After Amber finally finished unloading every curse known to mankind on my poor ears, she tossed one last command at me.
"Tell Quinn to call me."
And with that, she turned on her heels and left—like a dramatic villain exiting after her monologue.
Okay.
That was my cue.
I could officially call it a day.
On my way home, I seriously considered buying popcorn because this level of rich-people drama deserved to be narrated with snacks. Lucy was going to have the time of her life hearing this.
"Darling, I'm home!"
The words slipped out naturally the moment I opened the apartment door.
Big mistake.
Very. Big. Mistake.
I froze.
Standing in the living room was Lucy's mother—eyes wide, mouth slightly open, shock written all over her face. Beside her stood Lucy, stiff as a statue, looking like she wanted the floor to swallow her whole.
Lucy's mom recovered first.
"Lucy," she said slowly, dangerously calm,
"Who is this man… and why is he calling you darling?"
