Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

I had carried out countless experiments, lost who knows how many pens in the process, yet in return I managed to uncover several truths about my ability. None of those failures were meaningless; each one left a trace of understanding within my mind.

I began to grasp how this fire responds to my intent, how even a sliver of hesitation can cause the structure to collapse, and how my will must be absolutely clear if a transformation is to endure. Though my body was exhausted, a different feeling grew inside me—a quiet certainty that I was on the right path.

I then started writing everything I had tested about my Innate Technique into my notebook.

The tip of the pen moved slowly but steadily, as if I were afraid of missing even the smallest detail—something that might seem trivial now, yet could become the key later.

I wrote each line with care, replaying in my mind how the fire emerged, how it reacted, and how it obeyed my will.

[Uses of the Purple Flame: This purple flame is capable of forging, creating, and reconstructing objects with a wide range of functions. It does not merely burn or melt; instead, it works like an invisible hand that reshapes matter itself.]

[I can take an existing object and transform it into another with a different form and purpose, as though the material were nothing more than clay beneath my will. In addition, I can create ordinary objects that possess no Cursed Energy, as well as Cursed Tools that are directly bound to my own Cursed Energy.]

[Differences Between Ordinary Objects, Active-Type Cursed Tools, and Passive-Type Cursed Tools: Transforming a normal object into something else with a different form and function does not consume too much Cursed Energy, as long as I know clearly what I want to create. As long as the concept is firm in my mind, the purple flame will follow that image with little resistance.]

[First, I must know the form of the object I intend to create—not merely a vague impression, but the exact details of its shape, size, and proportions. I have to be able to "see" it as if it already exists before me: its edges, its thickness, even the texture of its surface.]

[Second, I must understand the function of that object: how it works, which parts move, which remain static, and the ultimate purpose of its existence. Without this understanding, the result will be nothing more than a shell that looks correct but does not function.]

[Third, I must maintain continuous concentration to preserve the image of the object within my mind, ensuring that its form and function do not waver during the process. The slightest lapse in focus can make the structure I am building unstable. Perhaps once I become stronger, this third condition will no longer be as necessary, though the first two will remain absolute—like a foundation that cannot be replaced by anything else.]

[To create a Cursed Tool, however, the process is different and far more demanding. First, I must determine the form of the object with a level of precision far greater than that required for ordinary transformation. Every tiny detail affects how Cursed Energy will flow within it.]

[Second, I must define the object's function—not only what it can do, but how it operates at the level of Cursed Energy itself. I need to consider the paths of energy flow, the points of focus, and how that energy will interact with the user's body or the surrounding environment when activated. A small mistake in the design can make the tool unstable, or even dangerous to its wielder.]

[Third, I must expend a greater amount of Cursed Energy by channeling it into the object I am forming, binding that energy to every part as though constructing an invisible framework. This process feels like stitching energy into matter, layer by layer, until the two can no longer be separated.]

[Fourth, I must establish the rules governing the object's function. Every Cursed Tool I create must possess clearly defined operational laws—almost like a fixed mechanism that cannot be ignored, cannot be twisted at will, and will always respond according to the limits I set from the beginning. It is these rules that distinguish a Cursed Tool from an ordinary object; it is not merely an instrument, but a system bound by the laws I have embedded within it.]

[For example, if a Cursed Tool took the form of a ring, I could set a rule that the ring would help my Cursed Energy flow more smoothly and evenly, stabilizing a current that was usually rough and difficult to control. In this way, the energy released would no longer be wild, but organized and more efficient.]

[To activate it, I would have to channel Cursed Energy into the ring, as if filling a vessel waiting for a command. When that energy saturates the internal structure of the ring, its effects manifest in accordance with the rules I have embedded within it.]

[However, this effect has a time limit—for instance, remaining active for one hour and requiring a ten-minute cooldown before it can be used again—so it cannot be employed carelessly and demands careful calculation.]

[In addition, I can also create Cursed Tools with passive functions that operate continuously without the need for activation, like a current that never stops flowing. Passive types are far easier to make and require much less Cursed Energy than active ones.]

[They are indeed much weaker than active types, but their strengths lie in stability and reliability. Even so, every passive tool remains bound by the rules I plant inside it, meaning it can never exceed the limits I set from the very beginning.]

[Properties of the Purple Flame: With this purple fire, I can create objects without requiring any initial materials. However, this method is far more difficult than other processes. It demands extremely high concentration, rapidly drains stamina, and requires a tremendous amount of Cursed Energy, as though my own body becomes a temporary vessel for the act of creation itself.]

[That flame does not merely burn; it disassembles form, erases physical boundaries, and leaves behind the deepest essence of an object. An item consumed by the purple flame and seemingly vanished does not truly cease to exist; it simply loses its coarse shape and is transformed into raw material that I can reshape, stored within my raw-material reserve. Thus, I can create other objects without needing to cast new materials into the fire—merely by utilizing the essence already gathered under my control.]

[Creating complex objects—such as structures that resemble technology or mechanisms with many interlocking parts—requires vastly greater Cursed Energy and a level of concentration that can scarcely be allowed to waver. Every detail must be woven from nearly formless essence, from the basic framework down to the smallest function, as if I were reassembling reality itself from fragments of meaning.]

I then finished all of those notes in the book, closing the final page with a slow, quiet breath.

Looking at what I had written made me smile faintly; it seemed my decision to use this notebook had truly been the right one. Every line felt like a small map guiding me toward a better understanding of my own abilities.

And if one day I became strong enough, burning this notebook might even be possible—letting it return to essence that I could reshape. But for now, there was absolutely no need for that. I still needed this book badly as an anchor for my thoughts.

"Whew… is it already noon?" I murmured softly as I looked up. The sky was brighter now, sunlight slipping through the gaps in the leaves above my head and falling directly onto the notebook, making the ink on the pages glimmer faintly. Time had passed without my noticing.

I had used ten of the eleven pens in my experiments. Of those ten, only two could be called successful: one pen had turned into an ordinary marker, its tip widened and its ink flowing thicker; and another pen had become a Cursed Tool marker with a passive property.

The rest had failed. Some cracked in the middle of the forming process, some deviated from the concept I had designed, and others had their energy collapse before I could embed any rules at all. A few were even completely destroyed, leaving behind remnants that could no longer be used.
