Chapter 4 - 31 to 40

Chapter 31 – Spirit Grandmaster

Chapter 31. Spirit Grandmaster

The Star Dou Great Forest is a vast primeval woodland whose terrain ranges from mountains, lakes and rivers to wetlands and swamps. Its area rivals that of a large kingdom.

The forest straddles the two Empires of Heaven Dou and Star Luo. Because the frontier is so long, neither side can patrol it all, so Spirit Masters from both Empires may enter at will.

The Spirit Beasts inside are terrifyingly strong; the closer you get to the center, the more powerful they become.

The outermost zone is home to ten-year and hundred-year Spirit Beasts.

Further in, hundred-year and thousand-year beasts gather, and the occasional Ten Thousand Year Spirit Beast appears.

Beyond that lies the inner layer ruled by Ten Thousand Year Spirit Beasts; anyone below Titled Douluo ventures there at his peril.

At the very center is the core, also called Star Lake.

Near Star Lake dwell the Hundred Thousand Year Spirit Beasts Da Ming the Sky Azure Bull Python and Er Ming the Titan Giant Ape, along with other beasts of at least fifty thousand years and formidable Bloodlines.

To humans, this core is a Forbidden Land.

Of course, a Hundred Thousand Year Spirit Beast might in good mood stroll to the outskirts.

All in all, the forest is extremely dangerous.

Yet with so many species of Spirit Beasts, any Spirit Master strong—and lucky—enough can find a suitable spirit ring.

On a boulder at the edge of the Star Dou Great Forest sat a handsome youth of about fifteen.

He looked only twelve, face grimy, clothes shredded and blood-stained.

Above his head hovered a black pagoda more than ten meters tall; its surface drank the sunlight without the faintest glint—like a black hole.

The first floor of the pagoda stood open, and fist-sized, jade-white bees bustled in and out of a honeycomb inside.

The second floor was likewise open, yet revealed nothing—only a colorless torrent pouring out, scattering, then reassembling and flowing back in.

To the naked eye the colorless energy seemed merely to play.

Suddenly the youth—Zhou Ting grown older—opened his eyes and listened with wary caution.

A low hum…

He exhaled in relief. "Escaped at last."

Zhou Ting glanced down at the half of a fat tiger mask lying before him, picked it up and ran a finger along the smooth break, still shaken.

Who could guess a bamboo could be so terrifying?

A moment ago it had missed his head by a hair's breadth—he had felt the cold swipe of its blade.

"How does a Ten Thousand Year Spirit Beast show up where only thousand-year ones roam?"

"Maybe… because bamboo can't walk?"

He shook the thought away.

Looking up at his martial soul black pagoda, he saw it now bore two yellow hundred-year spirit rings, their depth almost equal.

Had Grandmaster or Tang San been present, both master and disciple would have cried, "Six hundred years!"

"Five years… five whole years to gain my second ring and reach rank twenty-one…"

"Xiao Wu and the rest are probably already at twenty-seven or twenty-eight."

Though far behind, Zhou Ting smiled when he watched the colorless stream dancing through the second floor.

"With you lot, I'm invincible below rank thirty."

The next instant he grimaced. "But this cultivation speed is too slow. Should've gone to Heaven Dou City and found a rich patron—money plus a Titled Douluo to guide me and fetch my rings…"

After a grumble to vent, he tossed the broken mask aside and drew a fresh fat tiger mask from his pouch.

"Uh-oh, last one."

For five years he had traveled masked; children were easy targets, but a dwarf with cold, ruthless eyes behind a cute face kept bandits away.

He pulled out a bamboo section as thick as a grown man.

"I only chopped a few of your kids' stalks—chasing me this far is petty!"

Snorting, he took a carving knife and infused it with spirit power.

Silky smooth—no resistance at all.

The blade glided through the thousand-year Spirit Beast bamboo like water; clearly he was an old hand.

The original little mask had been only a spirit tool prototype; by the second year his face had outgrown it.

He couldn't trek back to the Soul Hunting Forest market for more from that old vendor, so he made his own.

Early attempts were ugly, but wasted Materials schooled him.

Shavings flew, soon carpeting the boulder.

Thirty minutes later a new cyan fat tiger mask lay in his palm.

"Cute as ever."

He flooded it with spirit power—flash!

He had never seen that before; then again, he had never carved a mask from thousand-year spirit material.

It slid over his face without a wrinkle, smooth as silk.

He jabbed the mask with his knife—clang!

The blade shattered; a cyan needle shot out, piercing a dozen trees before fading.

Power beyond a Spirit Grandmaster's strike.

"A spirit tool?"

mental force probed—no, crafting a spirit tool isn't that easy.

Energy inside the mask had drained and the material weakened; three or four such counters remained, all passively triggered.

Interest lost, he turned to what mattered.

Eyes rose to the seventh floor; through the closed door he glimpsed the little old man.

"Summon—Soul Passing Worm!"

His second spirit ring shivered, and a colorless worm appeared, but he kept his gaze fixed on the pagoda's seventh floor.Chapter 32 – The Besieged Young Miss

Chapter 32 – The Besieged Young Miss

It appeared!

Zhou Ting could barely contain his joy—he'd just gained another trump card.

So it triggers every ten levels. Once I leave the Star Dou Great Forest, I'll recharge you.

With a casual wave, Zhou Ting sent the Soul Passing Worm Queen's phantom back into the Black Pagoda to disperse; this trick he'd figured out preserved the most energy.

A forced compromise.

He hadn't advanced sooner not because Soul Passing Worms were hard to find.

He'd only reached the twentieth-level Perfection a month ago.

Five years to gain five levels—an average of one per year. Given his earlier talent, this should never have happened.

Yet it had.

Had his talent worsened?

Had he slacked off in Cultivation?

Was there a flaw in his meditation art?

None of the above.

On the contrary, as his meditation art improved, the energy he could absorb daily kept increasing—his speed should have accelerated.

But the consumption was enormous!

What he funneled to the old man on the seventh floor was nothing. Raising spirit plants on the first floor, nurturing the bee swarm… pushing the Bee Queen to six hundred years and the average bee to a century—did anyone think that was easy?

He hadn't even tasted a drop of royal jelly for years, all so the swarm could grow.

Talk too long and the tears start falling.

But now it was over.

Zhou Ting tore off the tattered strips of cloth, revealing several fresh scars.

He didn't care; with spirit power in his body, such shallow wounds would vanish in a couple of days.

He'd just pulled a new set of clothes from his pouch when a frantic buzz reached his ears.

Someone's coming!

Zhou Ting instantly ordered, Back to the nest!

In a flash, bees and insects streamed into the pagoda gate.

The first century spirit ring on the Black Pagoda flared wildly.

Then the pagoda shrank and landed on his palm.

Young Miss, stop struggling pointlessly—come back with me.

The cat-like girl pressed her lips tight, saying nothing, only leaping faster from tree to tree.

Young Miss, why bother? I'm a forty-first-level Spirit Ancestor; you're only a Spirit Grandmaster—two Realms apart. Even with optimal spirit rings, you can't escape.

The middle-aged man stood on a branch, watching the girl below run even faster, eyes flickering with reluctance.

Eldest Young Miss, you truly set me a thorny task.

He shook his head helplessly; behind him appeared an enormous dragonfly. Four pairs of wings spread, gliding through the forest.

Hearing the familiar sound behind her, the girl clenched her teeth and sped up without looking back.

Young Miss, why torment yourself? Overloading your spirit power like this harms your body.

The voice drew closer— Bang!

The girl stared at the man now blocking her path; despair flashed in her eyes, gone in an instant, then she spoke coldly, I won't go back.

Young Miss, the Eldest Young Miss gave me orders…

Behind a boulder, Zhou Ting wasn't caught half-naked—he'd already dressed.

Nor had he revealed himself.

Originally he had no intention of interfering in this master-and-servant quarrel; quietly watching the drama sounded fine.

But the moment he saw the girl, everything changed.

Black hair spilled over her shoulders, perky beast ears on her head, and behind her—a cat tail!

Her skin was snow-white, her figure shockingly voluptuous for her age, curves enough to dizzy anyone.

Those cold eyes, that fiery body—it's her!

Feeling something at the corner of his mouth, Zhou Ting guiltily wiped it away.

Then, righteous and stern, he told himself: No, when you see injustice, you draw your blade. How could the champion of justice, Mr. Zhou, stand by and do nothing?

