Chapter 92 - Chapter 92: Recognition.

Nana and Zayne stood on the observation platform, watching through reinforced glass as the android specimens cleared the underground facility.

It was... terrifying.

Twenty humanoid figures moving with perfect coordination. No communication needed. Just synchronized combat efficiency born from shared programming.

They didn't fight like humans. Didn't hesitate. Didn't show fear or pain or anything.

Just killed.

Specimen 05—Darius—tore through a hybrid like it was paper. No expression. No acknowledgment of the violence. Just task completion.

Specimen 11 used a flamethrower with mechanical precision, burning vampires without flinching from the heat or the screaming.

And one android was different.

Specimen 08. Smaller build. Moving between the others with medical equipment. When Specimen 14 lost an arm to a demon bite, Specimen 08 calmly retrieved a replacement from a storage crate and reattached it. Synthetic skin sealing. Electrical connections reestablishing. Done in under three minutes.

Like a field medic. But for robots.

"They're not human," Zayne said quietly. Horror in his voice. "They look human. Move like humans. But they're—"

"Machines," Nana finished. Her hands clenched on the railing. "The government built android soldiers. Programmed them to kill creatures without emotion. Without choice."

She watched Specimen 08 move to the next injured android, repairing damage with the same empty efficiency.

"That one thinks it's a doctor," Zayne observed. "Programmed with medical protocols. But it doesn't understand that humans can't just swap body parts like machinery."

As if to prove his point, a hunter nearby got bitten by a demon. The wound was on his leg—high on the thigh, infection spreading fast.

Specimen 17 moved immediately.

Raised its weapon. Aimed at the hunter's head.

*Mercy kill protocol.*

"NO!" Zayne lunged forward, ice barrier forming between the android and the hunter. "STOP! Don't kill him!"

Specimen 17 paused. Scanned Zayne. "IDENTIFY: INFECTED HUMAN. PROTOCOL REQUIRES ELIMINATION BEFORE TRANSFORMATION."

"You can SAVE him!" Zayne shouted. "Cut the infected area! Amputate the leg! He doesn't have to die!"

Confusion flickered across the android's face—if it could be called a face. More like a processor trying to reconcile conflicting data.

"QUERY: HUMANS REPAIRABLE?"

"YES! Humans are repairable! We heal! We survive amputation!" Zayne gestured frantically at the medical android. "Get Specimen 08 over here! Now!"

Specimen 08 approached. Scanned the hunter. Then looked at its own equipment with what might have been confusion.

It held up a spare robotic arm. Glanced at the hunter's human leg. Back to the arm.

"INCOMPATIBLE COMPONENTS," it said flatly. "HUMAN REPAIR REQUIRES DIFFERENT PROTOCOL."

"Then LEARN!" Zayne grabbed medical supplies from the android's kit. "Watch. I'll show you."

He performed emergency amputation on the hunter while twenty android specimens watched with empty eyes. Learning. Recording. Adding new protocols to their programming.

*This is insane. I'm teaching combat androids how to perform field surgery on humans.*

But if it kept them from killing people unnecessarily...

Nana wasn't watching the surgery.

She'd stopped moving the moment she saw her.

Specimen 03.

Mina.

Her friend. Her sister from Avalon. The person who'd taught her to survive. Who'd protected her. Who'd died so Nana could escape.

Except she hadn't died. She'd been captured. Modified. Turned into this.

Mina stood among the other androids, one arm missing (torn off during earlier combat, not yet replaced), demon-scarred face exactly like Nana remembered, but eyes empty.

She was fighting a vampire with brutal efficiency. No emotion. No recognition. Just programming executing combat protocols.

Nana's heart shattered.

*She's alive. She's here. But she's not—she's not Mina anymore.*

The vampire fell. Dissolved. Mina turned—

And her eyes locked on Nana.

For half a second, nothing happened.

Then Mina raised her weapon. Combat rifle aimed directly at Nana's face. Finger on the trigger.

"IDENTIFY," Mina demanded. Flat. Mechanical. "UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL IN COMBAT ZONE."

Nana swallowed hard. "It's me. Nana. Specimen 21. We—we knew each other. In Avalon. You protected me. Taught me to survive. We were—"

"SCANNING."

Mina's eyes changed. Pupils dilating mechanically as facial recognition software activated. Data processing. Cross-referencing.

"MATCH CONFIRMED: SPECIMEN 21. DESIGNATION: NANA WANG. RANK: ALPHA CLASS. STATUS: ESCAPED SUBJECT."

She lowered her weapon slowly.

"QUERY: WHY DID SPECIMEN 21 ESCAPE? QUERY: ARE YOU DEFECTIVE?"

The words hit like physical blows.

*Defective. She thinks I'm broken because I escaped. Because I have emotions. Because I'm still human.*

"I'm not defective," Nana said, voice shaking. "I'm—I'm free. I chose to leave. Chose to be more than a weapon."

Mina tilted her head. Processing. "INCOMPREHENSIBLE. SPECIMENS EXIST TO ELIMINATE TARGETS. CHOICE NOT REQUIRED."

"Mina—"

"DESIGNATION: SPECIMEN 03. 'MINA' IS DEPRECATED IDENTIFIER."

"No." Nana stepped closer, ignoring Zayne's warning hand on her shoulder. "You're Mina. You taught me how to hide from elimination cycles. Showed me where to find food. Told me stories about—about your family. Your life before Avalon. You were human."

Mina stared at her. Empty. Blank.

"NO MEMORY FILES EXIST FOR SPECIFIED DATA. LIKELY CORRUPTION FROM PREVIOUS TERMINATION CYCLES."

