+++++
The mountain shook. It wasn't a metaphor. The land beneath the Hida range groaned in protest as two forces of nature collided in the center of the village.
BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.
The shockwaves were rhythmic, a drumbeat of destruction that flattened trees and shattered windows for miles.
In the center of the dust cloud was the Water Titan — a nine-foot avatar of pressurized liquid — clashed against a mountain of red meat. Sasha Izumi was no longer fighting with technique. She was fighting with the raw, hysterical strength of a woman who had just watched her husband die.
Muscular laughed. Enjoying every bit of it.
"YES!" he roared, catching a fist made of water that could have crushed a tank. "THAT'S WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT! SHOW ME ALL YOU GOT!"
Sasha didn't speak. She twisted her torso, the water swirling violently. She disengaged, sliding back on a jet of water, and then snapped her arm forward.
"RIPTIDE!"
A blade of rotating, high-pressure water — thin as a wire and sharp as a laser — shot out, aiming directly for Muscular's neck.
Muscular's single eye widened. He didn't have time to dodge fully. He twisted his body at the last microsecond.
SQUELCH.
The water blade sliced through layers of muscle fiber like a hot knife through butter. It cut deep into his shoulder armor, severing bundles of reinforced tissue. Blood sprayed, mixing with the water on the ground.
"CLOSE!" Muscular yelled, grinning through the pain.
He ignored the wound. He lunged forward, closing the distance before Sasha could retract the water.
His right arm — the one he had been building up, layer upon layer — shot out. It tore through the outer shell of Sasha's water armor like a cannonball hitting glass.
CRACK.
The fist connected with Sasha's physical shoulder inside the armor.
Sasha flew. She was launched backward like a ragdoll, crashing through three traditional houses. Wood splintered, tatami mats disintegrated, and stone chimneys collapsed. She finally came to a stop in the ruins of the village bakery, buried under a pile of debris.
Dust settled over the silence.
"Sasha!"
A flash of green light appeared beside her. Honoka appeared beside the rubble, sliding to her knees. Her eyes were wide, panicked.
She frantically pulled beams and rocks away. She found Sasha lying in a crater of flour and broken glass.
The water armor was gone. Sasha's left arm — the one that took the hit — was... gone. It had been pulverized, the bone shattered, the flesh torn away. Blood was pumping out of the stump at an alarming rate, staining the white flour red.
"Oh god," Honoka gasped.
She didn't hesitate. She couldn't heal this. Regeneration took time and energy they didn't have.
She reached into her pocket and pulled out a silver lighter.
"Sasha," Honoka said, her voice shaking but her hands steady. "This is going to hurt. I'm sorry."
Sasha opened her eyes. They were hazy, unfocused. "Do... it."
Honoka flicked the lighter. She activated her quirk, not to heal, but to burn. She fed the small flame with her own energy, turning it into a concentrated blowtorch of green fire.
She pressed it against the stump.
SSSSZZZT.
"UGGGGGGGGG!!!"
Sasha screamed. The smell of burning flesh filled the small space, overpowering the scent of bread.
The bleeding stopped. The wound was cauterized, sealed by a brutal, ugly scar.
Honoka slumped back, panting. The energy cost of instant cauterization was massive.
"We have to move," Honoka whispered, grabbing Sasha's good arm. "He knows the layout. He's fast. If we stay here, he finds us. If he finds us, he finds the villagers."
Sasha took a deep, rattling breath. She forced herself to sit up. Her face was pale, drained of blood, but her eyes were burning with a cold, dead light.
"How long?" she rasped. "How long can your boost last?"
Honoka checked her internal reserves. She was running on fumes. "Two minutes max. If I push it any further, my heart gives out."
Sasha nodded. She grabbed a piece of jagged metal from the debris with her remaining hand, using it to pull herself to her feet.
"Use the opening," Sasha said. She looked at Honoka. "I will create an opening. You strike him through his eye. It's the only place he didn't cover. It has to be his weak point."
"Sasha," Honoka warned, "you need to retreat. You have one arm. You're bleeding out internally."
"No," Sasha growled. She looked at the blood on the ground. Shino's blood was out there somewhere, too. "I ain't leaving until this fucker is dead."
Honoka looked at her friend. She saw the decision in her eyes. It wasn't bravery. It was a suicide pact.
Honoka nodded slowly. She pulled her combat knife from her belt, gripping it until her knuckles turned white.
"We fight," she said. "Till the end."
***
Muscular landed in the center of the street, crushing a stone lantern under his boot. He looked around, his muscle fibers twitching with anticipation.
"Where are you rabbits hiding?" he called out, his voice echoing. "Come out, come out! I promise I'll make it quick! Or slow! Depends on how much you struggle!"
Now.
From the shadows of an alleyway, a blade of water materialized. It was silent, deadly, aiming for the back of his neck.
But Muscular didn't even turn around.
At the last millisecond, a bundle of muscle fibers shot out from his neck, catching the water blade. It sliced through the fibers, but lost its momentum inches from his spine.
"Found you."
He spun around, grinning like a maniac.
Sasha stood there, alone in the street. She was swaying slightly, her skin pale, but the water around her was vibrating with intensity.
He punched.
Sasha dodged, weaving under the blow. She retaliated with a water whip that slashed across his chest.
They danced. A dance of death in the ruins of a vacation paradise. Muscular was overwhelming, a juggernaut of power. Sasha was fading, her movements slowing, the water losing its pressure.