Zhou Ting sent his mental force into the Black Pagoda.

Buzz!

The sound acted like a starting gun; instantly, countless answering buzzes rose from every direction.

A smug grin spread across Zhou Ting's face.

In this perilous Star Dou Great Forest, his first Spirit Ability—summoning the bee swarm—had never been deactivated.

The moment he realized he couldn't avoid the scene, he'd called the bees to lie in ambush—perfect timing now.

The surrounded man, after all a forty-first-level Spirit Ancestor with keen senses, realized at once he was encircled by bees.

Not good—Jade Emperor Bees!

Seeing the swarm sealing them in from every side, the man's expression turned grave.

He was a forty-first-level Spirit Ancestor; handling century Spirit Beasts wasn't hard.

But hundreds attacking together would crush him.

He cast the girl a regretful glance, thinking, Young Miss, wait while I thin their numbers… then I'll come for you. For now, fend for yourself.

As he focused, Zhou Ting suddenly appeared behind the girl, grabbed her wrist, and ran.

Let's go!

A masked youth popping out of nowhere and dragging her toward the bees—panic flashed in the girl's eyes. She jerked hard but couldn't break free.

This is it—I'm going to die!

Then she saw something astonishing: the bees not only didn't attack, they parted to open a path.

Who are you?

Zhou Ting didn't look back. Your rescuer.

Seeing this, the man was equally shocked and realized it was his chance to break out.

Four wings on his back flapped as he shot after Zhou Ting.

Buzz!

Jade Emperor Stingers!

Whoosh—

Hundreds of Jade Emperor Bees turned into white jade needles, surrounding the man in an instant.

Such speed!

The man roared, First Spirit Ability—Windstorm!

Whoosh!

The giant dragonfly's wings vanished; four tornadoes sprang up around him, sweeping every stinger inside.

As expected of a Spirit Ancestor…

Glancing back, Zhou Ting dropped any idea of staying to fight.

By now the girl, calmer, had pulled her hand free and stood silently beside him, lost in thought.

Zhou Ting turned to the silent girl beside him and said, We'd better hurry—those bees won't hold him long.

Avoiding his hand, the girl spun away without a backward glance.

Zhou Ting rubbed his nose in embarrassment, muttering inwardly, Cold as ice… If it weren't for… I'd leave your oversized cat-self to fend for yourself.

Ten minutes later.

Fourth Spirit Ability—Endless Tempest!

Howling gales swept every Jade Emperor Bee along, smashing them into trees and ground; the encirclement was wiped out.

The man, wincing, yanked a stinger from his backside and swore through gritted teeth, Brat, don't let me catch you!

Far away, Zhou Ting hissed in a pained breath.

He wiped them out that fast… Then the pain turned to heartache.

All that energy… He could summon so many Jade Emperor Bees not solely through his own spirit power.

At merely twenty-first-level Spirit Grandmaster, summoning a thousand century Spirit Beasts would drain him dry.

In the summoning art, Zhou Ting's spirit power was only the spark; what truly sustained the swarm was the bees' own spirit power.

And once that spirit power was spent, it had to be refilled!

The refueling methods—sipping honey, Zhou Ting channeling spirit power, releasing them to gather energy themselves—were all… troublesome.Chapter 33 – Zhu Zhuqing

Chapter 33. Zhu Zhuqing

Tap… tap…

The girl stopped short, bracing her right hand against a cracked ancient tree; her body swayed, about to collapse.

"Hey—don't!"

Zhou Ting hurried forward and found the girl already sitting against the trunk. Disappointment flashed in his eyes as he withdrew his half-outstretched arms.

The girl's snow-white face was drained of color. Weakly she asked,

"Don't what?"

"I meant don't… fall."

Under her cold, scrutinizing gaze Zhou Ting felt no embarrassment; he simply sat on the ground, facing her, studying her with open curiosity.

That made the girl acutely uncomfortable.

No stranger—especially no man—had ever been this close, and how could this masked youth stare so brazenly?

Instinctively she shrank back, pressing against the bark, a flicker of pain crossing her eyes.

"Crap, I've overdrawn!"

It was the price of forcing her spirit power far beyond its limits moments ago.

Her body trembled slightly, teeth clenched, unwilling to reveal her frailty to an outsider.

Then, to her horror, the masked boy leaned in; that hateful grin drew closer and closer.

What… was he planning?

Another inch and they would… touch!

No!

Fury, shame—

Her blood surged; already at her limit, the girl fainted in spectacular fashion.

"Sigh…"

Zhou Ting caught her in time, soft warmth filling his arms—then the corner of his mouth twitched: novels really are lies.

Only when he held her did he realize the truth bore no resemblance to the stories!

Though her figure was stunning, far from what an eleven-year-old should possess,

she had been fleeing for days; her sweat had dried and re-wet countless times, and any scent had long since ceased to be sweet.

He swept his gaze across her back—no serious external injuries.

"So it's just exhaustion?"

Relief washed through him, though whether from disappointment or reassurance he couldn't say.

He summoned the Black Pagoda and thrust his right hand into the Jade Emperor Bee hive.

He'd meant to take ordinary honey, but seeing her knitted brow stirred pity.

"Consider this your lucky day."

Pulling his hand back, he ordered,

"Bee Queen, send out some royal jelly."

"Buzz-buzz!"

A volleyball-sized Worker Bee flew out, cradling a tiny pearl of white jade.

Zhou Ting pinched the girl's cheek until her mouth opened; the bee dropped the pearl inside.

It melted the instant it touched her tongue.

The royal jelly took effect, her furrowed brow visibly easing.

It worked!

He scanned the surroundings—no sign yet of the middle-aged pursuer, but he couldn't relax.

"No, this place still isn't safe."

Looking down at the girl in his arms, he hesitated, then "clenched his teeth."

"Lucky you, again."

With that he scooped her up in a princess carry and sprinted off…

Unfamiliar ceiling!

"Whoosh!"

The girl kicked away the weight on her, kipped up, claws springing from her hands, eyes wary as she surveyed the room.

"A hotel room… why am I here?"

"Creak…"

Zhou Ting pushed the door open, strolled in, and said casually,

"Where else? A hotel, of course."

Her brain rebooted; memories of the masked youth trying to take advantage flooded back, and fury flared.

A glance down—her clothes had been changed!

Even someone as cold as she couldn't stop her cheeks burning; lifeless eyes blazed with shame.

Like a nimble cat she sprang, slashing straight for Zhou Ting's head.

He'd expected it; silently he invoked,

"Second Spirit Ability—Summon Swarm!"

Instead of dodging the claws inches away, he spread his arms wide,

grinning like a long-lost friend welcoming her.

Startled by his reaction, she hesitated, her claws veering—when suddenly hundreds of invisible tiny bugs appeared, wrapping around her in an instant.

"Plop…"

She found herself against that same broad chest, the one she'd felt in her faint.

For a moment she was dumbstruck.

"Where are my claws?"

Looking down at the girl who'd literally thrown herself into his arms, Zhou Ting curved a wicked smile.

"Well now, repaying a life-saving favor with your body—I approve!"

Her snowy face flushed crimson; hands that had been claws pressed against his chest—then

"Plop!"

she slumped back into his arms, lifting her head with effort to glare at his chin and demand weakly,

"What did you do to me?"

When she'd woken moments ago her spirit power had brimmed, her body in better shape than at any time since her escape.

Yet the instant those bugs touched her, power and stamina drained fast, recovering only to drain again.

A proud 27th-ranked Spirit Grandmaster, felled in one move—utterly helpless.

These bugs were terrifying!

Instead of answering, Zhou Ting lifted her in the familiar princess carry,

set the blushing girl on the sofa, and with a wave recalled the hundred-plus invisible Soul Passing Worms to their nest.

Once the bugs left, she felt spirit power and strength slowly return.

Amazement filled her: what a miraculous Spirit Ability, what miraculous bugs—and earlier those bees as well!

Zhou Ting lounged opposite, admiring the rare sight, and asked knowingly,

"Introduce yourself—who are you?"

By now she'd calmed; at full strength she couldn't beat him, let alone now.

"Zhu Zhuqing."

As expected—her!

Cold indeed.

Though she gave only a name, Zhou Ting already knew plenty about her; one name was enough.

