I did not expect her to see fast. Alice Redheart was behind the counter. Behind. The. Counter. Wearing an apron. Michael looked like he had been personally betrayed by the concept of employment.
"What." I said slowly. Is happening."
Alice turned, all soft smile and polished composure.
"Oh, Isabella. Good morning. I thought I had help. The owner and my family are acquainted."
Of course they were.
"CHAPTER 22: ALICE REDHEART'S GAMBIT - PUBLIC INSERTION PHASE ACTIVATED. ANTAGONIST HAS ENTERED PRIMARY DOAMIN."The system chimed brightly in my head.
I closed my eyes for one full second.
"You don't work here." Michael said tightly.
"Temporary assistance." Alice corrected. "Community involvement is important."
Xavier leaned against a wall, amused. Zavier's expression had gone sharp. Aiden was already scanning the room like he was mapping exits. Terrence stood very still. Alice stepped closer to me, lowering her voice just enough.