Honoka watched from the shadows, her heart hammering against her ribs. She was channeling every ounce of her stamina into Sasha remotely, feeling her own life force drain away like water down a drain.
One minute left, she thought. Fifty seconds.
Sasha felt it too. The weariness. The cold was creeping into her limbs. The boost was on its last leg.
It's now or never, Sasha yelled in her mind.
She screamed, channeling everything. She punched Muscular in the chest with a blast of water that sent him skidding back ten feet.
She didn't follow up. Instead, she shot up.
She propelled herself directly above him, high into the air.
She raised her remaining hand to the sky.
Every drop of water remaining in the village — the puddles, the broken pipes, the moisture in the clouds — rushed to her. It formed a massive, swirling sphere above her head, condensing until it was black with pressure.
She left herself defenseless. She stripped away her water armor to feed the attack.
"CANNON TYPE: POSEIDON!!!!!!!!!!"
She launched herself downward with the shot.
A tsunami of high-pressure water, compressed into a single column, crashed down on Muscular. It was enough force to crack a tectonic plate.
Muscular looked up. He didn't dodge.
"BRING IT ON!" he roared.
The wave hit.
The impact cratered the street, sending a shockwave of water and debris outward that leveled the remaining buildings. For a moment, both of them were wrapped in a chaotic, churning sphere of water.
Sasha moved rapidly through the liquid, aiming for the kill.
But Muscular... Muscular was a monster.
His muscle armor was shredded. His skin was flayed. But he was still standing. He found her in the chaos.
He gathered every remaining fiber in his body into his right arm.
He punched. Aiming for her chest.
Sasha saw it coming. She could have dodged. She could have used the water to deflect.
But if she dodged, she lost the angle. She lost the opening.
For Shino, she thought.
She didn't dodge.
She gathered the remaining water into her hand, forming one last, desperate Riptide blade.
SHUNK.
Muscular's hand tore through her torso. It was a wet, sickening sound. His fist exited her back, destroying her spine and lungs instantly.
Sasha gasped, blood pouring from her mouth.
But she didn't stop. She used the momentum of his punch to slide down his arm, pulling herself closer to him.
She aimed for his head.
Muscular laughed. "Too slow!"
At the last moment, he twitched his shoulder. The blade missed his neck. It carved a deep gash into his shoulder instead, severing his shoulder muscles.
"UGHHHHHH!"
He yelled in pain, thrashing.
And then, silence.
The water collapsed, splashing onto the muddy ground.
Muscular stood there, panting, Sasha's body impaled on his arm.
"Well," he wheezed, grinning through the blood. "That was... entertaining."
He tried to pull his arm out.
He couldn't.
Sasha, even in death, had locked her muscles. Her remaining hand was clamped onto his bicep with a grip of steel. She smiled, her teeth red.
Not happening.
Muscular's eye widened. Realization hit him.
"WHERE IS THAT DOCTOR?!" he screamed, trying to shake the body off.
Flash.
Honoka landed.
She dropped from the roof above, silent as a ghost. She landed on Muscular's shoulders, her legs locking around his neck.
She didn't use a quirk; she could not. She used gravity and rage.
She drove the combat knife down.
SQUELCH.
The blade buried itself to the hilt in his already injured eye socket.
"ARGHHHHHHHHH!"
Muscular screamed, a sound of pure agony. He stumbled back, thrashing blindly.
"DIE!" Honoka screamed, twisting the knife. "DIE! DIE! DIE!"
She pushed deeper, trying to reach the brain. Trying to end the nightmare.
Muscular roared. With one final, desperate burst of adrenaline, he activated his quirk.
Muscle fibers exploded from his skin like shrapnel.
The force tore Sasha's body in half. Her legs fell to the ground. Her upper torso remained stuck on his arm, gut spilling out into the mud.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Honoka shrieked, watching her friend be desecrated.
She pushed the knife harder, desperate, sobbing.
But it stuck. It hit bone. The skull was too thick.
Muscular reached up. He grabbed Honoka by the hair.
He ripped her off his shoulders and threw her.
She flew through the air, crashing into the side of a stone building.
CRACK.
Her left leg snapped. Her arm twisted. She slid down the wall, leaving a streak of blood, and landed as a heap of broken limbs.
She tried to get up. She couldn't.
She looked at Sasha's remains. Tears blurred her vision.
"Sorry," she whispered, coughing blood. "Sorry... I couldn't finish it."
Muscular walked toward her. Blood poured from his ruined socket, but his remaining eye locked onto her, burning with cold rage. He stepped over Sasha's corpse without a second thought.
He wasn't laughing anymore. He was breathing heavily, a rattling sound in his chest.
"This has gone on for long enough," he grunted. "Time to end this. Thanks for the amazing time, Doctor."
He raised his remaining arm. The muscle fibers coiled, preparing to crush her skull.
Honoka closed her eyes.
She thought of the beach. She thought of the grave. She thought of the boy with red hair running into the trees.
"Sorry, baby," she whispered to the darkness. "Forgive Mommy for leaving you."
The fist began to descend.
WOOOOSH
A blue glint shone from the right.
It wasn't a light. It was a projectile.
A bullet of compressed blue and golden flame slammed into Muscular's face, hitting him right on the nose with the force of a wrecking ball.
The villain's head snapped back. He stumbled, losing his balance.
"GET AWAY FROM MY MOTHER, YOU FREAK!"
The scream didn't come from a hero. It came from a boy who had broken his promise to run away.