Zhu Zhuqing found the masked youth odd; the way he looked at her felt like… he knew her?!

But we've never met!

Feeling the clean clothes on her skin—if not for the absence of discomfort she'd have—but even so, the thought that a man had seen her body filled her with shame, and she forced out,

"Why am I here? What did you do to me?"

The Big Kitty had misunderstood.

Zhou Ting smiled cheerfully.

"Of course I…"

Zhu Zhuqing's fists clenched, murderous intent blazing in her eyes.

"…carried you out of the Star Dou Great Forest and checked us into this hotel. As for your clothes—"

Seeing she was ready to strike, Zhou Ting stopped teasing.

"—I had the landlady bathe you and change them! Did you think I did it myself?"

"Hah…"Chapter 34 – Witnessed with My Own Eyes

Chapter 34 – Witnessed with My Own Eyes

After confirming with the proprietress that she hadn't been exposed, Zhu Zhuqing regained her usual cool composure.

"Who are you? Why help me?"

Zhou Ting rolled his eyes and answered with a grin.

"Me? I'm the righteous hero who swoops in to crush tyrants and aid the weak, of course."

Zhu Zhuqing wasn't stupid; she wouldn't believe such obvious nonsense.

She fought back the urge to roll her eyes and pressed on.

"What's your name?"

"Zhou Ting."

He casually lifted the fat tiger mask from his face, revealing a handsome, youthful visage.

Surprise flashed in Zhu Zhuqing's eyes: he looked barely older than her, yet his methods were so unfathomable.

Zhou Ting poured her a cup of tea, then one for himself, and only then asked.

"Who's chasing you?"

Zhu Zhuqing stayed silent.

"Why are you in the Star Dou Great Forest?"

…Fine. Big Kitty seemed to have gone mute; she hadn't answered a single question.

Zhou Ting sipped his tea, still admiring the view in front of him, and cheerfully continued.

"Where are you headed?"

Recalling the intelligence she'd received from her Family, Zhu Zhuqing's gaze turned distant; she murmured.

"Shrek Academy…"

Zhu Zhuqing came from the Zhu Family of the Star Luo Empire.

The Zhu Family was no minor clan. During his five years of solo training, Zhou Ting had heard countless Spirit Masters speak of them.

Among common folk the Zhu Family was known as the imperial empress clan of the Star Luo Empire.

Every generation, without exception, the Star Luo Emperor's queen was a Genius daughter of the Zhu Family.

Not to mention, Zhou Ting retained memories of his past life's animations and knew even deeper secrets.

For instance, the Zhu Family's Spirit, the Hell Civet, meshed perfectly with the Dai Family's White Tiger Spirit; with a bit of practice the two could perform a Spirit Fusion… the Hell White Tiger, a massive power boost that allowed them to challenge opponents above their Rank.

Therefore, the Dai Family had always intermarried with the Zhu Family, even arranging betrothals while the princes were still very young.

However, the battle for the throne had always been extremely brutal.

Moreover, the Dai Family had an even crueler, odder rule: only one prince could emerge victorious per generation; the winner took everything.

Most losers died; the few lucky ones were stripped of their spirit power and exiled.

Zhou Ting figured such a Family… was normal.

After all, offspring from repeated generations of inbreeding were bound to be a bit off in the head!

Still, the Dai Family was merely Paranoia and arrogant; not turning into idiots was already impressive.

That was probably thanks to their inherited White Tiger Spirit.

White Tigers were light-attribute Spirits, after all—they came with a certain purifying effect.

Outside the hotel, Zhou Ting watched the aloof girl who was clearly set on leaving and asked.

"You have to go?"

By now Zhu Zhuqing had fully recovered; her Rank had even advanced a step, reaching the twenty-eighth level.

She was only eleven! That achievement wasn't the least bit inferior to Xiao Wu or Tang San.

One could imagine how fiercely Zhu Zhuqing Cultivated.

Thinking again of the person Zhu Zhuqing wanted to find… tsk-tsk!

He really deserved… to die!

Halting her steps, Zhu Zhuqing lifted her gaze to the sun in the sky and stated firmly.

"I must go there!"

With that, the girl set off once more, never looking back.

Zhou Ting folded his arms, rubbed his chin, and stared in the direction Big Kitty had vanished, then suddenly remarked for no apparent reason.

"Time to pay an old friend a visit…"

He fingered the smooth, warm pebble pendant at his chest and chuckled.

"Five years apart; Little Rabbit's going to chew me out—after all, I still owe her all that honey…"

With that, he turned and walked in the opposite direction from the girl.

"We're finally in Suotuo City!"

The speaker was a cute girl sporting pink rabbit ears; she couldn't walk properly and kept bouncing with every step.

Suddenly she complained to the ordinary-looking youth beside her.

"Big brother, who knows what Grandmaster was thinking? Several Intermediate Spirit Master academies wanted to enroll us, yet he insisted we come to this no-name Shrek Academy."

Tang San smiled dotingly and replied.

"Teacher only told me to come; he didn't force you to tag along."

"Hmph…"

Xiao Wu tossed her head proudly, ignoring her annoying brother.

She jogged ahead a couple of steps, then turned back and said.

"Big brother, I'm tired—let's find an inn…"

"Sure!"

Tang San hurried to her side, only to notice her staring fixedly at someone's back.

He waved a hand in front of her eyes, puzzled.

"Xiao Wu, what's wrong? Is something off about that person?"

Xiao Wu tilted her head, recalling the figure wearing the fat tiger mask, and murmured.

"A familiar presence…"

Tang San heard but couldn't grasp what she meant.

Standing in the busy street wasn't wise, so he pulled Xiao Wu into a nearby inn.

An ordinary inn.

Around the corner, Zhou Ting glanced back at Tang San and Xiao Wu, smiling to himself.

"Five years apart and Little Rabbit's still adorable. Tang San…"

At that point his face showed open disdain.

"Still so average, so… arrogant—some inexplicable pride!"

He gave a disdainful snort, then suddenly stopped.

"Buzz…"

His eyes lit up; he muttered excitedly.

"Well, what luck—no need for me to lift a finger…"

The Rose Hotel, lavish and romantically decorated, was filled with couples coming and going.

At the front desk, a golden-haired youth about six feet tall with double pupils had an arm around twin sisters and declared loudly for everyone to hear.

"Bring me the key to my long-term suite…"

"Ah, young master, we only have one room left…"

"Oh, then that must be the one I reserved!"

Long-term reservation?

This wasn't his first time pulling this stunt!

Outside the door, Big Kitty, whom they hadn't seen in days, watched the scene with a livid face.

She clenched her teeth, her gaze turning even icier.

"That Young Master Dai… really makes one envious!"

"Yeah, every time he brings total knockouts!"

"And they're always different…"

Listening to the surrounding gossip, Zhu Zhuqing's eyes were so cold they could freeze a man.

He'd fled the Empire, fled his Family, dodged the competition—for this!

How… could he?

"Aff…"

Just then a hand shot out from behind her and caught her wrist with pinpoint accuracy.

"Who?"

Zhu Zhuqing spun around, claws retracting, her eyes full of disbelief.

"You?"

Zhou Ting smiled and pulled her away.

Zhu Zhuqing hesitated, then followed.

After walking some distance she finally shook off his hand and asked.

"Were you following me?"

Zhou Ting shook his head.

"No, I came to see an old friend; I just happened to run into you."

Part truth, part lie!

But Zhu Zhuqing had no energy to pry; the scene moments ago had hurt her too deeply.Chapter 35 – The Power of the Soul Passing Worm

Chapter 35 – The Power of the Soul Passing Worm

Zhou Ting watched the girl's downcast face and sighed inwardly—Dai Mubai really was a piece of work.

In truth, whatever choice Dai Mubai made for himself could hardly be called unforgivable.

Zhou Ting had once put himself in Dai Mubai's shoes, facing the same hopeless straits.

If he hadn't been a transmigrator with a Golden Finger, he probably wouldn't have handled things any better.

After all, Dai Mubai's elder brother was several years older, no less gifted, and naturally far ahead in cultivation.

What could he possibly compete with?

Pure stubbornness?

Yet the guy had slipped away without a word, leaving Zhu Zhuqing alone… Still, when he calmed down and thought about it, he could understand—maybe Dai Mubai believed that by leaving he was admitting defeat, and Zhuqing wouldn't be targeted anymore.

