Chapter 10 - What He Refuses to Name

The silence between them was unbearable.

Seraphina stood near the window, arms wrapped around herself, staring at the city lights far below. Chicago looked cold from this height distant, indifferent. She felt the same way inside.

Behind her, Draven hadn't moved.

His words still echoed in her mind.

I won't compromise you. Or myself.

It sounded noble. Protective.

It felt like rejection.

"You can stop acting like this is about my safety," she said quietly, without turning around. "We both know it isn't."

Draven exhaled slowly. "Then what is it about, Seraphina?"

She turned to face him. "Control."

"You hate that you can't control how this feels," she continued. "So you're pretending it doesn't exist."

"That's not fair."

"Isn't it?"

⸻

He crossed the room in long strides, stopping just short of her.

"You think I enjoy this?" he asked, voice low. "Every instinct I have tells me to shut this down. To put distance between us."

"Then why don't you?" she whispered.

Because the answer scared him.

Draven looked away, running a hand through his hair. "Because wanting you doesn't feel temporary."

The words landed like a blow to her chest.

Neither of them breathed.

⸻

That night was restless.

Seraphina lay awake, staring at the ceiling, listening to the faint sounds of movement from the living area. Every creak of the floor tightened something inside her.

She shouldn't care this much.

She shouldn't want him this badly.

But she did.

And it terrified her.

⸻

The next morning brought rain.

Cold, relentless, unforgiving.

They prepared for the final meeting in near silence. No accidental touches. No lingering glances. Just professionalism stretched thin over unspoken tension.

At the venue, Seraphina noticed it immediately.

The way people looked at her.

Not dismissive.

Speculative.

A rumor had started.

And rumors in Draven Crowe's world were weapons.

She leaned toward him during the meeting. "They're watching me."

"I know," he replied calmly. "Stay close."

That single sentence sent a dangerous warmth through her.

⸻

Elena made her move before lunch.

She cornered Seraphina near the refreshment table, expression pleasant, eyes sharp.

"You know," she said casually, "Draven has a habit of… intense attachments."

Seraphina stiffened. "I'm his assistant."

"For now," Elena replied. "But he always pulls away once things get complicated."

"Is that what happened with you?"

Elena's smile faltered.

Just for a second.

"Be careful," she said softly. "Men like him don't lose control often. And when they do, someone pays for it."

⸻

The breaking point came later.

They were in the elevator, alone for the first time all day.

The doors slid shut.

The space felt impossibly small.

"You didn't have to let her talk to me like that," Seraphina said quietly.

"I can't control what she says," Draven replied.

"But you can control what you feel?"

The elevator descended.

Slowly.

Painfully.

"I'm trying to protect you," he said.

"From what?" she asked. "Yourself?"

He didn't answer.

The doors opened.

She walked out.

He followed.

⸻

Back in the suite, the tension finally snapped.

"I won't be treated like a secret," Seraphina said, voice shaking. "Or a liability."

"You're neither."

"Then what am I to you, Draven?"

The question hung between them, fragile and dangerous.

He stepped closer.

Too close.

His voice dropped. "You're the one thing in my life I didn't plan for."

Her breath hitched.

"And that scares you?"

"Yes."

⸻

She laughed softly. "It scares me too."

For a moment, the world narrowed to the space between them.

Draven lifted a hand, then stopped himself.

"If I cross this line," he said, barely audible, "there's no undoing it."

Seraphina closed the distance herself.

"Then don't pretend you haven't already."

That was it.

His control shattered.

He didn't kiss her.

He rested his forehead against hers, breathing her in like restraint was the hardest thing he'd ever done.

"This ends badly," he whispered.

"Maybe," she replied. "But it ends honestly."

⸻

They didn't cross the line.

Not tonight.

But they stood there far too long.

And when Draven finally stepped away, his eyes held something dangerous and irrevocable.

Want.

⸻

As Seraphina returned to her room, one truth burned brighter than fear:

Draven Crowe wasn't fighting attraction anymore.

He was fighting inevitability.

And inevitability always wins.
