Chapter 15 - Chapter fourteen — Frost and Betrayal

Chapter fourteen — Frost and Betrayal

The wind howled across the icy island, its bitter breath cutting through the darkness like a knife. Monk Joren had arrived, the chill clinging to him as he took his first steps on the hardened ground of the prison. Rumors of Kairo's capture had reached him like an urgent whisper amidst the winds, igniting a fire within him. He had to find Kairo.

His robes, worn and frayed, fluttered like banners in the cold. Eyes sharp as a hawk's, he surveyed the imposing structure before him: the icy prison stood tall, its walls fortified with remnants of ancient magic and despair. The guards patrolled with cruel indifference, but Joren was a master of stealth, and he moved like a shadow through the confusion and chaos surrounding the fortress's entrance.

Inside the prison, Kairo sat shackled alongside fellow prisoners in a small, dim cell. The atmosphere was thick with the stench of sweat and despair. He took in his cellmates, a motley crew of faces worn down by suffering and neglect. They looked like echoes of their former selves, gaunt and resigned to their fates.

"I'm Kairo," he introduced himself, his voice steady despite the bleakness. "What are they holding you for?"

One man, eyes sunken yet glinting with a spark of rebellion, answered hoarsely. "Each of us is a prisoner of our past... and some for simply crossing the wrong path."

Kairo nodded, noting the camaraderie that formed between them in this hellish place. But even companionship couldn't shield them from the icy reality of their imprisonment.

During lunch, the guards paraded through the damp cell block, their laughter ringing hollow and cruel. One particularly brutish guard approached Kairo's cell with malice in his eyes, shoving aside one of the prisoners and holding out a bowl of slop. "You think you're better than them?" he sneered, knocking the bowl out of Kairo's hands, the contents spilling onto the floor.

"Hey!" Kairo protested, but received a swift kick to his side for his insolence. The prison guard's laughter echoed, biting through the grim atmosphere. Kairo clenched his fists, a fire igniting within him—but even that flicker was snuffed out when two other guards joined, dragging him out into the courtyard for a beating.

"For being such a tough guy," one of them mocked, and they took turns landing harsh blows that left Kairo gasping for breath.

Just as they were about to pull him back into the cell, they heard a commotion. Joren had made his entrance unnoticed, the shadows swallowing him like a cloak. He had observed it all and felt the anger spurring within him.

Using a nearby distraction, Joren focused his energy before swiftly and silently striking. He launched himself at one of the guards, his movements fluid and lethal. The guard went down without a sound, and Joren wasted no time in stripping the uniform from the body.

With the guard's clothes on, he approached the remaining guards at the entrance with an air of authority. "What's going on here?" he barked, blending into the chaos seamlessly.

"What do you care?" one of the remaining guards responded, eyes narrowing. "Just some prisoners causing trouble."

"Get back to your post before I report you!" Joren snapped, and the guards complied, abandoning their duties to avoid confrontation. The chaos he had created allowed Kairo a brief window of reprieve.

Kairo was eventually dragged back into the prison halls, and soon he found himself being led to a darker part of the fortress — the execution room.

His heart raced as dread washed over him. Each step closer felt like a final march toward his end, but he couldn't allow fear to control him. He needed to be ready for whatever fate awaited him.

With Joren now undercover, he knew he had to act fast. He would find Kairo and help him escape by any means necessary. The icy walls of the prison were closing in, but hope flickered like a distant star.

Kairo and Joren were connected by an unbreakable bond, and though miles of ice lay between them, both knew the fight for freedom was far from over.
