Chapter 26 - BUILDING THE DEFENSE

Frank and Leo returned to the square, the map from the watchtower folded carefully in Frank's pocket. The town looked peaceful in the late afternoon sun, but Frank knew better—danger was hidden in the calm.

"Leo," Frank said, spreading the map on a crate, "we can't just react anymore. We need to prepare in advance. Every alley, every rooftop, every empty building could be used against us. And now, we know their paths."

Leo leaned over the map, tracing the routes with his finger. "We can warn people… block the alleys… set up lookouts…"

"Exactly," Frank said. "We'll divide the town into zones. Each zone needs someone watching, someone ready to alert others. And we'll make traps and obstacles to slow anyone who tries to attack."

They moved quickly, recruiting a few townsfolk they trusted: the blacksmith, who could set up barricades; the baker, who had sharp eyes and could act as a scout; and a pair of older boys who were fast runners. Frank taught them the basics:

Watch the streets, rooftops, and alleys for movement.

Report suspicious activity immediately.

Use obstacles to delay attackers, not to fight them directly.

By evening, the first defensive posts were set. Buckets, crates, and debris formed barricades along key alleys. Ropes and bells were arranged to alert them if someone approached silently.

Leo looked around, eyes shining. "It actually feels like we're ready. Do you think it will work?"

Frank placed a hand on his shoulder. "It's not perfect. Nothing ever is. But we'll have the advantage of preparation and knowledge. The town's safety depends on anticipation, not luck."

As night fell, Frank climbed to a rooftop near the center of town, scanning the streets below. The quiet was heavy, but not peaceful—he could feel the same presence watching him, calculating. The cloaked figure had noticed the defenses.

A shiver ran down Frank's spine, but it wasn't fear—it was focus. The town's first line of defense was ready. And now, he had to be ready for the test.

"There he stands… and now he prepares," the shadows seemed to whisper.
