Chapter 8 - Not My Enemy Today

The raiders broke from the treeline in a ragged line, a dozen of them at least, mismatched armor and worse discipline, but numbers enough to matter against two checkpoint soldiers who'd clearly never expected trouble this far from anywhere important.

"Move." Seraphine's blade was already out, the ceremonial look of it gone entirely the moment it left the sheath, replaced by something efficient and well used. "Whatever you're planning to do, do it now, or we're both going to be too busy dying to argue about my report."

Rhys didn't need telling twice.

He'd spent two days learning, slow and painful, that the Art answered better to intent than to panic, that the wolves on the road had taught him something even through the fog of the cost that came after. He reached for that same locked door, calmer this time, and found it opened easier for the practice.

The nearest raider swung a rusted blade at Seraphine's exposed side, and Rhys pushed at the rule that let the swing carry through, the simple, ordinary law that a blade in motion kept moving until something stopped it. For half a heartbeat, the blade simply forgot how to continue, hanging suspended in a way that made the raider's whole arm buckle in confused overcorrection, and Seraphine's counterstrike caught him clean before he recovered.

"Useful," she said, breathless, already turning to meet the next one. "Try not to make a habit of doing that to my blade too."

"Wasn't planning to."

The fight was short and ugly in the way real fights were, nothing like the clean, choreographed clashes from tavern stories. Rhys used the Art twice more, smaller adjustments both times, weight redistributed under a raider's charging foot, friction stolen from beneath another's boots at exactly the wrong moment, and each time the cost hit smaller too, a flicker behind his eyes instead of a lurching blank space where a memory should be. Not painless. Manageable, though, in a way that felt, for the first time, like something he might actually learn to control rather than simply survive.

By the time the last of the raiders broke and ran back into the trees, one of the two checkpoint soldiers was down with a gash along his ribs, cursing steadily through gritted teeth as his partner pressed a cloth hard against the wound, and the morning had gone from quiet mist to blood and scattered weapons in the space of a few violent minutes.

Seraphine wiped her blade clean on a fallen raider's sleeve, breathing hard, and looked at Rhys with an expression that had shifted since the treeline, something less certain and more genuinely curious underneath the caution.

"You could have run," she said. "The moment that horn sounded. You had every reason to leave me and those soldiers to deal with it alone."

"You said it yourself. You could've killed me before I even saw the checkpoint." Rhys wiped his own hands on his trousers, the tremor from the cost already fading, less severe than the night before. "Seemed rude to return the favor with a stab in the back the first chance I got."

Something almost like a real smile touched the corner of her mouth before she caught it and put it away again.

"That's not how most people who find out what you are behave."

"Most people who find out what I am haven't watched their own House kill someone I loved over it." His voice went flatter than he meant it to. "I'm not interested in giving anyone else a reason to add me to that list. Including you. Especially you, if I'm honest, since you're the one holding the report."

Seraphine was quiet for a moment, glancing back at the wounded soldier being helped toward the checkpoint gate, then back at Rhys, weighing something he couldn't read behind her composed, careful face.

"I still don't have a clean answer for what happens now," she said finally. "But I have a harder time writing 'contain and report' after watching you use that gift to protect strangers who'd never have thanked you for it, than I did an hour ago."

"Is that a yes to letting me walk past your checkpoint, then?"

"It's an offer, not a surrender." She sheathed her blade, decision settling visibly across her shoulders. "I'm required to travel on to Duvall territory regardless, to deliver a full account of whatever I find out here. If you happened to be traveling the same direction, under my authority, I wouldn't necessarily be obligated to report you as a confirmed threat before I've had time to actually decide whether you are one."

"That's a very careful way of saying you're not sure yet."

"I'm not sure yet." Her ice-blue eyes held his, steady and unflinching despite the admission. "Consider it a temporary truce. Nothing more than that. The moment I decide you're a danger to my House or anyone under its protection, this ends, and it ends badly for you. Are we understood?"

"Understood." Rhys extended a hand, half expecting her to ignore it. She didn't, gripping it briefly, firmly, her hand steadier than his still was.

They were still standing there, an uneasy truce freshly struck, when the uninjured checkpoint soldier approached, wiping blood from his hands with a grim, unsettled expression that had nothing to do with his partner's wound.

"Lady Duvall." He addressed Seraphine directly, voice low. "You should see this before we send word up the line."

He held out a fragment of armor pried from one of the fallen raiders, and Rhys leaned in despite himself, curious in spite of everything, and saw what had unsettled the man enough to interrupt them.

Stamped faintly into the metal, half worn away but still legible, was a crest neither raider nor bandit had any business wearing: a closed eye inside a broken circle, the mark, the soldier explained quietly, of House Thane's covert agents, the ones who weren't supposed to exist on official record at all.

Seraphine's expression went very still.

"That wasn't a random raid," she said slowly, turning the fragment over in her fingers. "House Thane staged this. Which means someone already knew exactly where I was standing this morning, and exactly who I'd be standing next to."
