The gates of HVIS hadn't changed.
Tall. Imposing. Unapologetically elite.
But as the car rolled to a stop, everything else had.
Students lingered in clusters near the entrance, their voices low but charged. News traveled fast in Section E — faster than rumors, faster than truth. And today, we were both.
I stepped out first.
The air felt different here. Heavier. Familiar. Watching.
Keifer came around the other side, his presence immediately shifting the energy. Heads turned. Conversations paused. A ripple moved through the courtyard like a quiet storm building.
"Ready?" he asked softly.
I glanced at him.
Not the boy who broke me.
Not the ghost I ran from.
Just Keifer.
This time, I didn't hesitate. "Yeah."
We walked in together.
Side by side.
Not hiding. Not explaining. Just… existing.
That alone was enough to set the school on fire.
—
Inside Section E, chaos waited.
"NO WAY—"
Percy's voice cut through the room before we even crossed the doorway. He was halfway out of his seat, eyes wide like he'd just witnessed history unfolding in real time.
Behind him, the others froze.
Mina blinked once. Twice. "Is this… real?"
Dylan leaned back against his desk, arms crossed, studying us like a puzzle finally clicking into place. "Took you two long enough."
I exhaled a quiet laugh.
Some things really didn't change.
Keifer stepped forward slightly, but didn't let go of my hand.
That was new.
And they noticed.
Percy pointed dramatically. "HAND HOLDING?! Oh, this is serious serious."
"Percy," Mina muttered, though she was smiling now. "Let them breathe."
But her eyes softened when they met mine.
"You okay?" she asked.
I nodded. "I am now."
Silence followed — not awkward, not tense. Just full.
Understanding kind of silence.
Dylan pushed himself off the desk, walking closer. His gaze flicked between us before settling on Keifer.
"You mess this up again," he said calmly, "you won't have to worry about her forgiving you. You'll have to worry about me."
Keifer didn't flinch.
"I won't," he said simply.
And for once, no one doubted him.
—
By lunch, the entire school knew.
Whispers followed us through hallways, eyes lingered a second too long, phones buzzed endlessly.
"Section E's golden tragedy turned power couple."
I almost laughed at that one.
We sat outside under the old tree — our tree — where everything once felt simple.
Now it felt… real.
Keifer leaned back against the trunk, sunlight catching in his hair. I sat beside him, close enough that our shoulders brushed, easy like it had always been meant to.
"No running," he said quietly.
I tilted my head. "No disappearing."
A small pause.
Then he added, "No lies."
I met his gaze.
"No lies," I agreed.
This time, it wasn't a promise built on hope.
It was one built on truth.
—
Later, as the final bell rang, Section E lingered longer than usual.
No one wanted to say it out loud, but we all felt it.
Something had reset.
Not erased — never erased — but rebuilt.
Stronger.
Messier.
Real.
Percy slung an arm around Dylan, grinning. "I give it a week before they become unbearable."
"We already are," Keifer replied dryly.
I nudged him. "Speak for yourself."
Mina laughed, shaking her head. "This is going to be interesting."
Yeah.
It would be.
Because this time, we weren't a story about heartbreak.
We were a story about what comes after.
—
As we walked out of the gates together, the sun dipped low, casting gold across everything in sight.
Keifer glanced at me. "So… what are we?"
I smiled, not rushing it.
"Something new."
His fingers laced with mine.
And for once, that was enough.
Not perfect.
Not easy.
But ours.
And this time—
We were staying.
Maybe Not always happy
but together