Who knew?

None of that, however, made Zhou Ting budge.

A staunch member of the "appearance faction," he let his morals follow his eyes, and he stood firmly on Big Kitty's side.

From Zhu Zhuqing's perspective, Dai Mubai was a coward and a deserter who cared nothing for her life or death.

Worst of all, since arriving here Dai Mubai had wallowed in self-indulgence, refusing to Cultivate and simply drowning his sorrows—perhaps to release stress.

But Zhu Zhuqing could not forgive him.

Even in a World where Spirit Masters and nobles lived decadent lives, she couldn't accept such a Dai Mubai.

Looking at the girl lost in disappointment, Zhou Ting asked with some pity,

"Still planning to go to Shrek Academy?"

Zhu Zhuqing's resolve hadn't wavered; only her eyes now held something new.

"Yes."

The answer caught Zhou Ting completely off guard; he gaped, momentarily speechless.

Seeing the usually unruffled, even reckless Zhou Ting struck dumb, Zhu Zhuqing couldn't help smiling.

The smile vanished in an instant, yet it was stunning enough.

Zhou Ting shut his mouth, awed: "So beautiful!"

Zhu Zhuqing studied her "savior" and, for once, felt the urge to speak.

"I left home… I need teachers, resources—otherwise I can't grow strong quickly."

Zhou Ting probed gently,

"How about… we head to Heaven Dou City together?"

"With my status… it's special. Even if we go, no one will teach me sincerely."

Zhou Ting fell silent; it was indeed an unsolvable problem.

After all, she was a member of the Empress-clan of another Empire, even a candidate for the next Empress—who would dare foster her?

Suddenly Zhou Ting thought of someone—a certain rich woman—and his eyes lit up as everything clicked.

If he could persuade her and Zhu Zhuqing to join forces, everyone would be happy.

But that would be hard to pull off.

He buried the outrageous idea and said,

"In that case, I'll accompany you to take a look at Shrek Academy in a couple of days."

"All right."

For reasons she couldn't name, Zhu Zhuqing agreed readily.

They checked into an inn; classes began in two days. Zhou Ting had planned to take Big Kitty out and deepen their bond.

Who knew the girl was Cultivating to the point of obsession, never once leaving her room.

Truly… too diligent!

Even Zhou Ting, who worked hard, felt outclassed.

Two days later Zhu Zhuqing finished Cultivating, brows knit with worry.

"Something's wrong."

"Before I fled the Family I'd reached level twenty-seven, but I wasn't on the verge of a Breakthrough."

"I improved on the road, but one bout of exhaustion shouldn't have pushed me over! And also…"

She slipped a hand under her clothes and traced the raised scar on her smooth belly, puzzled.

"What medicine did he use? When I woke, the wound had already scabbed."

She racked her brain, and suddenly tasted a faint sweetness.

She remembered!

"He fed me something that healed my injuries and even helped me advance?"

No answer came.

"Off to Shrek first…"

After tidying up, she stepped into the hall and saw Zhou Ting eating breakfast.

"Morning!"

She nodded lightly, sat across from him, and the two ate before setting out together.

Unable to bear his burning gaze, she finally asked,

"You're heading to Heaven Dou City?"

Zhou Ting nodded. "Yep, some business there."

Zhu Zhuqing blinked.

"Not for school?"

He looked smug.

"A genius like me is self-taught—why bother with academies?"

She started to retort, then recalled the two kinds of bugs he'd summoned.

A swarm of bees had stalled a forty-first-rank Spirit Ancestor, buying them time to flee.

The second swarm had dropped her, a twenty-eighth-rank, in one move, leaving her helpless.

Zhou Ting… was a complete freak, unlike anything she'd ever seen.

In the Star Luo Imperial Family's entire library she'd found no record of such a being.

A wild thought surfaced: maybe he really didn't need a teacher.

Zhou Ting had no clue; if he had, he'd have blushed.

He'd simply been bragging!

He knew plenty about the Douluo Continent and even future events.

But he wasn't omniscient—he hadn't even chosen his next Spirit Beast.

Think of the past five years.

To obtain the Soul Passing Worm he'd had to raise the Jade Emperor Bee, even delaying his own Cultivation.

Otherwise, only a madman would push the bee to six hundred years so early.

He knew efficiency increased with higher levels, making later cultivation faster.

But without powering up the Jade Emperor Bee, how could he subdue the Soul Passing Worm?

Still, once he had the worm, everything improved.

The name "Soul-Passing" instead of "Soul-Devouring" had its reason.

A single Soul Passing Worm can absorb only limited spirit power, and they have no self-control, often exploding from excess energy.

No Spirit Master wants to blow up without noticing.

So few hunt them.

Yet Zhou Ting could summon beast projections, erasing that risk.

And the worm had a bigger advantage.

He could let the Soul Passing Worm absorb huge amounts of outside energy… then spit it back out.

Disgusting as it sounded, the energy was pure gold, letting the beasts inside his Black Pagoda grow steadily.

From then on he could Cultivate normally, finally free of baggage.

That was why he'd chosen the Soul Passing Worm—though at the time it was only a guess.

Still, their ability to drain an enemy's spirit power and stamina made them worth the gamble!Chapter 36: 36. Special, Especially Poor

Chapter 36: 36. Special, Especially Poor

"...Our Shrek Academy only accepts monsters, so leave!"

"Give me back my application fee!"

"Hmph, it's Shrek Academy's rule—the application fee is non-refundable!"

"If you don't refund it, we're not leaving today!"

...Hearing the commotion from the Shrek Academy registration desk from afar, Zhou Ting couldn't help but quicken his pace to watch the drama unfold.

Zhu Zhuqing shook her head helplessly at his spectator-like behavior, yet her footsteps didn't slow down in the slightest.

"Little San, this Shrek Academy is quite special!"

Hearing Xiao Wu's familiar voice ahead, Zhou Ting curled his lip and thought, "It is quite special—especially poor!"

Not to mention it's built in a run-down village; all sorts of facilities are non-existent, and they can't even guarantee the students' meals.

Even the Dean goes out to run a small shop, selling junk at exorbitant prices—a total profiteer.

"Mubai..."

Dai Mubai descended from the sky and immediately began to show off. As soon as his top-tier spirit rings—two yellow and one purple—appeared around him, they instantly blinded everyone's eyes.

"A Thousand-year spirit ring!"

"It's a Spirit Elder!"

Dai Mubai said with overbearing dominance.

"The application fee can be refunded, as long as you can beat me!"

The father and son who failed the registration were instantly speechless and could only flee the scene miserably.

Seeing this, Zhou Ting kept shaking his head.

"Sigh, this Shrek Academy really is... stingy!"

Zhu Zhuqing looked into Zhou Ting's eyes curiously and asked.

"Is this why you're unwilling to enroll?"

Zhou Ting scanned the surroundings; it was just an ordinary village, and even the nearby flora was unremarkable.

There wasn't even a single century-old tree.

Zhou Ting shook his head, not trying to fool her this time.

"This place isn't suitable for my Cultivation!"

Zhu Zhuqing nodded in understanding and said no more.

Zhou Ting looked at the queue ahead, then at Shrek Academy. His eyes darted around as a good idea popped into his head.

He left the line and said to Zhu Zhuqing.

"You queue up yourself; I have something to take care of!"

Zhu Zhuqing simply nodded in response, her eyes fixed on the triumphant Dai Mubai, her thoughts unknown.

Zhou Ting didn't mind and quickly bypassed the queue.

Calling it the gate of Shrek Academy was a stretch; it was actually just a dilapidated wooden frame with a plaque on top that hadn't even been refurbished.

The academy clearly had a Spirit Emperor over level sixty—the old man at the entrance checking bone ages who had a Staff Spirit.

They even had two Spirit Saints over level seventy: Dean Flender and Vice-Dean Zhao Wuji.

Yet, despite having such powerful experts, they managed a Spirit Master academy in such a poverty-stricken state.

It's truly... hard to comment on!

Zhou Ting didn't pay attention to what happened next at the registration desk; by now, he was already strolling through a village.

After a short walk, Shrek's playground suddenly appeared before his eyes.

He smiled smugly.

"Who says you have to join Shrek Academy to get in!"

The next moment, Zhou Ting ran up to an old man sunbathing and said with a smile.

"Old man, can I ask you something?"

