The doctor's news hung heavy in the air even after he had left the room.
I turned back toward Ezra, my heart breaking instantly at the sight. He was sitting on the edge of the couch, staring fixedly down at the polished floorboards, completely zoned out in deep thought. I knew that look on his face all too well. He was replaying the tragedy of the miscarriage all over again in his mind, blaming himself for everything.
I crossed the room in two swift strides, dropping to my knees right in front of him.
"Don't cry... please, my love, don't cry," I murmured desperately, reaching up to cup his cheeks.
