Chapter 252 - Chapter 252: Father Lucas, the Holy Charlatan

"God has given us ears so that we may hear sacred hymns…

So that we may receive words of wisdom…

So that we may enjoy the beauty of music…

So that we may hear the whispers of those we love…"

Lucas paused slightly, then spoke coldly.

"You… are not worthy."

The man suddenly clutched his ears and screamed.

"No! Why can't I hear anything anymore?!

Jack! Jack! Where are you?! Help me!"

Lucas continued speaking calmly.

With each quiet declaration of "You are not worthy," he stripped the man of one sense after another—until all five senses were gone.

The other two robbers were so terrified that they wet themselves.

They collapsed onto the ground, their pants soaked.

The next moment they crawled forward and knelt before Lucas.

"Father! Father! We were wrong! Please forgive us! We'll never do it again!"

Among the onlookers, those who were religious also knelt down instinctively.

They crossed themselves and began praying toward Lucas.

---

Just then, several police officers from the town arrived.

They froze.

When they received the call earlier, they had been excited—finally something interesting might happen.

After all, the police station usually handled nothing more than petty disputes.

This town had almost no serious crime.

No gangs.

No bank robbers.

No drug dealers.

But when they arrived, they found the robbers already kneeling obediently.

One of them was rolling on the ground, crying and screaming.

Officer Layla walked forward, pulled handcuffs from her belt, and swiftly secured all three criminals before escorting them to the police car.

She sighed inwardly.

She still regretted arguing with her superior at the police academy.

Because of that incident, she had been exiled to this retirement town.

And that was exactly what the entire state called it.

In a country where police casualties were alarmingly high, this town had nearly zero crime.

It was practically a model city.

Police officers here never had to worry about their safety.

There were no bank robbers.

No drug cartels.

Even the gun shop in town had gone bankrupt due to lack of business.

The owner later reopened it as a model toy store, which ironically became extremely popular.

Because of its peaceful environment, the town had attracted many residents who simply wanted quiet lives.

Everyone knew why the town was so safe.

But nobody ever said it out loud.

The entire police station consisted of either:

• officers quietly waiting to retire safely

• or people who had offended their superiors and been sent here

Layla belonged to the second category.

Here, there was no chance for merit.

And without merit, there was no promotion.

So she had only three possible ways out:

1. Earn a major achievement and force the department to promote her

2. Swallow her pride and flatter her superiors until they transferred her

3. Quit the job entirely

She would never choose the last two.

So she made a decision.

She would earn her way out herself.

---

Layla walked toward Lucas.

"Sir, may I have your name?"

"Hello officer. My name is Lucas Reed. What can I do for you?" he replied.

"Why were those men kneeling in front of you?" she asked seriously.

Capturing a cult leader would count as a solid achievement.

"Because they made a mistake," Lucas replied calmly.

His fake priest act was starting to feel addictive.

"And how exactly did you convince three armed robbers to kneel?"

Layla was skeptical.

The man before her was tall and well-built, but his face looked extremely tired—as if he hadn't slept for days.

Her suspicion immediately increased.

"Sir, have you taken any illegal substances within the past twelve hours?"

Arresting a drug dealer would also be a notable achievement.

Lucas raised his eyes slightly.

"Relax, officer. No one dares bring that kind of thing into this town."

Again with that tone.

Layla grew increasingly irritated.

Why should one man be able to do what dozens of police officers could not?

"Given your unusual condition, I need you to accompany me to the hospital for an examination."

Lucas tilted his head.

"And if I refuse?"

Layla replied firmly:

"Then I'll have to invite you to the station for questioning."

Lucas found the situation amusing.

So he simply cooperated and followed the officer to the police car.

Elaine arranged for someone else to drive the groceries home.

"Officer," Lucas reminded her, "please be quick. My girlfriend is waiting for me to cook dinner."

"I will," Layla replied.

But she was already beginning to regret her decision.

Lucas had gotten into the car so willingly that he might actually be innocent.

If that were the case, she would owe him an apology.

---

Soon they arrived at the hospital.

After the examination, the doctor studied the results in disbelief.

"Although he looks exhausted, his physical condition is extremely healthy."

"In fact, it's stronger than most professional athletes."

Layla and her partner stared at the report.

The man who looked like he might collapse at any moment…

had the body of a super athlete.

"What exactly is wrong with you?" Layla asked.

Lucas shrugged.

"I was just a little sick recently. Nothing serious. I'll recover soon."

Then he asked politely,

"Officer, may I go home now?"

"Oh… yes."

Layla snapped back to reality and prepared to escort him out.

---

Suddenly, angry shouting erupted at the hospital entrance.

"Where is my brother?!

If you don't tell me, I'll kill every one of you!"

Lucas frowned.

Layla and her partner immediately drew their pistols.

"Get somewhere safe!" she shouted at Lucas.

Lucas nodded with a faint smile.

But inside, he was already annoyed.

He decided that whoever was causing trouble would soon learn something important:

In life, people might get one chance to make a mistake.

But in front of him—

They wouldn't get even one.

Moments later, more than ten armed men wearing body armor and carrying automatic rifles stormed into the hospital lobby.

Layla and her partner took cover behind a hallway entrance.

She immediately spoke into her radio.

"This is officer 53-L201. Armed suspects at the town hospital. At least ten individuals. Heavy weapons confirmed. Requesting backup!"

"Repeat: heavy weapons confirmed. Requesting SWAT!"

Before she finished speaking, the sheriff's voice came through the radio.

"My God, Layla… are you still half asleep? Where would we get SWAT in this town?"

"You two stay put and wait for backup!"

Layla froze.

She suddenly remembered.

The town's SWAT unit had been transferred to the neighboring county months ago—because they literally had nothing to do here.

But this could be the major achievement she needed.

Still, she understood the enormous difference in firepower.

Charging out would be suicide.

Then suddenly an idea struck her.

She leaned close to her partner and whispered something quickly.

"Our orders are to stay put!" her partner protested.

"I'm sending you away from the danger zone!" she snapped.

"Or would you rather stay here while I go?"

"Now go. Move!"

Her partner didn't argue again.

She immediately ran off down the hallway.
