight.

"Annie," he said, voice smooth and warm. "I hear this is your first day."

She nodded, trying to keep her composure. "Yes, sir. I… I'm ready to learn."

"Good," he said, stepping a little closer. "I like enthusiasm. But caution is equally attractive. Balance is everything in this world."

Annie's heart skipped. Attractive? She told herself to focus. This wasn't… anyone she should be thinking about in that way.

As he led her around, he didn't just introduce himself, he tested her.

"Here's the marketing team," he said, gesturing toward a group of employees. "Observe their workflow. Note their weaknesses. You'll need to understand how each part fits together."

"Yes, sir," Annie replied, jotting notes.

"And tell me," he added smoothly, leaning slightly so that his presence was intimate without crossing professional lines, "do you usually handle pressure well?"

"I do my best Sir," she answered carefully.

His lips curved in a faint, knowing smile. "Good answer. Most people overestimate themselves."

Annie felt a flutter in her stomach. She wasn't used to being teased so deliberately, especially by someone she wasn't meant to like. Why was she even thinking of liking Mr Leighton? The hours dragged forward, a mixture of structured work and subtle, persistent flirtation from Mr. Leighton. He didn't cross professional boundaries overtly, but with every glance and every complement carried weight.

"You're careful," he said at one point, stopping in front of a large window overlooking the Chicago skyline. "But there's something sharp behind that caution. I can see it in the way you carry yourself."

Annie blinked. "I try to stay focused Sir." emphasis on the "Sir"

"Focused, yes… but curious," he said, voice low and teasing. "Curiosity is dangerous. But it's also fascinating. Just don't let it get you into trouble."

She laughed nervously, straightening her blouse. "I'll try."

"And Mr Adrian?" she blurted suddenly, unable to hold it in. Her mind had wandered too far. "Where is he? I haven't seen him all day."

Leighton's smile deepened, but it didn't reach his eyes in warmth, only in intrigue. "Adrian? My boy!…" He won't be in sight again. I'm here to handle my company. But you have my attention now, don't you?"

Annie felt her pulse quicken. "What does he mean by I have his attention?" She asked herself inwardly. He must be misquoting her deliberately. His comment was teasing, almost daring, and yet it underscored the absence of the man she actually wanted to see.

She nodded, but internally her stomach knotted. So Adrian wasn't a boss or a staff in the company? Yet he carried himself like a god... She almost hissed loudly.

"Good," Leighton said, following her to the next department. "Because here, attention is everything. One misstep, one lapse, and people notice. You can't just rely on charm or smiles. You need presence, awareness… and wit."

"Yes, sir," she replied, her pen flying across the notebook, recording everything while her mind silently wondered if Adrian was testing her, watching her, or completely unaware of the storm brewing in the office. But Leighton just called him his boy!

The day moved forward, structured but intense. Annie found herself juggling tasks, arranging documents, briefing team leads, and observing Leighton's every movement. He had an uncanny way of making her feel like every glance, every gesture was a test. She could sense his attention lingering just slightly longer than usual, almost like he was measuring her reactions.

By noon, Annie was sweating profusely despite the air-conditioned office. She realized how exhausting it was to constantly be alert, to monitor her own expressions, and to interpret the man's playful remarks while staying professional.

"You're adapting well," Leighton said suddenly, leaning casually against a desk. His gaze swept over her, sharp yet amused. "Most people falter after a few hours. You… don't. That's admirable."

Annie blushed, unsure whether it was praise or a subtle tease. "Thank you, sir."

He smiled again, softer this time, almost genuine. "I enjoy people who can think on their feet. And you… have that. It's rare."

The compliment should have warmed her, but instead it made her heart pound with confusion.

As the day drew to a close, Annie's phone remained silent. The mysterious texts that had unsettled her for weeks had stopped. No cryptic messages. No warnings. Just quiet.

She heaved a deep sigh of relief, almost too loudly. The relief washed over her, but she couldn't shake the feeling that this calm was temporary. Someone had been watching or at least, she had been hyper-aware and now that nothing had come, the absence of it even felt heavier than the presence.

Leighton approached her one last time before she left, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "First day done. You survived. Not everyone does. Tomorrow… I expect even sharper focus."

"Yes, sir," she said, trying to mask the nervous flutter in her chest.

"Don't be too serious all the time," he added, leaning closer in a subtle, almost intimate way. "A little charm goes a long way here. You might be surprised who notices."

Annie swallowed, caught between nerves and curiosity. She left the office that evening with a sense of disorientation—drained from work, yet charged with tension. Adrian was still absent. The texts had stopped. And yet, the flirtatious attentions of Leighton lingered in her mind like a faint perfume she couldn't ignore.

Walking through the streets of Chicago, lights reflecting on the river and skyscrapers, Annie realized that nothing in her life had prepared her for this world. Not the pretense at the interview, not the restaurant meeting, not even her careful calculations with Sasha's advice.

This was bigger. Sharper. More unpredictable.

And in the absence of Adrian, she felt both relief and unease. Someone else was watching, teasing, and testing her in ways she hadn't anticipated.

Her first day at A&R had been a test she didn't even know she was taking. And as she stared at the city lights flickering like scattered stars, Annie knew one thing: tomorrow would demand more. More attention, more composure, more… everything.

And she wasn't sure if she was ready.