The grey-haired old man looked at the mask on Zhou Ting's face with searching eyes and asked.

"What is it?"

"Old man, I want to rent a room here and stay for a while!"

The old man looked at Zhou Ting, then at Shrek Academy just a meter away. He suddenly laughed, stood up, and said with great enthusiasm.

"Yes, of course you can. However, in our village, the minimum rental period is three months!"

"Oh, and how much is it per month?"

The old man paced slowly, pausing here and there as if deep in thought.

Suddenly, a flash of cunning crossed his eyes. His face wrinkled with a smile as he held up a withered yellow finger.

"One Silver coin!"

Zhou Ting frowned, feeling somewhat dissatisfied.

This price was a bit too high. Thinking back to Tang San, when he first started working at the blacksmith shop, his monthly income was only one Silver coin.

Now, for this old, broken room in the countryside, he actually dared to charge him one Silver coin a month. This old man really took him for a sucker!

The smile on Zhou Ting's face vanished instantly. He turned and... left, without a hint of hesitation.

The old man stood frozen on the spot, completely dumbfounded.

"This kid... why doesn't he follow common sense? He should at least bargain."

"Why did he just turn and leave without saying a word!"

Seeing the cooked duck about to fly away, the old man couldn't sit still anymore and hurriedly shouted.

"Hey, young brother, don't go! We can still discuss the price!"

Income from farming in the countryside was extremely limited; one could only save a few Silver coins a year.

Now, having finally encountered someone offering money, he absolutely couldn't let him go.

The old man saw that Zhou Ting was ignoring him, and his legs and feet suddenly became agile. He sprinted a few steps and grabbed Zhou Ting's sleeve, saying.

"Young brother, don't be in a hurry! The price is negotiable. Besides, my house is the closest to Shrek Academy; you can see everything they do!"

Zhou Ting was speechless; this old fellow was treating him...

...as if he were here to steal their techniques.

However, it was precisely because he liked this excellent location that he had inquired.

With a gentle flick of his hand, the old man, being just an ordinary person, naturally couldn't hold onto Zhou Ting's sleeve.

He asked with a cold face, devoid of any emotion.

"I'll only ask once: how much?"

The little old man calculated frantically in his head but didn't know what price to give.

A minute later, Zhou Ting's patience was nearly exhausted, and he was about to turn and leave.

The little old man finally realized things were going south and hurriedly shouted.

"One Silver coin for three months!"

Zhou Ting nodded expressionlessly, took out a Silver coin, and flipped it to him, saying.

"I want the room on the second floor with the window!"

"Alright, no problem!"

Looking at the Silver coin in his hand, the little old man was overjoyed.

This idle, broken room of his was originally just gathering dust and had no value.

But now, renting it to the masked man for one Silver coin for three months was a huge profit.

That was a Silver coin; his whole family couldn't even earn a few in a year.

And that was only if nothing went wrong at home.

This time, it was truly a massive gain.

Overwhelmed with joy, the little old man tucked away the Silver coin and shouted toward the house behind him.

"Old woman, hurry up and clean the room by the window on the second floor so the honored guest can rest early!"

"Alright, I'm going now."

Then, the old man turned and asked Zhou Ting with a fawning expression.

"Young brother, would you like us to provide meals..."

Zhou Ting waved his hand and refused.

"No need, I'll find my own place to eat!"

The little old man was a bit disappointed, but when he saw the silky clothes on Zhou Ting, he understood instantly.

"True, ordinary farmhouse food wouldn't be worthy of you."

"It's not a matter of being worthy; a Spirit Master's Cultivation requires a lot of meat, which you can't provide."

The old man suddenly gave a bitter smile.

It was true; his family indeed didn't have much meat.

Zhou Ting suddenly saw a familiar figure appear on the square and immediately instructed the old man.

"Get me some hot water; I'll need it when I come back tonight!"

"Alright."

Since they cooked their own meals, there was plenty of hot water. The old man agreed readily, without even mentioning an extra feeChapter 37 – Practical Examination

Chapter 37 – 37. Practical Examination

...Two at Rank twenty-nine, one at twenty-eight, one at twenty-six. All four of you may skip these two rounds and proceed directly to the final test.

Dai Mubai, the corners of his mouth curved in a smile, led Tang San and the others away from the second-round site.

Shrek Academy's entrance requirements are brutal: applicants must be under twelve years old and possess spirit power at Rank twenty-one or higher.

Once spirit power exceeds Rank twenty-five, the second and third rounds are waived; the candidate advances straight to the fourth and final stage—actual combat.

Since its founding twenty years ago, Shrek Academy has admitted forty-two students. Only fourteen have graduated.

The rest died at the claws of Spirit Beasts or failed to reach Rank forty-one before turning twenty.

Of those fourteen graduates, the most outstanding is said to be the youngest Elder of Spirit Hall—his authority second only to the Supreme Pontiff.

On the rooftop, Zhou Ting—following at a distance—curled his lip in disdain at Dai Mubai's boasting.

An academy that only accepts geniuses yet can't ensure most of them graduate? Ridiculous.

With Shrek's admission standards, any student admitted would receive top-tier resources at any other Spirit Master academy.

Reaching Rank forty-one by twenty? Absolutely doable anywhere else.

How many geniuses has Shrek wasted?

And… the best graduate is supposedly Spirit Hall's youngest Elder?

Even if he were from the very first class, he'd only be thirty-two this year.

A Spirit Hall Elder at thirty-two?

All Spirit Hall Elders are Titled Douluo.

A thirty-two-year-old Titled Douluo—achieving it even earlier than Tang Hao!

That's beyond absurd; that's absurdity opening the door to welcome even more absurdity.

Zhou Ting was speechless.

Rumors really shouldn't be spread like this.

Still… "authority" and "Elder" reminded him of someone—Grandmaster Yu Xiaogang.

Authority, after all, can be theoretical.

Yes, a tale grows in the telling.

Dai Mubai brought Tang San's group to the rear courtyard. There, a muscle-bound man sat on a chair, arms folded, eyes closed in rest.

Dai Mubai glanced at the black-clad girl who ignored him, bitterness flickering across his face, then stepped cautiously to the man's side.

'Teacher Zhao, all four of them have skipped the first two rounds.'

The man opened his eyes, surprised.

'Four candidates reaching the final round this year?'

In the next moment he stood before Tang San, studying the four unfazed youngsters with interest.

'Good. Today I'll personally test the mettle of you Little freaks.'

Dai Mubai paled and hastily intervened.

'Teacher Zhao, isn't it inappropriate for you to take action…'

'Inappropriate? The headmaster's away; I'm in charge. What I say goes. Got a problem with that?'

The man's glare sent cold sweat down Dai Mubai's spine; he quickly shook his head.

Satisfied, the man nodded.

'Mubai, give them my details. If even one of you lasts one incense stick against me, all four pass.'

Dai Mubai smiled wryly and began briefing Tang San's team.

Zhao Wuji, nicknamed the Immovable King of Brightness—legend says that as a Spirit Emperor he fought off a dozen Spirit Hall bishops of the same Rank and escaped alive.

Now a seventy-sixth Rank Spirit Saint, his defenses are terrifying; the title Immovable King is well-earned.

When Dai Mubai finished, Tang San's group huddled to share information and plan strategy.

Relying on his highest spirit power, his gender, and Xiao Wu's support, Tang San naturally became team leader.

They analyzed intel and assigned roles.

Zhou Ting found the process boring; he lay back on the roof, breeze brushing his face, enjoying the leisure.

One incense stick later.

'We're ready!'

'Then let's begin!'

Zhao Wuji's roar was deafening.

'Really… ruining my peace.'

Grumbling, Zhou Ting still didn't open his eyes; his mind entered the first floor of his martial soul black pagoda.

'Bee Queen, display it.'

Buzz!

Across Shrek Academy—grass, trees, rooftops, sky—phantom Jade Emperor Bees flickered in and out of view.

Swish…

Inside the hive, a 360-degree battlefield materialized before Zhou Ting.

Six slightly translucent figures, almost lifelike, stood in the projection.

Only the lack of color kept it from being a god's-eye view.

The fight began!

Zhao Wuji was putting on airs, standing still while four Spirit Grandmasters pounded him—he hadn't even used a Spirit Ability.

Recalling the anime he'd watched, Zhou Ting's expression turned odd.

