If Ursula discovered this mess, mercy wouldn't be in her vocabulary. Regardless of whether Ivy orchestrated this whole charade, punishment under the family rules was inevitable.
Genevieve finally caved. "Fine. I'll ask."
She held back her tears, wearing the expression of someone being forced into an unthinkable betrayal.
The sight filled me with nothing but contempt. I shot Genevieve a cold look and stepped into the room.
Medicine's bitter scent hung heavy in the air. Ivy lay motionless on the bed, skin ghostly pale, eyes sealed shut.
A mocking smile tugged at my lips.
Despite the storm raging outside her door, Ivy maintained perfect composure. Her self-control was truly remarkable.
Genevieve gazed at Ivy's still form, tears gathering in her eyes again.
She moved closer, voice gentle. "Wake up, my sweet girl."
Ivy's eyes fluttered open, offering Genevieve a fragile smile. "Mother, I had the most wonderful dream. You were making my favorite chestnut cake..."