"You're not corrupted—"

"AVALON DEATH COUNT: THREE. MEMORY RESET CONFIRMED AFTER EACH TERMINATION. CURRENT MEMORY SPAN: 47 DAYS."

Forty-seven days. That's all Mina remembered. From being woken in this facility to now.

Everything before—every moment in Avalon, every memory they'd shared, every sacrifice she'd made—gone.

Erased by the government when they turned her into this.

Nana's eyes filled with tears. "You don't remember me at all?"

"NEGATIVE. NO PERSONAL MEMORY FILES EXIST. ONLY COMBAT PROTOCOLS AND MISSION PARAMETERS."

Other androids continued fighting around them. Clearing the facility. Eliminating creatures. But Mina stood still, scanning Nana's face with mechanical precision.

And then—

Something flickered. In her eyes. Just for a second.

"ANOMALY DETECTED," Mina said slowly. "VIEWING SPECIMEN 21 TRIGGERS... UNDEFINED RESPONSE. ERROR IN EMOTIONAL SUPPRESSION PROTOCOLS."

She reached up with her remaining hand, touching her own face where demon scars marked the synthetic skin. "RECOGNITION PATTERN INCOMPLETE. DATA SUGGESTS... PRIOR INTERACTION. BUT FILES CORRUPTED. CANNOT ACCESS—"

She stopped. Processor struggling with something it couldn't compute.

*She's trying to remember. Some part of her—some fragment—is fighting the programming.*

"Mina," Nana whispered. "Please. Try to remember. We were friends. Sisters. You died for me. You—"

"SPECIMEN 03," Mina corrected. But her voice was less flat now. Less certain. "I... cannot remember. But scanning your face produces... unusual feedback. System conflict. Emotional data without source."

She stared at Nana like she was a puzzle. A glitch. An anomaly.

"Why does viewing you create phantom pain response?" Mina asked. "Androids do not feel pain. But sensors detect... something. Where memory files should exist."

*She's feeling the absence. The gap where memories were. Where friendship used to be.*

Nana couldn't help it anymore.

She stepped forward and hugged Mina.

Wrapped her arms around the android that used to be her friend. Around synthetic skin and mechanical components and whatever was left of the person she'd loved.

Mina went rigid. "PHYSICAL CONTACT NOT REQUIRED FOR—"

"I don't care," Nana sobbed against her shoulder. "I don't care if you don't remember. I don't care if you're different now. You're still Mina. You're still my friend. You're still—"

"I am Specimen 03," Mina said quietly. But she didn't pull away. Didn't push Nana back. Just stood there, confused, while her programming tried to process unexpected input.

"QUERY: Why does Specimen 21 express emotional distress?"

"Because I thought you were dead," Nana said brokenly. "Because I've been mourning you for months. Because you were the first person who protected me in Avalon and I never got to thank you for—for everything."

Mina's remaining hand came up slowly. Mechanically. Touched Nana's back with careful pressure.

Not quite a hug. But trying. Attempting to reciprocate even without understanding why.

"OBSERVATION: Specimen 21 exhibits high emotional capacity. This must be the 'defect' mentioned in files. Yet... combat efficiency remains optimal. Contradiction in data."

She paused. "QUERY: Can androids become defective like you? Can we learn to feel?"

The question was so *vulnerable*. So desperately *human* despite coming from a machine.

Nana pulled back to look at Mina's face. At the demon scars. At the empty eyes trying so hard to understand something they weren't programmed for.

"I don't know," she said honestly. "But... you're trying. Right now. You're questioning your programming. That's more human than you think."

"CONCERNING," Mina said. "Questioning protocols may indicate malfunction. Should report for diagnostic—"

"NO!" Nana grabbed her shoulders. "Don't report it. Don't let them erase whatever you're feeling. Please. Just—just stay with me. Stay here. Let me help you remember."

"IMPOSSIBLE. MEMORY FILES ARE DELETED. CANNOT RECOVER CORRUPTED DATA."

"Then we'll make new memories," Nana said fiercely. "We'll start over. I'll tell you everything. Who you were. What you meant to me. And maybe—maybe some part of you will remember. Will feel it even if you can't access the files."

Mina stared at her for a long moment.

Processing. Calculating. Trying to reconcile emotion with logic.

"PROPOSAL ACCEPTED," she said finally. "Will remain with Specimen 21 for observation purposes. To determine if 'defect' is contagious. If feeling is possible for android units."

It wasn't perfect. Wasn't the reunion Nana had dreamed of.

But it was something. A chance. A possibility.

Zayne appeared beside them, finished with the hunter's surgery. He looked at Mina with careful assessment.

"Specimen 03," he said gently. "I'm Dr. Zayne Li. Version 06. Specimen 21's husband."

"ACKNOWLEDGED. FILES INDICATE Version 06 ALSO DEFECTIVE. EMOTIONAL RETENTION CONFIRMED."

"Very defective," Zayne agreed, smiling slightly. "We're both disasters. But we're alive. And we're fighting to stay human despite the modifications."

He extended his hand. "It's nice to meet you, Mina. Nana's told me a lot about you."

Mina looked at his hand. Scanned it. Then slowly extended her own remaining hand to shake.

"MIMICKING HUMAN GREETING PROTOCOL," she said. "Purpose unclear. But... acceptable."

They stood together in the observation deck while androids cleared the facility below. While the crisis continued. While the world kept trying to end.

But for this moment—this impossible, broken, *hopeful* moment—Nana had her friend back.

Not the way she remembered. Not fully human. Not Mina yet.

But trying. Learning. Feeling something even through the programming.

And that was enough.

Day 91.

Reunion achieved.

Heartbroken but together.

Building new memories from deleted files.

Whatever it takes.