The cockier Zhao Wuji acted now, the worse he'd suffer later—first struck by Tang San's Hidden Weapons in a rage, then smashed by Xiao Wu's mini Clear Sky Hammer.

After the test, a Titled Douluo father-guardian would beat him half to death.

A perfect illustration of "hit the kid, summon the dad."

Suddenly Zhou Ting focused.

'This Tang San… really has some tricks.'

On the field, under Ning Rongrong's simultaneous strength and agility boosts, Tang San, Xiao Wu, and Zhu Zhuqing launched Zhao Wuji skyward, planting him headfirst—face down.

When the dust settled, Zhao Wuji rose, looking none too pleased.

Seeing Dai Mubai stifling laughter beside him only darkened his mood.

'Fine, excellent. I didn't expect you four to coordinate so well.'

'But now I'm getting serious.'

With a surge of spirit power, golden light cloaked Zhao Wuji; behind him appeared a colossal bear.

Tang San and Xiao Wu exchanged glances, launching in perfect sync.

'Blue Silver Binding!'

Zhou Ting exclaimed in disbelief.

How confident was Tang San?

He actually planned to restrain a seventy-sixth Rank Spirit Saint with his first Spirit Ability!

Crack!

As expected, Zhao Wuji lifted a hand and the twice-strengthened Blue Silver Grass shattered to nothing.

Tang San's lips curved in a triumphant smile.

Xiao Wu was already in front of Zhao Wuji—Soft Technique activated!

'Whipping Kick!'

With a confident grin, Zhao Wuji casually blocked the kick and mocked,

'Little girl, too light.'

Thud!

A casual swat sent Xiao Wu flying.

Just as Zhao Wuji gloated, Zhu Zhuqing appeared behind him, seizing one of his arms at the perfect moment.

Simultaneously, countless Blue Silver Grass burst from the ground, Binding Zhao Wulong fast.

Zhu Zhuqing had already darted clear of the grass cage!

'Did… he lose?'

Tang San shook his head decisively, expression grave.

'Not yet. He's only used spirit power—no spirit abilities.'

'Ha, well observed!'

Zhao Wuji's voice rang strong; he was still in peak condition.

Nearly half an incense stick had passed; four Spirit Grandmasters working together hadn't even scratched him.

Immovable King—fully deserved title.

All four felt a wave of defeat.

It was the humiliation of geniuses.

And now, that pride lay in tatters.Chapter 38: Gossip

Chapter 38: 38. Gossip

"Roar!"

The giant bear behind Zhao Wuji let out a furious roar, and the Blue Silver Prison surrounding him shattered instantly.

As for the negative effects like poison and Parasite attached to the Blue Silver Grass, they couldn't even pierce Zhao Wuji's skin, so how could they take effect!

"Heh heh, little brats, I'm getting serious now!"

Zhao Wuji stomped his right foot heavily, and in the next instant, he charged toward Tang San's group of four with extreme speed.

Yes, speed was indeed Zhao Wuji's weakness, but that was only relative to other Spirit Masters of the same level!

Facing Spirit Grandmasters like Tang San and the others who were only in their twenties, he could win decisively even if they had Ning Rongrong's 30% speed boost.

"Boom..."

"This is bad, Teacher Zhao is... angry."

Dai Mubai looked at the black-clad young girl blocking Zhao Wuji's path with a worried face, yet he was powerless to help.

At this moment, he felt as if he had returned to his days in the Star Luo Imperial Palace, where no one believed in him and he had to face constant suppression from the outside world.

Some of it came from his elder brother himself, and even more came from the factions that had sided with his brother.

In short, in the palace, he... could see no hope at all.

There was only oppression, powerlessness, and despair!

When he was twelve, he ran away, leaving the Star Luo Empire to escape it all.

Although he continued to Cultivate, it seemed more like a habit; mostly, he spent his days wandering through flowers, unable to pull himself away!

"Boom!"

Finally using his spirit power, Zhao Wuji was unstoppable. Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing attacked together, but both were sent flying at the same time.

"Be careful!" ·2

Tang San and Dai Mubai rushed out respectively.

At the same time, Zhou Ting, who was watching from a distance, had a very sinister smile on his face as he murmured.

"Trying to be the hero saving the beauties... keep dreaming!"

"Catch them!"

At Zhou Ting's command, dozens of football-sized Jade Emperor Bees suddenly appeared behind the flying Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing, weaving themselves into a net.

"Buzz buzz!"

Xiao Wu fell heavily onto the bee net, but she didn't feel any recoil.

A perfect absorption of force!

Looking back, Xiao Wu cried out in surprise.

"Jade Emperor Bees!"

Even though the bees had grown a bit larger, she still recognized them!

Thinking back to that familiar aura she felt on the street two days ago, everything became clear.

"It's him!" ·3

Not just Xiao Wu, but Tang San and Zhu Zhuqing recognized them as well!

Zhu Zhuqing slapped away the hands reaching out to catch her, her face expressionless.

"This ungrateful woman!"

Dai Mubai's face turned ashen, and a monstrous evil fire burned in his chest!

Zhu Zhuqing glanced at him and ignored him again, her heart bitter: such an emotional prince was simply laughable!

Zhao Wuji looked at the suddenly appearing Jade Emperor Bees, his expression extremely serious.

He had been having fun playing with these brats just now and had actually overlooked the presence of the bee swarm.

Sensing them now... good grief, almost the entire Shrek Academy was covered by this strange bee swarm!

Zhao Wuji asked with a serious face.

"Do you know these bees?"

Tang San stood beside Xiao Wu. Recalling his unpleasant experiences with Zhou Ting as a child, his expression was not good.

Tang San... did not want to say that name, and even less did he want to see him!

Why did he have to show up?!!

Xiao Wu, on the other hand, was very happy and said with a smile.

"This is a Spirit Ability of a friend of mine!"

Hearing this, Zhu Zhuqing murmured to herself.

"So, he really does have a friend here!"

Xiao Wu had originally thought it was strange, wondering why Zhou Ting would catch Zhu Zhuqing; she wondered if it was because of that pair of peerless 'weapons'.

But now she understood; it turned out they had known each other for a long time.

In fact, she didn't know that her subconscious first reaction was actually the most correct answer!

Immediately, a strange light flickered in Xiao Wu's eyes as she looked at Zhu Zhuqing.

Zhao Wuji sensed the aura of these strange bee Spirit Beasts. Even for him, dealing with these hundreds of bees would probably take some effort.

Furthermore, if they flew high into the sky and didn't come down, he wouldn't even be able to do anything to them!

Zhao Wuji asked with a strange expression.

"Friend? Are you sure!"

Zhu Zhuqing and Xiao Wu nodded at the same time, while Tang San and Dai Mubai's faces turned green.

Zhao Wuji thought for a moment and glanced at the incense on the ground that was about to go out.

"Whatever, one more person doesn't matter. You all... attack together!"

Tang San and the others didn't waste words and attacked together... Dai Mubai looked at the bee swarm with a very unfriendly gaze and said in a low voice.

"Who are you? Why have you appeared at our Shrek Academy?"

Oh, someone's angry!

Zhou Ting suddenly became interested.

The Jade Emperor Bees naturally couldn't speak, but that didn't stop them from communicating!

The bee swarm suddenly moved, forming four large characters in front of Dai Mubai: 'None of your business'.

"Boom!"

Dai Mubai's eyes spat fire, and the evil fire etched into his genes was completely ignited.

The bee swarm had helped Zhu Zhuqing, and she had actually accepted the help so naturally without any resistance, yet she was so disdainful and disgusted by him!

Having been with countless women, he had a strong intuition in his heart.

Behind this bee swarm was a man!

He felt as if a green pasture had grown on top of his head!

Dai Mubai roared in a low voice.

"Please leave, Shrek Academy does not welcome you!"

Now, Zhou Ting was even more interested, and more Jade Emperor Bees joined in.

"Oh... when did the Dean of Shrek Academy change to you?"

This time, fearing he might have a reading disability, Zhou Ting thoughtfully added punctuation marks.

He, Zhou Ting, was truly a great philanthropist!

Dai Mubai was exasperated, but he could do nothing against Zhou Ting, who was not present.

But Zhou Ting would not stop there and continued to mock him.

"Little Dai, I really envy you, singing songs every night, and with such great beauties too!"

These words were spoken with such apparent sincerity!

