Chapter 55 - Omake with Montaron and Xzar

Back at Beregost, after sharing with Xzar and Montaron about our victory at the Cloakwood base, I had asked Montaron on some pointers on how to get the jump on tall folk while wielding a shortsword or dagger. We practiced just outside Feldepost's, as the rest of the party watched.

Xzar was acting as our practice dummy, but we wielded wooden spoons at Xzar's insistence.

Montaron slapped his forehead. "No, no, no! Yer need to jump higher! High enough to get one arm around the face or neck to hang on before the killing blow!"

I had only managed to reach the small of Xzar's back, much less get my arm around his head to steady myself once I was up there.

"I just can't reach! He's too tall," I said, wheezing. Doing high jumps so many times was extremely tiring.

Xzar looked back at us with a sneer on his face. "I'm flattered, chums. But perhaps the problem lay in your own height. Or the lack of it."

I grit my teeth. But just then, I had a flash of inspiration. "Know what? I think I'll get it this time."

Xzar rolled his eyes, and looked forward again.

I got into position behind Xzar, who made a big show of yawning.

Let's see you laugh this off, chum.

"AIEEEE!"

Montaron's eyes widened. He walked forward and looked down at Xzar to review my work. He clicked his tongue, yet couldn't help but smile. "Aye, watching the mad wizard get his due is fun. But I can't say I approve of yer technique. 'Tis a travesty against the craft."

"They not be dead, but they do be disabled. Non-lethal, yet effective," I replied. "I consider this a win."

"GET THIS STICK OUT OF MY BUTT!" Xzar screamed.

The rest of the party face-palmed.