Dai Mubai was extremely panicked, looking guiltily toward Zhu Zhuqing. He only felt relieved when he saw she wasn't looking over.

At the same time, he launched an attack, forcing the bee swarm to fly away.

Zhou Ting smiled and continued writing in the air.

"Anxious now? Sigh, don't be in such a rush. Did you think no one knew about your scandalous affairs?"

"Your reputation as Dai the Great Stallion has long spread throughout Suotuo City, and even the Balak Kingdom! You're quite famous!"

So that was it!

Dai Mubai suddenly realized. No wonder Zhu Zhuqing's attitude toward him was so poor; she already knew.

Dai Mubai felt conflicted in his heart.

"What do I do now?"

"Actually, this isn't a huge mistake. I was just using it to vent the negative emotions in my heart."

"Besides, don't all nobles do this? Even my Imperial Father has a harem full of concubines!"

"Right, exactly. It's normal for a man to have three wives and four concubines, let alone someone from the Imperial Family like me. Spreading the family line is our mission."

The more he thought about it, the more confident and composed Dai Mubai became.

He no longer felt the slightest bit of guilt in his heart.

He had successfully gaslighted himself!

Although Zhou Ting didn't know what Dai Mubai was thinking, he could guess a thing or two from the changes in his expression.

Just as Zhou Ting was about to continue breaking his mental state, a change suddenly occurred on the battlefield.

Xiao Wu still used her Charm, but she hadn't expected the outcome.

Zhao Wuji's title as the Immovable King of Brightness wasn't for show; not only was his physical defense terrifying, but so was his mental defense.

Golden light shot from his eyes, directly causing a backlash on Xiao Wu.

"Xiao Wu!"

Seeing Xiao Wu being caught by the bee swarm and falling unconscious, Tang San lowered his head, his heart filled with grief and despair.

"Bang!"

Zhu Zhuqing followed in Xiao Wu's footsteps, lying on the bee net, unable to get up for a moment.

Tang San's lowered head suddenly lifted. His gaze toward Zhao Wuji was exceptionally cold and sharp, and his voice carried no emotion whatsoever.

"Teacher Zhao, next, I am going to use my full strength. You'd better be careful!"

After saying that, Tang San's hands suddenly became as white as jade, and the Yin Qi beneath his feet was chilling, making his movements unpredictable.

Suddenly, he disappeared.

"Clang clang clang..."Chapter 39 – The Hammer Didn't Land

Chapter 39 – 39. The Hammer Didn't Land

Under Ning Rongrong's +30% strength and agility boost, Tang San sprinted around Zhao Wuji so fast he almost turned into a streak of light.

At the same time, his jade-white hands moved like a thousand-armed Guanyin, and all kinds of tiny metal objects suddenly appeared in them, too indistinct to make out.

On the ground beneath Zhao Wuji, however, countless Hidden Weapons clattered down: steel needles, throwing knives, arrows… In mere tens of seconds the floor was carpeted so thickly not a breath of wind could get through.

Zhao Wuji stood motionless, bathed in golden light, letting Tang San attack with Hidden Weapons yet unable to scratch his defense.

Zhao Wuji watched Tang San leap about, grinned, and mocked.

'Little monkey, put some back into it! That tickles your grandpa more than a feather!'

Tang San said nothing, kept striking different parts of Zhao Wuji's body.

According to his previous life's Martial Forest experience, every hard-style art—Iron Shirt, Golden Bell Cover—left one acupoint as the "gate of life."

And that gate was the fatal weak point.

To Tang San, Zhao Wuji, the Immovable King of Brightness, though peerless in defense, should follow the same rule.

He simply overlooked one fact: this World was fundamentally different.

A slap in the face was therefore inevitable!

'Little monkey, where do you think you're running?'

Seeing the slippery Tang San suddenly appear in front of him, Zhao Wuji was overjoyed and grabbed—his hand closed on empty air!

That's right: he missed.

Zhao Wuji glared at the phantom-like Tang San, yet for once spoke in praise.

'A bizarre self-created Spirit Ability! However…'

'Heh, you don't think a Spirit Saint's strength is this simple, do you?'

'Third Spirit Ability… Gravity Enhancement!'

Originally, Zhao Wuji had planned to try catching this slippery little monkey.

But the stick of incense on the ground was almost burnt out!

Of course, this definitely had nothing to do with his lack of confidence in dealing with Tang San's uncanny footwork!

As the Spirit Ability activated, Tang San felt crushing weight from above and dropped to one knee, unable to stand.

Zhao Wuji glanced back at the stub of incense and smiled.

'Little monkey, no more chances this time!'

'Fourth Spirit Ability, Fifth Spirit Ability!'

Pinned in place, Tang San suddenly smelled a sweet, honey-like fragrance.

At the same time his scalp prickled, as if targeted by a monstrous bear.

'Danger!'

The instant he realized it, an irresistible force slammed into him from behind.

Whoosh!

To his shock, Tang San found himself "flying" straight toward Zhao Wuji.

If he delivered himself to Zhao Wuji, he would have no hope left!

In that crisis, Tang San recalled his gains in Suotuo City these past two days; looking at Zhao Wuji, a trace of pity flickered across his eyes.

'Have to use that, Teacher Zhao… life and death are in the hands of fate.'

Tang San narrowed his eyes, deadly serious.

Zhao Wuji's defense was outrageous; even his new Hidden Weapon designed to crack hard qi-arts had to find a weak spot.

At that instant Tang San's eyes turned completely purple, rivaling Zhao Wuji's golden gaze.

Zhao Wuji couldn't help praising.

'This little monkey really has tricks—jade hands, footwork, ocular art—three self-created Spirit Abilities already, plus those weird weapons… I must recruit him.'

'But first I need to teach him a lesson, or where can I put this old face!'

Distracted, Zhao Wuji finally let a thin spot in his protective spirit power show.

'Now!'

Ssshh!

Four or five gold needles finer than hair sliced the air, and, aided by gravity, stabbed deep into Zhao Wuji's body!

Feeling the long-lost sting all over, Zhao Wuji paled.

A twenty-ninth-level Spirit Grandmaster had actually breached his defense.

Shocking—utterly shocking!

Ugh!

Pain!

Excruciating pain!

Arms, chest—everywhere throbbed.

And the agony was creeping toward his heart; if it reached that, the consequences would be unthinkable!

He forgot Tang San entirely, instantly channeling spirit power to seal the afflicted areas.

A second later he looked up and saw Tang San's detestable face nearby.

'Little monkey… you're asking for a beating!'

Clack!

Ning Rongrong sprang up and called out.

'Stop! The incense is finished!'

Zhao Wuji stiffly turned; only the bare stick remained.

But swallow this loss in silence?

Just then a lanky figure rounded into the field; seeing the mess, he cried.

'Wh-what have you done here?'

The newcomer wailed in anguish.

'Agh, Zhao Wuji!'

Zhao Wuji gave an embarrassed laugh.

'Hahaha…'

'Huh, why is Flender here already?'

Zhou Ting, watching in secret, was startled; he'd wanted to see Tang San smash Zhao Wuji with the Clear Sky Hammer.

But… a Clear Sky Hammer without any spirit rings dealing such damage would be absurd!

Even if Zhao Wuji underestimated Tang San, it couldn't happen.

He'd hoped to spot some trick—maybe someone tampering—but… the swing never came.

What a let-down!

The next moment, once Flender understood, his eyes lit up.

Four Little freaks had passed the entrance test under Zhao Wuji this year—fantastic!

Tang San and Xiao Wu he knew; they were Xiaogang's Disciples.

The other two weren't simple either.

But seeing the two injured girls floating in mid-air, Flender shot Zhao Wuji a fierce glare and shouted.

'Oscar, get over here!'

Whoosh!

Summoned by the headmaster, Oscar instantly answered.

'Headmaster, you called?'

Flender eyed his bearded Disciple, fought the urge, but finally snapped.

'No more beard from now on!'

Oscar scratched his head, chastened.

'Yes, sir.'

'Good. They're hurt—make a few Sausages…'

At the word Sausage, Oscar brightened and quoted.

'Teacher, five copper coins each.'

Asking the teacher for money?

Flender smiled dangerously.

'Little Ao, are you sure?'

Oscar's smile froze; he grimaced.

'But teacher, students have to eat.'

Flender sneered back.

'Hmph, didn't you say you can make Sausages?'

Oscar had no reply.

Flender barked.

'Stop dawdling!'

'All right…'

With a timid nod, Oscar raised his hand, glanced unconsciously at the injured, and his gaze locked on Ning Rongrong.

Making Sausage… failed!

'What are you thinking!'

Snapping back, Oscar tried again, muttering the chant.

'I've got a…'

Suddenly a crisp, disgusted voice cut in.

'Hold it—I'm not eating that!'Chapter 40: Reunion

Chapter 40: Reunion

"Xiao Wu, you're awake! How are your injuries?"

Tang San forgot his internal injuries, quickly ran to Xiao Wu's side, his face full of concern.

Xiao Wu smiled weakly and said.

"Little San, I'm fine."

Having said that, she pulled a small glass bottle from the bag on her waist, handed it to Tang San, and said with a look of distress.

"You're injured too, take this!"

Tang San quickly refused, opened the stopper, and brought the mouth of the bottle to Xiao Wu's lips.

"No, Xiao Wu, this is the last bottle, you take it!"

Hearing this, Zhou Ting gasped, feeling an extremely bad premonition in his heart.

The next moment, Xiao Wu smiled and looked at the Jade Emperor Bees in the sky, saying.

"Don't worry, someone will give me some!"

"Little San, hurry up and take it!"

Tang San remembered the wooden box Zhou Ting had given Xiao Wu when he left. Now... he understood everything.

He held the bottle with complex emotions. The honey, which he usually found incredibly sweet, was now difficult to swallow.

Xiao Wu didn't know this; she thought Tang San was worried about her, and she was greatly moved. She reached out and "forced" the honey into Tang San's mouth.

Seeing Tang San consume the jade emperor honey, his complexion gradually turning rosy, Xiao Wu then looked at the swarm of bees in the sky and asked gently.

"Zhou Ting! Isn't that right?"

Zhou Ting, who was 'playing dead' on a nearby rooftop, was speechless and reluctantly opened his eyes.

At the same time, more Jade Emperor Bees appeared, enveloping Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing, and carrying the two of them soaring into the sky.

"Swoosh swoosh..."

Zhou Ting's position was on the other side of the training ground, and the distance between them was not far.

In less than a minute, Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing had arrived at the rooftop where he was.

Xiao Wu was greatly surprised when she saw the fat tiger mask on Zhou Ting's face.

"I haven't seen you in five years, and you're wearing a mask now."

Although she was weak all over, Xiao Wu seemed exceptionally lively at this moment, her eyes incredibly bright.

Zhou Ting took off the mask, revealing his handsome face.

Although not overly handsome, he was much better looking than Tang San.

Xiao Wu stared intently, then suddenly showed her canine teeth and accused him fiercely.

"I saw you on the street two days ago, why did you turn around and leave!"

Zhou Ting looked at Zhu Zhuqing and said.

"I went to stop someone from doing something foolish!"

Having said that, Zhou Ting took out a glass bottle from his cloth bag.

Since he was already planning to see Little Rabbit, the items he promised her were naturally already prepared.

He took out a small spoon, scooped up a dollop of White Jade, and stuffed it into the mouth of a certain overly lively Little Rabbit.

The familiar sweet scent finally made the Little Rabbit close her mouth. She gave Zhou Ting a look that said 'you're sensible,' and then began to focus on refining it.

Seeing this, Zhou Ting walked over to Zhu Zhuqing's side and switched spoons.

However, after glancing at the people on the training ground, he said meaningfully to Zhu Zhuqing.

"Tell me, it was just an entrance exam. Was it worth fighting to the death?"

Zhu Zhuqing did not answer, but naturally opened her red lips and ate the White Jade brought to her mouth.

It melted upon entering her mouth.

The familiar taste—this was what he fed me when I was unconscious!

At this moment, neither Zhou Ting nor Zhu Zhuqing noticed that Dai Mubai's face had turned green, and fire was practically shooting out of his eyes.

Once the honey was swallowed, Zhu Zhuqing felt a warm energy flow out from her abdomen and spread throughout her body.

"Meditate!"

As soon as Zhou Ting reminded her, Zhu Zhuqing immediately complied.

At this moment, spirit power surged on Xiao Wu and Zhu Zhuqing, and their complexions visibly turned rosy.

Their injuries were recovering!

Looking at the few people on the training ground who were curiously observing them, Zhou Ting looked at the ordinary-looking Tang San and casually greeted him.

"Long time no see, Tang San!"

Tang San leaped up and came to Xiao Wu's side. Seeing that she was already improving, he felt a huge weight lift off his chest.

Turning his head, he looked at Zhou Ting with complex eyes.

"Yes, long time no see. Why are you here?"

Zhou Ting nodded toward Zhu Zhuqing and said.

"I came to find her."

Tang San looked at Zhou Ting, then at Zhu Zhuqing. His eyes suddenly became surprised and suggestive, and a massive burden was suddenly lifted from his heart.

Tang San's attitude toward Zhou Ting became unusually friendly, and he couldn't stop smiling.

"Good..."

Dai Mubai also flew up, standing not far from Zhu Zhuqing, his face ashen.

"Good what??!!"

There's something fishy going on between these two!

Tang San was momentarily stunned, then suddenly realized.

The "improper" relationship between the three of them.

At this moment, everyone's eyes were darting between Zhou Ting, Zhu Zhuqing, and Dai Mubai, their expressions teasing and suggestive.

Tang San, however, was conflicted.

Originally, given his "good friend" relationship with Zhou Ting, he naturally hoped Dai Mubai would succeed and Zhou Ting would escape this sea of suffering.

After all, Zhu Zhuqing, that Little Wildcat, clearly wasn't easy to tame.

However, Tang San glanced at Xiao Wu again and thought: Zhou Ting, you must succeed!

For no other reason, you cannot fail for the sake of Xiao Wu and me.

Don't worry, Xiao Wu and I will definitely spare no effort to help you.

Tang San's eyes were full of encouragement.

Zhou Ting saw through his little scheme instantly but didn't pay it any mind.

"Mmm..."

A comfortable moan sounded, and Xiao Wu subsequently opened her eyes.

The next moment, she suddenly realized something was wrong. She covered her mouth, blushing, and then glared fiercely at Zhou Ting: It's all your fault for embarrassing me!

Zhou Ting... was speechless!

Was it wrong to help you?!!

After being nourished by the royal jelly, Xiao Wu's Spirit had mostly recovered.

She immediately jumped up and landed next to Zhou Ting, raising her hand to pat Zhou Ting's shoulder, just like when they were little.

Unlike when they were children, this time she had to stand slightly on her tiptoes.

This made her even more dissatisfied, and she pouted, saying.

"You hateful guy, you left for five years without even sending a single letter. I almost thought you had died somewhere."

Zhou Ting recalled his five years of 'savage' life and gave a wry smile.

"I spent most of my time in the Star Dou Great Forest. It wasn't convenient, and there was no one who could deliver a letter for me!"

Xiao Wu remembered the beehive on the first floor of the Black Tower, as well as the Bee Queen, and grudgingly accepted the explanation.

The next moment, Xiao Wu cracked her knuckles, asking with a half-smile.

"You just said you came to find Zhu Zhuqing?"

The beast ears on top of Zhu Zhuqing's head twitched, and her face felt a little hot.

On the other side, Zhou Ting looked at Xiao Wu, who was about to turn into a Violent Rabbit, and quickly explained.

"I also came to see you."

Tang San and Xiao Wu exchanged glances and spoke in unison.

"How did you know we would come here?"

"I just came from home."

The two nodded, accepting the explanation.

At this point, seeing that Zhou Ting and the others had finished catching up, Dean Flender finally interjected.

"Zhou Ting, are you also here to enroll?"

A single Spirit Ability can command hundreds of century Spirit Beasts?

This is also a monster!

Flender's eyes sparkled as he looked at Zhou Ting, as if he had seen something he had long dreamed of, exceptionally fervent.

Zhou Ting shook his head and said.

"My Spirit is not suitable for staying in crowded places."

He actually... rejected me??

Everyone else is crying and begging to enroll, yet this kid actually refused.

Flender's expression stiffened slightly.

He couldn't believe it.

Before Zhou Ting could explain, Xiao Wu helped him out.

"That's right, this guy's Spirit is quite special. The Spirit Beast Forest suits him best."
